South Africa vs Australia Highlights And Cricket Score 3rd Match - ODI Commentary
Okay then. 321 to win. Game over for the Aussies? They looked pretty deflated in the last 10 overs, which yielded 130 runs. May not be a bad idea to just come out and swing. You never know, might be game on. The run chase resumes at 6.05 pm local (0705 GMT).
Mitchell Starc says that 321 can be chased down. Reckons that 50 overs is a long time and you don't want to swing from the word go. Feels that Australia have a good batting line-up. Admits tat the Aussies were on top with the Saffas at 55/3 but admires the way Faf and Miller batted, taking their time initially but then cashing in later. Advises his batsmen to take a leaf out of their books.
The Aussies will be devastated but they will have themselves to blame. The bowlers had nicely set it up in the first half but then some easy chances were put down which led to a carnage. Maxwell had nearly got both the batsmen out - first Faf and then Miller - but while the latter got a reprieve via DRS, the skipper was put down by Carey. In spite of all the battering, the top 3 seamers still ended with respectable figures, which shows how good they were early on. Here's one of them with Neroli Meadows.
It was a stand worth 252 in 199 balls, which had 25 fours and 6 maximums. Australia had no respite and towards the end, it seemed like they were just going through the motions, waiting for the innings to end. The skipper made 125 while Miller went ahead to get to his highest ODI score of 139.
It was an innings split into two halves. First was all Australia, reducing the Proteas to 55/3 in the 16th over, but then Faf du Plessis and David Miller produced an outstanding display of batting. They took their time to settle and then unleashed on every bowler, sparing no one.
Crash. Bang. Hammer. Clobber. Crack. Running short of adjectives. It was always a matter of getting a wicket, felt the Aussies. But 2 men have literally snatched the game away from them.
Josh Hazlewood to Dwaine Pretorius. Full and outside off, slapped through the covers for a run. Just 7 from the final over, which applies a kind of soothing balm on the Aussie wounds. South Africa finish on 320/5!
Josh Hazlewood to Heinrich Klaasen. A slower ball, Klaasen tries to swing hard but misses. The batsmen take a bye as Carey misses his under-arm shy at the striker's end.
Dwaine Pretorius comes in.
Josh Hazlewood to David Miller. OUT! Miller cannot quite stay till the end. A high full toss, David swings this over mid-wicket. It seems like it is another six but Aaron Finch near the ropes composes himself, takes the catch, then realizes that he is going over, throws the ball in the air and then comes back to take it cleanly. Excellent is an understatement for Miller's knock. Just imagine - he did not want to review that LBW off Maxwell but Faf... well played.
Josh Hazlewood to David Miller. A dot ball. Wow. A rarity. Outside off, good change in pace, Miller swings but misses.
Josh Hazlewood to David Miller. FOUR! Down the leg side, Miller flicks it beautifully through square leg and finds the boundary!
Josh Hazlewood to Heinrich Klaasen. Full on middle, pushed towards long on for a single.
Josh Hazlewood to bowl the final over. Can SA get to 330?
Marcus Stoinis to David Miller. Dropped short, pulled to deep mid-wicket where Travis Head fumbles, does not know where the ball is because it lobs off his body in the air. Finally recovers and the batsmen take the second. 17 from this over with a wicket, 82/1 in the last 5.
Marcus Stoinis to David Miller. FOUR! Meanwhile, the carnage continues at the other end. A short ball, Miller pulls it behind square leg and gets a boundary!
Heinrich Klaasen is the new man in.
Marcus Stoinis to Faf du Plessis. OUT! Stop the press. A wicket has fallen at the Adelaide Oval. Faf du Plessis walks off to a standing ovation. Short and outside off, Faf reaches out and slashes it towards cover. Does not get enough power and Shaun Marsh gets a catching opportunity. He charges in, dives and takes a splendid catch. Something to smile for the Aussies. Take a bow, Faf.
Marcus Stoinis to Faf du Plessis. SIX! Unbelievable shot. This one reminds me of the innings Faf played at the Wankhede around 2015, wherein he literally smashed India on one leg. That time, he had played a similar shot, reaching out to a wide ball with one hand off his bat and still get it over cover for six. This is no different, only this time Faf is fitter.
Marcus Stoinis to David Miller. A full toss, around leg, swinging in, Miller looks to swing but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. A quick single taken.
Marcus Stoinis to David Miller. FOUR! Change in pace, slower delivery, Miller comes down the track and looks to ramp it over short third man but skews it. The ball lands safely but then backward point and sweeper cover mess it up, parrying the ball into the ropes.
Right then. Over number 49. Who will bowl? Does it matter? For the records, it is Marcus Stoinis...

