The surface surely is lively and it's assisting the seamers. Pakistan's batting struggled but they have the required firepower in their bowling to do the needful. Mohammad Abbas will be dearly missed on this track but still the likes of Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi can prove to be a handful. The hosts have of late struggled with the bat and it's going to be a stern test for them too. TEA has been taken and we look forward to your company after a short while.

For Pakistan, it was a really bad outing with the bat. Their top order had a good outing in the warmup game but failed to carry the same form here. Apart from Azhar Ali and Babar Azam, everyone struggled to come to terms with South Africa's nagging and accurate bowling. A special mention for Babar Azam, who showed his class while batting with the tail and dominated the Protea bowling for some time. His knock of 71 was full of grit and character and Pakistan must be thanking him for taking their total past the 150-run mark.

Pakistan were struck early after taking a brave call to bat on a green surface. The world expected the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Dale Steyn to do the damage but Duanne Olivier emerged to be the surprise package. He showed a lot of promise in the recently concluded T20 League in South Africa and just transformed his good form into this match. The young man put on a good display of pace bowling and ran amok by making a mockery of the Pakistani batting. Another highlight was of Dale Steyn becoming the leading wicket-taker for South Africa in Tests but his achievement got a bit overshadowed first by Olivier and then by some scintillating batting against him by Babar Azam.

A superlative effort by South Africa to bundle out Pakistan to a dismal first innings total. It could have been even less had the lower half not added vital runs along with Babar Azam. Duanne Olivier is the real star of this innings as he bagged a six-fer and is leading his team off the park. A moment to cherish for the youngster.

Short delivery angling away from Shaheen who just sticks back and tries to withdraw his bat at the last moment. But it flies off something to the keeper who collects and appeals. The finger has gone up and Afridi takes the DRS. Ultra Edge puts everything to rest and Pakistan are bowled out for 181!

The focus might have been on Steyn and Rabada but Olivier has shown that he is not a bad bowler at all. He has taken both the wickets to fall after the openers and has shown tremendous fire in his belly. The pitch still seems to have some grass on it and the second session should be fun as well. Azhar Ali - 31 from 59 balls - on a pitch which is spitting fire and have dragons making use of that fire. First Rabada. Then Steyn. Then Olivier. He has seen it all and is playing a true gem of an innings. All he needs is some support from the other end.

Pakistan elected to bat but started this Test on the wrong foot. Imam-ul-Haq was given the marching orders as early as the second over and then Zaman did not last long. We witnessed a brief fightback from Masood and Azhar but some misfortune saw the former get out. Shafiq too, did not last long but after that, the visitors have managed to hold some forte.

TEAM NEWS - Expected playing XIs for the Proteas. Their pace attack comprises of Steyn, Rabada and Olivier while Maharaj will handle the spin duties. Fifth bowler job could be combined by Bavuma, de Bruyn and Markram. Do not forget Elgar. Pakistan, on the other hand, have made a surprise pick in Shan Masood, ahead of Haris Sohail. Thought his left-arm spin would have been useful here. Like the Proteas, they too, have a 3-man pace attack in Amir, Afridi and Hasan. Yasir Shah will handle the spin duties but it will be interesting to see whom does Sarfraz turn to, should he require a fifth bowler. Azhar Ali? Fakhar Zaman?

TOSS - Sarfraz has at least begun the calling well. He has won the toss and PAKISTAN HAVE OPTED TO BAT FIRST. Surprising? Considering the grass on the pitch, wouldn't it have been better if they had opted to bowl? Perhaps, the track slowing down with the game progressing would have been on his mind. Also, the fickle weather might be a concern too. Might as well make the most of the sunny conditions with the bat rather than keep going in and out when the rain interrupts.

Boxing Day is still on in some parts of the world. It is afternoon in some places. Close to bed time in some. But as far as the place we are concerned, it is just past breakfast time. Pakistan get set to kickstart their away series as they embark on an African safari. The Proteas, on the other hand, are all set to begin their home campaign. As is the fashion these days, we start with red-ball cricket first. Hello and a warm welcome to the opening Test between South Africa and Pakistan in Centurion.

Pakistan will be a shade disappointed with their bowling in the morning session. They conceded too many easy runs, mainly due to Hasan Ali's wayward bowling, and will be feeling the heat now. It's a demanding surface with a lot of assistance for the pace bowlers and the tourists will have to bat much better than their first essay. For South Africa, their batting too struggled against the likes of Amir and Afridi (both claiming a 4-fer) but their lower middle order stood up. LUNCH has been taken now, so do join us in a short while for Pakistan's reply.

Two hours of entertaining cricket comes to a close with South Africa managing to sneak ahead in this Test match by 42 runs. They added 96 runs this morning at the cost of five wickets but that has taken them ahead of Pakistan. Temba Bavuma completed his half century before getting out and then Quinton de Kock took things under his control. He added handy runs with Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada to stretch the Protea lead further.

