Amidst all the rumble, Cheteshwar Pujara has stood out royally. His runs scored and the strike rate might be a cause of concern for some but in reality, had he not been there, India might well have been bowled out. Only two batsmen have managed double figures so far and the visitors will hope to see off the day without losing more than a wicket.

The duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli has been watchful so far. They have been lucky to survive as well. The Indian skipper was dropped on 11 by Philander and it was not a difficult chance. Faf du Plessis also missed a trick as Ngidi trapped Pujara in front of the stumps once but he didn't challenge the decision. However, credit to the experienced duo for fighting it out. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi have played the perfect foil to Vernon Philander to keep the batsmen guessing. Will the Proteas continue to have a firm grip over the proceedings? A top start to the game for the Proteas. They didn't win the toss but got the desired choice of bowling first on a conducive track. They have been all over the Indians, picked up early wickets and kept a stern check on the run-flow as well. The ball has swung like a banana, bounced steeply and seamed off the deck substantially to test the batsmen. Shaun Pollock doing the pitch report says that there is a good grass covering on the track. States that the surface is nice and hard. Feels that there are a few cracks which can come into equation as the game progresses and the captains might be tempted to go in with the sole spinner. Ends by saying that as it is a spicy track, a captain should opt to field first if he wins the toss.

India, on the other hand, have failed to come to terms with the conditions. Their batting has been exposed while their bowling has only been good in patches. The visitors will hope for a much-better all-round performance from their players. The fact that they have never lost a Test match at the Wanderers augers well for them. Winning the final of the T20 World Cup at this venue is also a memorable event for them. That will give them some confidence heading into this encounter. Rahane is likely to be brought in as he has a solid technique and a good overseas average in Tests. Will the away side bounce back and avoid a whitewash? Or will the Proteas run away with the show? Hello and a warm welcome for the 3rd and final Test in Johannesburg at the Wanderers. The hosts have truly ruled the roost in home conditions. Their pace attack has flourished even in the absence of the injured Dale Steyn. The debutant, Lungi Ngidi rose to the occasion in the previous game and skittled the opposition. The hosts' batting has been a bit vulnerable at times but still they have managed to stay ahead in the game. Inflicting a whitewash is on the cards and on a surface which assists swing and seam movement, the odds of coming out on top only gets bolstered. Going out with an all-pace attack might be an option for them considering that overcast conditions are predicted throughout the course of the game.

Bumrah was at his best today. He bowled with a lot of fire to get the better of the batsmen and finished with a five-wicket haul. Kumar was on the money as well and took three wickets. Constant wickets meant that India never let the game drift away. The cracks have opened up even further and it will be a difficult task for the batsmen. It will be an acid test for the visitors. The Proteas have managed only a slender lead of 7 runs but they will be still pleased psychologically. The handy contribution of 35 runs from Philander down the order might prove to be the difference in the game. Amla played a brave knock to score a brilliant 61 to keep his side in the contest. South Africa lost the two big wickets of de Villiers and du Plessis pretty cheaply. The visitors were happy to see their back as they can be really dangerous. The good thing for the Proteas is the presence of Amla. He has been the calm amidst the storm and is unbeaten on 54. Philander is providing him good support as well. Kumar gave the ideal start to India this morning by outfoxing Elgar and he consistently bowled in testing channels. Apart from him, the other seam bowlers were a bit off target. They bowled pretty short when the ball was moving around a lot. Shaun Pollock pointed out in the pitch report that the visitors need to bowl a stump-to-stump line and hit the fuller lengths. It didn't happen that much and the 64-run stand between Rabada and Amla stole the show. India will be eager to nip de Villiers out early otherwise they will be staring down the barrel. South Africa are in a commanding position, thanks to the enterprising knock from Rabada. If your nightwatchman scores 30 runs on a juicy track, it gives you a lot of confidence. Shaun Pollock doing the pitch report says that there was prodigious seam movement on offer yesterday. Informs that a few batsmen went back with some bruises. States that the ball is misbehaving on the odd occasion due to some cracks present on the surface. Points out that the cracks are situated on the good length area close to the stumps. Feels that there are chances of some balls staying low and some taking off if they hit the cracks. Reckons that the Indian bowlers should aim to bowl a stump-to-stump line. Ends by saying that it won't be an easy task for the batsmen throughout.