Pat Cummins to David Miller. FOUR! Not a bad ball but even that disappears! Full and wide outside off, because Miller is backing away to the leg side. But the southpaw reaches out to hit and slashes it through cover! 20 from the over, 45 off the last 3!
Pat Cummins to David Miller. FOUR! Overcompensates for the previous ball, does Cummins and Miller promptly pounces. Pulls it behind square leg and gets a boundary!
Pat Cummins to David Miller. SIX! CLOBBERED! The Killer Miller is on show here. Full and on middle, David swings it cleanly over mid-wicket!

Pat Cummins to David Miller. Down the leg side, Miller tickles this through square leg for a single.
Pat Cummins to David Miller. FOUR! And now a hundred for Miller! His 5th in ODIs, second against the Aussies. Short ball outside off, Miller backs away and ramps it over short third man for a boundary! He is very happy, takes his helmet off, runs around a bit and then celebrates. Well played. Now, for some carnage. MORE carnage.
Mitchell Starc to Faf du Plessis. FOUR! BRUTAL! What sport is Faf playing? Cricket or baseball? A short ball, outside off, du Plessis backs away and clubs it with a flat horizontal bat down the ground, one bounce and into the sight screen! 11 from the over, 25 off the last 2!

Mitchell Starc to David Miller. WIDE. Another one in this over for Mitchell Starc and the Aussies are looking totally ragged now.
Mitchell Starc to Faf du Plessis. 10TH ODI TON FOR FAF DU PLESSIS! 4th against Australia. Led from the front. What a time to do it. Pressure game, series on the line. That is a captain's knock. A short ball, around off, du Plessis pulls this through mid-wicket and gets the single. Takes his helmet off and then raises his arms. Well played, sir.
Mitchell Starc to David Miller. Fuller on middle, chipped down to long on for a single.

Pat Cummins to Faf du Plessis. FOUR! Another boundary! 14 from the over! A length ball outside off, Faf crashes it through the covers and makes it a memorable over for the Saffas.

Pat Cummins to David Miller. A short ball now, pulled through mid-wicket for a run.
Pat Cummins to David Miller. FOUR! Easy-peasy. Fine leg is up and the length is short of full. Christmas comes early. Flicked past short fine leg for a boundary.
Pat Cummins to Faf du Plessis. Played through mid-wicket by the batsman. They pick up a single.
Pat Cummins to Faf du Plessis. NOT OUT. Totally desperate review from Finch who looked clueless. No one heard a sound except Carey and Cummins and he went with his duo. A length ball outside off, Faf got across and looked to paddle but missed. Carey was the first to appeal, while Cummins seemed extremely confident that there was a nick. Finch went upstairs but no technology could make Aleem Dar change his decision. Shane Warne chuckles on air feeling that perhaps that was a tactical review from Finch, trying to slow down proceedings.
Has Cummins struck on return? The on-field decision is not out against a caught behind appeal. Cummins reckons that he has Faf caught behind. Review time...
Pat Cummins is back too. 8-2-33-0 so far.

Mitchell Starc to Faf du Plessis. HIGH FULL TOSS! WAS THAT A NO BALL? No, says the square leg umpire to the no ball inquiry from Faf. Replays show that it was a high full toss, yes, but was dipping down. At the point of contact, it was below the waist when Faf managed to get it through the covers for a single.
Mitchell Starc to Faf du Plessis. EDGED, BUT DOES NOT CARRY! A slower ball from Starc, du Plessis comes down the track and looks to pull but gets an under edge. However, it does not carry to Carey.
Mitchell Starc to Faf du Plessis. A short ball, Faf looks to pull but misses and is struck on the chest. Starc is almost near the head of Faf, giving him some 'words of advice'.

