England vs Ireland Highlights And Cricket Score One-off Match - Test Commentary
Now then! What will Ireland be thinking? Take the lead, bat for as long as possible? You bet, they would sense a real opportunity here to go way ahead in the game. England on the other hand, need wickets and that too quickly. You can't rule that out though, seeing the class they have in the bowling line-up and with the wicket assisting the bowlers, we are in for an exciting passage of play after Lunch. Join us in a while.
Not a lot you can write about the English batting line-up. 8 of them failed to get to double digits out of which three were dismissed for ducks. 23 by Denly is their top scorer and Olly Stone, the man who came out to bat second last, is their second highest scorer. A very sorry display by their batters.
WOW! How many of you all expected the game to be where it is at the moment? Not once had I thought, Ireland would, let alone win a session but even have a chance of doing so but they have proved me and surely many others wrong. After being asked to field, their bowlers have delivered and in some way. Tim Murtagh and Mark Adair ran through the English batting line-up. The latter played more of a supporting role whereas the former was the mainstay. He picked his maiden fifer in his first spell itself. Boyd Rankin then joined the party and bagged two for himself. Thompson can be a touch disappointed with how he bowled but overall, Ireland will be over the moon at the moment.
It is Tim Murtagh, the 37-year old, the star of today for Ireland, the tormentor-in-chief leads them off the field. He receives a standing ovation as he does and it is well deserved. It is due to his efforts, Ireland head into the LUNCH BREAK as the happier side.
Mark Adair to Olly Stone. OUT! Plays it on! The bowling change does the trick for Ireland. Extra bounce does the trick for Adair here. It is on a length and around middle, takes off after pitching. Stone looks to defend but the ball hits his arm and then deflects onto the stumps. ENGLAND HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 85!
Mark Adair to Olly Stone. FOUR! A little too full this time by Adair. The ball was there to be hit wide outside off and Olly gives it the treatment. He gets down on one knee and drives it through the point region for a boundary.

This is around off and it is a little shorter in length. Broad looks to defend but there is a sound as the ball passes the bat. The keeper, William Porterfield takes it brilliantly by diving to his right. An appeal follows but the umpire shakes his head. Ireland review and Ultra Edge shows a spike as it passes the bat. Ireland continue to stay on top here.

Second wicket in the over for Murtagh and 4th overall. He is breathing fire at the moment. Once again it is the movement off the pitch which gets the better of the batter. It pitches on off and then jags back in sharply. Woakes like a few other English batter, ends up playing outside the line. The ball hits him high on the back pad. An appeal follows and the finger is up. An appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Woakes reviews. Replays roll and they show that the ball is clipping the top of middle. England don't lose their review though but are in big, big trouble here.

Test match cricket is back after a long break, 133 days to be precise, however, this is not the typical 5-day Test but a 4-day game and it is a clash between the neighbors, England and Ireland in the home of cricket, Lord's. It is a chance for the hosts to prepare for the upcoming all important Ashes. However, it will be interesting to see if they are over their World Cup win. A couple of new names have been included in the XI and some regular ones have been rested. They are still favorites to beat the Irish side who have a chance to prove a point. They have lost both the Test matches that they have played till now but would be eager to get their first win. They will have to play out of their skins if they are to do so. Stay tuned for the toss and teams.
Ireland on the other hand, will love a wicket here. Can they pick one? We will have to wait to find out.
Now then, England have just the one over to play out. It will be 6 nervy balls. They need to come out unscathed.
England were excellent in this session. They got their lengths right, got the ball to do a little. Especially Broad and Olly Stone. The two finished with 3 each. Curran took one and Moeen Ali got the last one.
A session which England will be mighty pleased with! They have managed to crawl back in the game. Ireland is still ahead but they would surely not be pleased with how they batted in this session. They were just two down when they entered this session but then lost wickets at regular intervals. After Stirling and Balbirnie fell, the middle order failed to contribute a lot. At once, it seemed the lead would not cross 100 but a gritty knock from Kevin O'Brien and contributions from the lower order saw them extend their lead to 122.

