New Zealand vs India Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - Test Summary

End of Over : 1.4 NZ: 9/0

So that is it from the first game! A convincing win for the hosts. Also, this is India's first loss in the WTC. They though need to come back stronger in the next game if they are to avoid a defeat in this series. The second Test begins on the 29th of February at 1130 local (2230 GMT, Previous day). Till then, take care and goodbye!

New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson, says it was an outstanding effort, especially against a very strong Indian team. States they were excellent with the ball first up and followed it up with the bat as well. Admits the lower order contribution was crucial and it was a team effort. Mentions they did not know what to expect from the wicket but it was very windy and they got it to move around which the bowlers made use of brilliantly. Also adds further that Jamieson was brilliant in this game with both bat and ball. Further states that Southee was hungry to do well and he showed what he is capable of, also, he along with Boult showed how lethal the left-arm, right-arm combination can be.

Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, says the toss turned out to be very important but they were poor with the bat. Further adds anything over 220 or 230 would have been different and the way they bowled to the lower order was also not that great. Admits they were good till the first 7 wickets and they wanted to keep the lead under 100 but the contribution from the lower order put them out of the game. Mentions it is now about what they have learned from this game and they will be eager to bounce back. Also tells the youngsters will learn, it is not easy to bat here and Shaw will learn, Agarwal though was really good and he and Rahane were the only two batters who showed some fight with the bat. He hopes the batters can take some responsibility with the bat in the next game.

Man of the Match, Tim Southee, says it is a great win, to beat a quality Indian side, it is very pleasing and it was a combined team effort. Further adds today morning was a massive time in the game, they wanted to take a couple of wickets before the second new ball was available and they did so. States there was some swing and they made good use of it. Mentions their bowlers did really well to bag all 20 wickets. On being asked how was the wicket, he says there was more on offer than usual, there was heavy wind blowing which helped them swing the ball and on Day 4, there was some extra bounce.

The New Zealand bowlers were exceptional second time around as well. Trent Boult did the job on Day 3 and it was Tim Southee who starred on Day 4. The former ended with a four-fer and the latter with a fifer. Southee finished with 9 in the game. Also, the Kiwis stuck to a plan in this innings which worked out brilliantly for them. In the end, it was a combined effort by the New Zealand side to take an unassailable lead in this series.

India performed no better with the bat in their second innings as they once again failed to cross the 200-run mark. Agarwal was the only one who showed some fight with a 50 but no other batter managed to cross the 30-run mark. However, they did manage to take a lead and make the Kiwis bat again but it was a slender one which the hosts managed to knock out in no time.

In reply, New Zealand batted with a lot of responsibility! They managed to form a lot of handy stands and a couple of big ones which is exactly what you need in a Test match. Kane Williamson was the top scorer for them. There were three batters who got off to starts. However, it was an overall batting effort by them and that effort took their lead to 183. For India, they did not have the same conditions to bowl which the Kiwis had but their bowlers did look off color. Bumrah and Shami both were disappointing, Sharma and Ashwin though did decent. Especially the former who bagged a fifer.

So then, just the 10 balls to knock these runs off! It ends a comprehensive and a very dominant performance from the hosts! A thumping win to be honest against the number one ranked side in the world. Right from the word go, it was the Kiwis who bossed this game. Yes, they were lucky on day 1 as they won the toss, opted to bowl in conditions which were the best to bowl in, in this Test match, however, they made excellent use of it and bundled the Indians out for just the 165. Jamieson was the star for them as he shone on debut with a four-fer. Southee too took four but Jamieson's 4 included, Kohli, Pujara, Vihari and Sharma.

Summary

India will chase maiden Test series win in New Zealand this century when they face the Kiwis in the first game of two-Test series, the first of which begins on February 21 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. India’s last series win in New Zealand came in 1968 when – in their first-ever tour to the Kiwi Island – India thrashed the hosts 3-1 in a four-match Test series. Since then the subcontinent team have faced New Zealand 19 times and won just twice, once in 1976 another in 2009. Mansoor Al Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar and MS Dhoni remain the only Indian captains to have won a Test match in New Zealand – Pataudi did one better and won a Test series. Virat Kohli will hope to join this elite company and clinch India’s first Test series win in New Zealand in the 21st century.

New Zealand were battered 0-3 in Australia in their previous Test series. In the same period, India dusted South Africa and Bangladesh to become first team to win 11 consecutive Test series on home soil. New Zealand are, however, no lamb at home. Only South Africa and Australia have beaten the Kiwis in their last 14 home Test series while India’s last series defeat came in England two years ago. Since then India have won five successive Test series, including the historic win in Australia. New Zealand have an all-win record in their last five-Test series.