Pat Cummins is back on. 7-2-24-0 so far.

Josh Hazlewood to Faf du Plessis. Dances out again and hits it through the covers for a couple.
Josh Hazlewood to Faf du Plessis. SIX! Don't look away. Cavalry has arrived and they are looking to fight. A short ball, around off, Faf jumps out and pulls it over mid-wicket. Okay then. Finch is forced to bring Zampa back on. 5-0-23-0 so far. Faf was very vocal in his post-match interview of the last game that Australia were lucky that their spinner did not have settled batsmen in the middle to attack him. He will be looking to put those words into action here...

DRINKS BREAK. Pat Cummins, on the overturned LBW verdict says that he did not think height will be an issue on this surface and says that it was very close. On the wicket, he feels that it looks a good one and anything around 250 would be a good score. Admits that the track looks pretty flat although the seamers did well to exploit the moisture on the surface. Reckons that the Proteas have some big hitters down the order so Australia need to be careful.

Aleem Dar did not delay raising his finger and Miller was walking back dejectedly. Skipper Faf du Plessis comes in at number 4, replacing Hendricks.
Marcus Stoinis to Reeza Hendricks. OUT! Would you believe it? It is Stoinis who gives the breakthrough! On his very second ball! One of the worst balls to get out to. It is a nothing delivery, pitched on a length and down the leg side. Hendricks gets across, looks to tuck it fine but is not quite able to do that cleanly. The ball does hit the face of the bat but goes straight to Alex Carey who does not have to move much to his left. He catches, appeals, Stoinis does not even bother to. Because his face resembles that of a person who can do nothing wrong. The umpire raises his finger and off goes Reeza.

Josh Hazlewood to Aiden Markram. SIX! BANG! How still was his head when he played that shot? Very still. A rare bad ball from the dependable Josh, it is a long hop, right in the middle of the pitch and Markram is ready for the gift. Rocks back in a flash and pulls it over mid-wicket!

Josh Hazlewood to Aiden Markram. Full and outside off, driven sweetly towards mid off.
Josh Hazlewood to Aiden Markram. Around off, solidly defended.
Josh Hazlewood to Aiden Markram. RUN OUT OPPORTUNITY MISSED BY AUSTRALIA. They have done well to keep the pressure on and it nearly resulted in the second wicket. A length ball, around middle, Markram flicks it towards short mid-wicket and sets off for a single. But Hendricks does not agree and rightly so. The ball is not far from Pat Cummins who just has to move a bit to his right. He slides to his right and now Aiden starts to go back. He is so far down the track that even an under-arm throw from Cummins would have found him short. Pat tries to flick it back but it misses the stumps. Hang on. There is more. Glenn Maxwell comes charging in from backward point and looks to flick the throw from Cummins onto the stumps. But gets hit on the shin instead.

Josh Hazlewood to Reeza Hendricks. FOUR! First boundary of the game! Textbook stuff from Hendricks. Hazlewood gets the length wrong, bowls it around good length outside off and Reeza just punches it through the covers. Once the ball makes contact with the turf, it just races away. A run after 11 dots.
Josh Hazlewood to Reeza Hendricks. Excellent fielding by Maxwell! He is a livewire anywhere on the field. Full and outside off, RH drives this through point but Maxi dives to his left and makes a terrific one-handed stop.

Josh Hazlewood to Reeza Hendricks. ALMOST A CATCH! Lucky me. Hazlewood is probing here. A length ball, around off, Hendricks looks to flick but just closes the bat-face a bit early. Almost spoons a catch to short mid-wicket. Does not carry to Pat Cummins.