However, you can never afford to relax when the ball is deviating so much. The cracks will only open up more and can catch you by surprise. At present, there is bright sunshine in Johannesburg but there are chances of rain later in the day. Expect an absorbing day of cricket.

South Africa, on the other hand, are relatively well placed. With the likes of AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis waiting in the wings, they will be moderately confident. It will be a test of the hosts' character and if they manage to stand tall, they can put the visitors under a lot of pressure. The morning session holds the key for them. If they come out on top and keep the scoreboard ticking, the momentum will be on their side.

Hello and a warm welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the Wanderers Test. The batsmen fell like a pack of cards yesterday on a surface which provided a lot of assistance to the pace bowlers. Run-scoring is proving to be a difficult task and you need to be astute in your technique and decisive with your strokeplay if you are to thrive here. 187 is not a big total but on this spicy surface, it is a competitive one. Cheteshwar Pujara mentioned in the post-match press conference that it is as good as scoring 300 runs. Still, the Indian seamers need to be on target if they are to make optimum utilization of the conditions on offer. An all-out pace attack augers well for them.

Right then! Only a day has gone by but the bowlers have got exaggerated movement and ruled like kings. Tough times lie ahead for the batsmen. Will the Proteas fight fire with fire? Earlier, the visitors were skittled out under 200. A couple of factors were the reason for their poor show with the bat. One was that some batsmen gifted their wickets away. Only Pujara and Kohli managed to get themselves in and scored important fifties. The South African pace battery bowled with a lot of heart as well. It was a collective bowling performance from them. Every bowler found himself in the wickets column with Rabada's 3-fer stealing the show.

What an absorbing day of play we have witnessed at the Wanderers! 82.4 overs, 193 runs and 11 wickets - that sums it up. India were ominous in the final 25-odd minutes of the day and got the prized scalp of Markram as well. Kumar and Bumrah breathed fire and got a lot of movement to trouble the Proteas.

South Africa, on the other hand, seemed to lose focus on the game. They were probably trying too hard, did get a couple of wickets early but then were frustrated by Kohli and Vijay. The fielding side would have wanted this game to end and hence a barricade of short stuff ensued but the visitors were too good for them. Philander, Rabada and Morkel picked up 3 wickets each but perhaps at a cost of an extra 100 runs.

India have done exceedingly well to reach close to 250, when they needed around 100 less. The pitch is spitting but the batsmen hung in there. After a long time, one could witness a collective effort from the batsmen. Rahul and Pujara fell early this morning, but Vijay, Kohli, Rahane, Kumar and Shami - all fought hard and took the innings into the third session. At one stage, there were talks of the game being abandoned due to a poor pitch but India have shown great mental and physical grit.

Should play be called off due to the dangerous pitch? Do India have enough? South Africa have no choice but to try and bowl out India as quickly as possible. South Africa tried hard, especially Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel but then the pitch talks and all perhaps distracted them. The last 45 minutes they were completely off boil and their focus looked like somewhere else.

Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya falling in quick succession would have pumped up the Proteas but then, the stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar would have frustrated them. Both offered chances, both were put down. The partnership is now worth 51 and in the last 30 minutes, there did not seem to be too many demons on the track.

India's session. 99/2 in 24.1 overs. Excellent run rate, not much wickets lost, catches dropped by the opposition, copping blows on the body and giving a message to the opposition that we are here to fight. The lead is close to 200 now and the Proteas would be more than worried.

As we saw the players heading back to their dressing rooms, the umpires were having a conversation with the groundsmen. They have been told to do the repair job on the pitch. Rahul departed cheaply and so did Pujara but the skipper joined forces with Vijay and kept the Protea bowlers at bay. Kohli mixed caution with aggression to perfection while the Monk was as cool as a cucumber. The 43-run stand between the duo has given the visitors the push they needed. Philander was the pick of the bowlers while the others were decent as well but the touring batsmen deserve the credit for being resilient. If the lead goes past the 150-run mark, India will believe that they can't lose this game. In contrast, the home side needs to keep picking up wickets and give away as less as possible in order to stay in the contest.

Ideal tonic for South Africa going into the break. Getting the wicket of Vijay might just lead to a collapse as the Indian middle order has been shaky throughout this series. Barring that, you got to say that this has been India's session. Agreed that they lost three wickets but they have added 51 runs as well on an extremely difficult track.