The target is not a tough one but Ireland will have to bat really well to chase this down. The conditions, by judging after the first ball bowled, seem to be good for bowling. If England get it right, they can surely defend this. An exciting 4th innings awaits. Join us in a while.

However, a middle order collapse saw England struggling, with their lead at 126 and 8 wickets down. Handy contributions from Sam Curran and Broad saw them get close to 200. They were hopeful of the last pair adding some runs today morning but that was not to be as Thompson knocked Stone over on the first ball of the day itself.

Welcome to Day 3 of this one-off Test between England and Ireland. Day 2 was another action packed day as both teams took the lead in the game but in the end it was Ireland who ended the day on top. England batting once again saw a collapse as they found themselves from 171/1 to 248/8. Sam Curran's cameo along with Broad in the end saw England edge past the 170-run mark. This might be the last day of this Test and at this point in time one feels the match is right in the balance. There was rain earlier in the day but the forecast for the day looks good, let's hope that it stays true and we do not have any interruptions in what promises to be another exciting day of Test cricket.
... Day 3, Morning Session ...
Now then what is in store for us tomorrow? More rain? An England win or an Ireland win? If the weather stays good, it could well be the last day of this Test match. England lead by 181 at the moment. They would hope they can somehow get past the 200-run mark. Ireland on the other hand, need to get the last wicket quickly and then bat well. Another exciting day of cricket awaits. Join us at 1100 local (1000 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
What a day of cricket we have had! It was Ireland who entered the day as favorites and started off well by sending Burns back early. However, England then fought back courtesy a 145-run stand between Roy and Leach which turned the tide back into England's favour. However, once the two fell, the procession started. England slipped from 171/1 to 248/8. Curran then counter-attacked, played a handy innings, and was well supported by Broad and the two took England close to 300. Sam did fall but Broad and Stone ensure they take England past 300 and they are not yet done.
So that is it! It was inevitable once the players went off and it was even more obvious once the rain arrived. STUMPS HAVE BEEN CALLED ON DAY 2!

Sam Curran is the new man in for England.
Mark Adair to Joe Root. OUT! There goes Joe Root! The dropped catch has not cost a lot. Adair who has been Ireland's best bowler today, has got the big fish. An excellent catch too by Wilson. Also, that wicket means, the last recognized batsman is out of here. 150 now looks difficult. Root takes a few steps ahead and Adair bowls it just ahead of a length and around off. It shapes away. ... Day 2, Session 3 ...
Ireland on the other hand, suddenly hit the right lines and lengths in the second half of this session. Their bowlers got the ball to swing, especially Adair who has been really impressive. They know if they get a couple more quickly, they would then feel, they have a real chance. A really exciting last session awaits. Join us in a while.
What a session this was! 87 runs and 4 wickets in it. The game hangs in the balance as the players make their way in for Tea. It started off though with England having their noses ahead. They entered the session at 122 for 1 and Leach and Roy continued from where they left off in the previous session. They kept scoring freely until Thompson knocked Roy over. Then, Leach fell 8 short of a ton. Denly and Bairstow did not stay at the crease for long and all of a sudden England found themselves in a spot of bother. They lead by only 87 runs though they have the ever reliable skipper, Root, the batters coming in are not in great form. The hosts would hope, the others play around him and Root scores something big.

Mark Adair to Jonny Bairstow. OUT! Umpire's call it is. Bairstow grabs a pair in this innings. Just like in the first innings, it is the inswinging ball which has outdone him. It is pitching around off and comes back in after pitching.Bairstow looks to defend but plays all over it. The Irish players put a loud and confident appeal. Aleem Dar agrees with him. Bairstow takes it upstairs straightaway. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows no involvement of bat. Ball Tracker rolls in later on and shows that the ball was clipping the top of middle and leg. Not the start to the Test summer Bairstow would have wanted. Maybe the gruesome World Cup campaign has taken it's toll on him. England lead by 72, meaning they are half the side down under 100 here.