We are in readiness for the game to begin then. Out come the players. Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks will open the batting for South Africa. Mitchell Starc to start off with the first new ball, to Quinton de Kock.
TEAM NEWS - Not surprisingly, Australia are unchanged. The Proteas might have pondered about bringing in Andile Phehlukwayo for Dwaine Pretorius, to strengthen their batting but it is pretty hard to leave out a bloke who took 3 wickets in his first outing in Australia. Hence, they are also unchanged.
TOSS - Aaron Finch has won the spin of the coin and has decided that AUSTRALIA WILL CHASE tonight.
WEATHER - Plenty of clouds in the sky but none of them are rain-threatening. There is plenty of blue around and it looks a pretty good day to play cricket.
Okay! We have a series decider! When was the last time we had this with Australia involved? The last win was not necessarily the best performance from the Aussies but a win is a win nevertheless. That would have given them a big boost ahead of this third and final ODI. South Africa, on the other hand, will believe that they lost the game due to their own mistakes and will look to demonstrate a complete performance tonight. Hello and a warm welcome to the third ODI between Australia and South Africa at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.
That ends the coverage of the third and final ODI. Australia continue to hunt for momentum and series wins. Their next assignment will be a one-off T20I against the Proteas at a new venue, the Carrara Oval, in Queensland, on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 6.20 pm local (0820 GMT). Till then, you can check out some of the action from other areas of the cricketing world. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis, says he feels good tonight. He feels they played their best game here, They were good with the bat today but they were even better with the ball at the death. Further adds Australia also have a very good bowling line-up but their batters executed their plans well. Mentions short bowling was their plan as the leg side boundary was the bigger one and the bowlers responded well. States they wanted to bat first as they wanted to test themselves under challenging conditions. Ends by saying Hobart is one ground where they have a lot of good memories.
Australia skipper, Aaron Finch, says it is always hard to contain two set batters towards the end. Reckons they did get themselves back into the game but could not finish it. Feels they were in a good position after the 35th over mark. Admits they misexecuted their plans a little and credits the way Faf and Miller played. Appreciates the partnership of Marsh and Stoinis. Ends by saying they were not great in the Powerplay in this series and not even in the middle overs, those are issues they need to resolved.
Man of the Match and Player of the Series, David Miller says, it is always a great feeling to contribute in a team's win. Mentions he wanted to take his time out as the team was in trouble. Further adds Faf and he wanted to play long. Says that he is really enjoying his batting at the moment. Reckons the wicket was a little two-paced but it was till a good one. States anything over 300 is a good total but Marsh and Stoinis' partnership did give them a scare. Ends by crediting their bowlers.
Time now for the presentation. Who will be the Man Of The Match? There will be a Man Of The Series too. Stay tuned....
Rabada says it is never easy coming to Australia but they did well to carry forward the momentum after the series win in Sri Lanka. Reckons du Plessis and Miller kept on going and that turned out to be the difference. Mentions the wicket at first felt it was a little two-paced but once the batters got in, it was good for stroke-making. Credits the way the South African bowlers bowled. Ends by saying they deserved the victory.
When you have a score of 320 to defend, normally the bowlers have a good cushion. But nothing to take away from the Saffas. They bowled really well even on a pitch which did not have much of an assistance. It was a good learning curve for the young guys. Dale Steyn set the tone early and ended up with 3 wickets while Rabada picked up 3 as well, towards the end. Here is KG, for a chat with Brendon Julian.
Shaun Marsh says it was disappointing to not be there till the end. Admits South Africa outplayed them. On being asked whether he was batting with a niggle, he says he was completely fine.
Spare a though for Shaun Marsh. His third ODI century in 2018 - all resulting in losses. He looked fluent right from the word go and had Stoinis stayed there for another 5 overs, Australia might have even pulled it off. Here he is, with Neroli Meadows.
The batting actually did decently. After losing 3 down pretty quickly, one might have expected a collapse but Marsh and Stoinis showed that they were up for a fight, with a 107-run stand. After that too, the batsmen coming in tried and staged a few stands but in the end, it was too much to do.
In these last few months, batting has been an issue for the Aussies but here, it was the bowling which let them down. They started really well but a Miller and Faf masterclass was too much to bear, even for the experienced trio of Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood.
Finally the game ends. After South Africa piled on 320, it was always going to be difficult for Australia and after being 39/3, there was hardly any chance left. Yet another series loss for Australia - their 5th bilateral one in a row and they have not won an ODI series since beating Pakistan at home in 2016-17.