But it's another slower one by Amir, bowled at 116 kph, and it catches the leading part of Quinton's bat. It goes straight into the hands of Fakhar Zaman at covers who accepts it with both hands. Duanne Olivier says that he is really happy with the performance and is really delighted with his first fifer. Adds that he just wanted to contribute to the team and was focusing on that. On his transformation from T20 cricket to Tests, Olivier mentions that it's just the mindset to be doing the same for a longer time. Also says that he doesn't think too far ahead and was very happy to get the call for this Test match. On his bowling plans, Duanne smiles and says that he backs his bouncers and admits that he wasn't good at the start and counts his first wicket as lucky. States that when he bowls bouncers he makes sure they are on target and it applies equally to the fuller ones. Tells that they had plans for certain batsmen and he just stuck to his strengths. On 75 percent of his balls being on the shorter side, he replies that's his strength and he is really happy with the bowling effort of his team to bowl out the opposition on Day 1. States that 15 wickets in a day and this Test match has moved forward quite quickly and feels that any lead will be crucial. Suggests that there is some extra bounce and there is heat factor as well which came into play later on.

Earlier in the day, after Dale Steyn toppled Shaun Pollock as the leading wicket-taker for South Africa in Tests, the focus shifted to Duanne Olivier. The right-arm seamer focused only on landing the ball in the right areas and let the pitch do the rest. He ended up with 6 wickets, at an average of 6.17 and a strike rate of 14. Pakistan were at their bowling best on a green track. Amir and Afridi were excellent but Hasan Ali could not quite sustain the pressure. His erratic bowling has allowed the Proteas to get away, else the score would have been well beneath a 100. Yasir Shah was tonked around but he can be a handful against the lower order batsmen come Day 2 and the final innings.

It was Babar Azam for Pakistan, it is Temba Bavuma for the hosts. But the home side still has de Kock to come and should back themselves to get some sort of a decent lead. They will aim to get to around 250 and take a lead of about 50-60.

Okay. Stumps, Day 1. That million dollar question now has changed to - 'Has Sarfraz indeed played a masterstroke at the toss?' One would have expected the Saffas to dig in, score big runs but the juice on this wicket is simply not going away. Pakistan extracted more or less the same amount of movement but not that kind of bounce. But they have the Proteas in some trouble with half the side back in the hut.

The day started with the million dollar question - 'Why did Pakistan choose to bat?' On a green track where most teams would have elected to bowl, Sarfraz thought otherwise and saw his side stutter to 181 - that too, thanks to 2 partnerships - 37 and 67 - else they would not have made even that much. Babar Azam and Azhar Ali kept their side afloat on a track which had plenty to offer.

That ends a fantastic day's play. If we were to say that, it would be a massive understatement. South Africa were menacing but Pakistan have given it back. 15 wickets in the day, at an average of just over 20. Wow. This is cricket.

... DAY 3, FIRST SESSION ...

So 149 to win and luckily for South Africa, they have got a full night to rest, think and plan about how to go about this run chase. On paper, anything under 150 should not be that difficult. But South Africa being South Africa and Pakistan being Pakistan, anything can happen. Either way, barring any weather interruptions, this game should see a finish by Tea time on Friday. Earlier in the day, the Protea middle and lower middle order rallied along to gain a very handy 42-run lead. Just imagine, this could so easily have been Pakistan 200 ahead. But that is what tail wagging can do.

Faf du Plessis eventually threw the ball to Kagiso Rabada in the 43rd over and things started to change. He steamed in and what happened next, Pakistan could not believe. Kagiso just ran through the middle order and his spell of 5-2-13-3 just destroyed them. Those 3 wickets came in the space of 13 balls. Olivier then cleaned up the tail, claiming his match figures of 29-6-96-11, THE SECOND BEST by a Protea bowler against Pakistan.

At a time when nothing was happening, this 23-year old stepped up. He is a good watcher from the sidelines. When Dale Steyn was bowling a fiery spell getting the ball to reverse, Kagiso Rabada was just observing and licking his lips. He was just waiting for the opportunity when Faf du Plessis would throw the ball to him. He saw Asad Shafiq getting dismissed by Steyn and felt that he needs to get that ball. And then, that moment came.

Pakistan have always been complaining that they do not get a good start at the top of the order. This time they got one. Zaman and Imam added 44 for the first wicket which was followed by another 57 for the second. Then after a bit of a stutter, the visitors were in good shape at 134/3. But then, reverse swing reversed their fortunes.

Have Pakistan let go of an opportunity? Yes. But have they got a total which can cause some doubts in the South African camp? Yes again. If the Pakistan bowlers land it in the right areas, this target could prove more than a handful. But, to lose your way from 101/1 is not acceptable.

A brave batting performance by Pakistan. When everyone expected them to struggle again on this track, they have replied with a couple of handy partnerships to stretch their lead to 58 runs. Imam-ul-Haq has played a big role in that and South Africa will be ruing his dropped catch on 15. The Protea bowling was off-colour initially but then their bowlers got some rhythm. Still, they didn't look anywhere closer to their first innings heroics. The surface still is offering some help and the hosts have been slightly unlucky with a few edges also.