Surely that is the last way he would have wanted to be dismissed and surely it is the last thing England would have wanted. England are effectively 72 for 4. This is on off, Root works it towards mid-wicket and calls for a run but then throws Denly the dummy who is halfway down the track. Too difficult for Denly to get back now. Welcome to Day 2 of this one-off Test between England and Ireland. After a horrific day for the hosts they trail the Irish by 122. The hosts will need to put up a much better display after their horrendous performance on Day 1. The visitors, on the other hand, have a real chance to stun the World Champions and shock the cricketing world with a gigantic win at the home of cricket. The Irish bowlers will be looking to replicate their performance from Day 1. An intense battle awaits us on a hot and sunny day.
... Day 2, Session 1 ...
England trail by 122 and they will need to bat well here if they are to avoid an upset. They are surely capable of doing so. Ireland on the other hand, will hope they can replicate their performance of the first innings. 20 wickets fell today! Will the bowlers dominate tomorrow as well or is Day 2 going to be one for the batters? We will have to wait to find out on Thursday 1100 local (1000 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
The hosts elected to bat and were bundled out for just 85 runs. Tim Murtagh was the star with the ball for them as he picked a maiden Test fifer. Many expected the English side to do the same to the Irish. However, the Irish top order showed great determination and at one stage, Ireland seemed like they could take a big first innings lead. However, after Tea, things changed. The English bowlers found their lines and lengths. They kept taking wickets at regular intervals and did not let Ireland run away with the game.
England or I should write Jack Leach has negotiated the six balls and England will enter Day 2 unscathed. What a day though of cricket we have had here. Yes, Ireland will be the happier side of the two but England won't be too disappointed after how the day began for them.

So that is it from this game! It ended in a very one-sided manner but, trust me, it was one enjoyable game. In the end, the team which everybody thought would come out on top, did. England now will turn their attention to the all-important Ashes. There are still a few days to go for it though. For now, you can switch tabs and catch all the action from the ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Let me remind you, it is Malinga's last ODI so you do not want to miss it. Until next time, goodbye and take care!
Jack Leach has been awarded the MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD for his excellent 92 in England's second innings. He was the top scorer of the game and to add to that, he is not even a regular batsman.
It was quite obvious that England were going to put in a better effort with the bat than they did in the first innings. However, the batter who top scored for them was a surprise as it was the nightwatchman Jack Leach. Roy too had a good outing in his second Test innings. When the two were batting, it seemed like they would bat Ireland out of the game but the tourists did really well to fight back and enter the 4th innings on level terms. However, the conditions were one which a bowler would love and England made complete use of it and won the game by a whopping 143 runs.
Ireland though will be very disappointed with how this Test match ended having started it off in the best of manners. After being asked to bowl, they toppled England out for just 85. Tim Murtagh was the star as he finished with a fifer. England however, did not let the visitors run away with the game as a combined bowling effort by them only let Ireland take a lead of 122.
WOW! That escalated quickly! England have blown away the Ireland batting line-up in just the 15.4 overs. This Test match started with one team being bowled out in one session and has ended that way too. Yes, this was going to be a tough chase but not many would have thought England would win so easily. Just the two bowlers were needed for them. Woakes and Broad. The former took a six-fer and the latter, a four-fer.
Chris Woakes to Tim Murtagh. OUT! That is it! Woakes ends the game with the sound of Timber. Fuller ball on leg, Murtagh swings his bat at it but misses. Woakes does not and he disturbs the leg pole. ENGLAND WIN THIS ONE OFF TEST BY 143 RUNS.

Boyd Rankin is the last man in.
Stuart Broad to Andy McBrine. OUT! Root with another catch! 4th wicket for Broad and England just a wicket away from wrapping this Test. Broad bowls it fuller around off, it moves away slightly after pitching. This is too good a ball for a number 10. McBrine looks to defend but ends up getting an outside edge to first slip. Joe Root there, takes his 4th catch of the innings.
Chris Woakes to Tim Murtagh. Play and a miss! Good length ball outside off, Murtagh swings his bat at it but misses.
Tim Murtagh is the next batsman in.
Chris Woakes to Stuart Thompson. OUT! Caught! 5-fer for Woakes and he goes into the honors board at the Home of Cricket. It is pitched on off and the ball goes with the angle, Thompson goes chasing after it with his drive. He gets nothing but a fat outside edge. The ball goes to the right of Root. The English Test skipper moves to that side swiftly and takes his 3rd catch of the game. Woakes takes the ball, raises it up and soaks in all the applause. He now technically becomes the first Englishman to take a 5-fer against Ireland.
Chris Woakes to Stuart Thompson. Bouncer! It is around the body, Thompson ducks under it.
Chris Woakes to Stuart Thompson. Hit with venom but straight to mid off. Full on off, Thompson hits it right off the meat of the bat but to the man at mid off.

Andy McBrine is the new batsman in.
Stuart Broad to Mark Adair. OUT! Cleaned 'Em! Broad has the last laugh. He serves three short balls and then goes full. It is around off and nips back in, Adair looks to drive but just like the previous batsmen before him he too leaves a big gap between bat and pad. The ball once again goes between that gap to disturb the off pole. England just 3 wickets away from a win here.
Stuart Broad to Mark Adair. SIX! One trick too many and Adair has gone blow for blow here. Broad dishes another short ball, Adair this time pulls it off the middle over the mid-wicket fence for a maximum.
We will have a slight delay and rightfully so. The physio will be out now to have a look at Adair's helmet. These blows are very dangerous and a slight delay is better than a permanent damage.
Stuart Broad to Mark Adair. Another nasty blow on the helmet. Broad bangs it short on the body, Adair looks to pull but misses and the ball hits him flush on the helmet.

Mark Adair walks out to bat next.
Stuart Broad to Kevin O'Brien. OUT! Ireland are falling like a pack of cards! Broad gets his second and probably Ireland's last hope, Kevin O'Brien is walking back. Stuart lands it on a length and around off, it jags back in sharply. Kevin O'Brien looks to play at it by staying rooted to his crease. He misses and the ball hits the pads. Broad is already celebrating as he starts appealing and the umpire raises the finger. Kevin O'Brien does not review and rightly so as Hawk Eye shows three reds. England just 4 wickets away now. Still just over 30 minutes to go in this session.

Stuart Thompson is the new man in.
Chris Woakes to Gary Wilson. OUT! England manage to overturn the on field umpire's call. Half the side back in the hut for Ireland. Woakes bowls it full and this one comes in to the right-hander. Wilson is done for the pace and swing here. He looks to defend but misses. The ball hits him on his back pad and the English players put in a huge appeal. The umpire though does not agree with him. England players are pretty sure they have their man. Root signals the T. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows no involvement of the bat. Ball Tracker rolls in next and it shows three reds. The umpire will have to change his decision and Wilson too is out of here.
LBW appeal taken upstairs. Wilson is the man in question. He has not been given out. Let's see if England can overturn this decision.
Chris Woakes to Gary Wilson. Good length ball around off. It moves away after pitching. Wilson looks to defend but misses.
Gary Wilson is the next batsman in.
Chris Woakes to James McCollum. OUT! Caught! Third wicket for Woakes! He was not getting much movement in the start but now he is making the ball do the talking here. It is on the channel of uncertainty, i.e. very close to the off pole. McCollum too falls for the trap and goes for a push. He ends up getting a thick outside edge. The ball flies to first slip. Root there takes it with relative ease.
Stuart Broad to Kevin O'Brien. Good length ball but it is on the pads, O'Brien looks to flick but the ball kisses his thigh pad and goes behind. Bairstow dives across to his left and takes it on the up. There is a stifled appeal but nothing from the umpire.
Stuart Broad to Kevin O'Brien. Another bumper but this is outside off, Kevin ducks under it easily this time.
The physio is out to have a look. In the meantime, the umpires have called for DRINKS! All England after the rain interval. Early wickets was the call for the hour for them and they have got three. Ireland are in big trouble here. They need another 158 and they will have to bat really well to get that. They have Kevin O'Brien and McCollum who is looking solid out there but they need the two to continue. Will we see them fight back or will England continue to dominate?
Stuart Broad to Kevin O'Brien. Ouch! That is a nasty blow! Broad bends his back and bowls short. It is on middle and leg, Kevin looks to duck but is lat in it. The ball hits him flush on the back of his helmet. Broad has a word with him to check if he is fine. O'Brien gives a thumbs up to it but a mandatory helmet check will be done.
Stuart Broad to Kevin O'Brien. FOUR! Edgy but all along the ground. Full on off, Kevin looks to play it straight but ends up getting a thick outside edge which skews all along the ground through backward point for a boundary.
Stuart Broad to James McCollum. On the pads, McCollum flicks it to mid-wicket.
Stuart Broad to James McCollum. Play and a miss! England creating bucket loads of doubt in the batsman's mind here. This starts on off and moves away. McCollum goes chasing after it but luckily does not edge it.
Chris Woakes to Kevin O'Brien. Just short of first slip. Fuller ball around off, the line and length is perfect to trouble the batter. It does trouble Kevin. He looks to defend but ends up playing inside the line. Luckily for O'Brien it falls short of first slip.

This time he bowls it full and nips it back in. It is pitched around off and comes in, Stirling looks to play it straight but leaves a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball goes right through that gate and disturbs the stumps. Ireland have their back against the wall now. England needed early wickets they have got 3 here.

Paul Stirling is the new batsman in.
Stuart Broad to Andy Balbirnie. OUT! Caught! This is champion stuff from Broad. Bowls two short ones to Balbirnie and now bowls a brilliant good length ball. It is pitched on off and moves away. It is perfectly in the line of uncertainty. Balbirnie was in two minds, whether to leave or defend. He goes with the latter option and ends up getting a thick outside edge. It goes straight to Root at first slip who takes a very comfortable catch. Big wicket for England as Balbirnie was the best batter in the first innings.
Stuart Broad to Andy Balbirnie. Bouncer! Broad peppering Balbirnie with some short stuff here. This time it is on middle, Andy learns from his previous mistime hook and ducks under it.
Stuart Broad to James McCollum. Full on off and middle, McCollum glances it off the inner half of his bat towards mid-wicket for one.
Stuart Broad to Andy Balbirnie. In the air...but in no man's land. Short ball bowled at 86 mph. It is on the body, Balbirnie is rushed to play his pull and he gets very little to no timing on it. Luckily for him it falls well short of the man at deep square leg.

Stuart Broad to James McCollum. On middle and leg, McCollum flicks it to the on side and gets a single.

McCollum looks to defend but misses. The ball hits him on the thigh of his back leg. England players put in a big appeal but it is turned down by Aleem Dar. They think about the review but opt against it.

Andy Balbirnie is the new man in. He scored a half ton in the first innings. Something of the same is what Ireland will be hoping.
Chris Woakes to William Porterfield. OUT! Brilliant catch from Bairstow! Woakes corrects his line and pitches it on off and middle. Chris finally manages to move the ball off the deck. Porterfield looks to defend but the away movement sees the ball kiss his outside edge. It goes low to the left of Bairstow behind the stumps. Jonny dives to that side quickly and takes a good low catch. This is the thing with Woakes, if he gets a ball right it usually ends up being converted into a wicket. Ireland have lost their skipper early here. This Test match is evenly poised here.

Chris Woakes to William Porterfield. Outside off, WP has nothing to do with it.

The ball hits him over his knee roll. There is a huge appeal but the umpire is unmoved. Joe Root, Bairstow and Broad think about the review but don't take it. Update - 1213 local - Good news folks! The rain has stopped, the covers are coming off and play is set to restart at 1230 local, weather permitting that is.
Not again please! The drizzles have got slightly heavier so the umpires have called for the covers and the players are out of the field. Also, more covers coming on, not a good sign this. The good news is the forecast is not that bad for the day so let's hope that it is not a big delay.
