A bit of an on-off day for the Kiwis. They found no swing and struggled for a major part but eventually realized that cutters are the way to go on this pitch. That foxed many Indian batters as everyone struggled to time the ball. Pick of the bowlers was Ish Sodhi, who did not allow the Indians to go after him in the middle overs.
Shikhar Dhawan though, who had a post-inning interview, reckoned that India have got enough. Opines that the pitch might get a bit slow as the game progresses but should be a good deck. However, look at India's start and their position at different stages - 154 for the opening wicket in just over 25 overs, 173 around the 30th mark, and then 238 around the 40th - clearly indicating a 350-plus score. Rohit and Dhawan set up a wonderful platform but somewhere in the middle, India lost their way. Powerplay 2 yielded 182/3, which is decent but perhaps on a small ground, it might prove decisively fatal. And then, towards the end, the death hitting barely came.
30 runs short? Or have India done well on a slower track? 86/1 in the last 10 overs. That is actually not bad for the Kiwis, considering that they picked up just a wicket. They had done well in Powerplay 3, save aside for the last 2 overs, which went for 35. How costly will that prove though?

Not the greatest of deliveries, short and wide outside off and Dhawan rightfully slashes hard. But somehow, don't know how, he gets an outside edge. Was he beaten by pace? Did he have to reach out for the ball? Ahh... we get the reason. No footwork. He just slashed at it flat-footed. The ball went behind and Tom Latham dived to his left and took a fine catch. The 154-run opening stand is broken. Meanwhile, Trent Boult gets his 400TH INTERNATIONAL WICKET!

Virat Kohli says that it was a clinical performance. Mentions that it was a par total on this pitch and it was a balanced performance by them which is really pleasing. On the batting plans, Kohli adds that after the second drinks break, he decided to go hard but then he got out and the next batsman coming in took time to get going. These are the areas they need to improve, he mentions. Adds that they were 1-0 up in the series and had nothing much to lose. Lauds all his bowlers. States that Kuldeep and Chahal bowl with a lot of heart and they are always figuring out a way to get the batsmen out. Feels that this mindset is really helping them. Smiles and says that he is looking forward to a break from cricket after the next ODI.
Kane Williamson does not look too disappointed. He walks forward for an interview. Mentions that it's a little bit frustrating for the way they are losing. Credits India for the way they played. Adds that they showed glimpses in the chase but never really kicked on. Praises his bowlers, mainly Ish Sodhi and Doug Bracewell. Feels that it's two games in a row where they have not gained any control. States that some of their dismissals were a result of going too hard. On this sort of ground, Williamson reckons that wickets in hand would be the key and that's the lesson they are taking from this game.
ROHIT SHARMA has been named the MAN OF THE MATCH. Says that he is feeling good and winning the match was really important. First ball was really interesting as he didn't know how the pitch will behave. Adds that it was a par score, not a winning score and credits the Indian bowlers. Further says that he enjoys batting with Dhawan and mentions that they understand each other's game. Feels getting 325 is always a good effort. On the venue, he replies that it's a beautiful stadium and feels that it's always nice to play in an open ground.
Should the World Cup be already handed to India? Batting boxes ticked. Bowling boxes ticked. Fielding boxes ticked. Captaincy box ticked. Superb incisive bowling. Keeping the pressure on and not giving anything loose. Then, stopping runs in the field with some terrific saves. Earlier, with the bat, the middle order came to the fore, slowly erasing doubts in the minds of the supporters. Might be 6 months too early but this team is probably 10 steps ahead of the next best. Period. Please stay tuned for the presentation.
Clearly the Kiwis lacked technique. They lacked patience too. They were able to attack Shami because he was not able to control the movement but against bowlers who were tight, they struggled and threw wickets away. Doug Bracewell scored 57 but that was more because he was playing 'I-don't-have-anything-to-lose' innings. Tom Latham looked steady in his brief stay.
324 was supposed to be 20 runs short. It has proved 90 too many in the end. When Martin Guptill's run out was missed on 0, it seemed like it is going to be New Zealand's evening. But what followed after that was just a side struggling to come to terms to against some very good bowling. The Indian seamers were relentless while 'KULCHA' then finished things off.
Another highly hyped New Zealand-India ODI. Another one-sided contest. Another disappointment. Sigh. Having seen the way the India-Australia series panned out, this is a sheer let down.

Kuldeep Yadav to Tom Latham. OUT! The magician hunts down Latham! Great flight on this one. Generously tossed up around middle and tempts the batsman to go after it. The appeal is made and the finger goes up immediately. Also, Latham was outside his crease as the fielder at slip picks up the ball and throws it onto the stumps. Kedar Jadhav to Ross Taylor. OUT! Yes. You guessed it right. Normally when Dhoni is confident, the batsman isn't. Taylor has to go. That is yet another brilliant glovework from the man from Jharkhand. Kedar Jadhav has struck and guess when? (When Scott Styris comes on air - for those who remember his jibe when New Zealand visited India last). Massive blow to the hosts and perhaps that might be the end of the run chase for them. Full and outside off, Taylor lunges to defend but misses. His back foot goes up in the air slightly and that is enough for MSD. Whips off the bails in that flash of an instant. Talk about Formula 1 Drivers taking a quick turn on a kerb. Or MotoGP bikers going low on a turn. That is fast. This is superquick. But not the third umpire. The stumping appeal is referred upstairs and one sees the result in the very first replay. But numerous replays are seen before eventually, OUT is displayed on the giant screen.
Is that a stumping? Dhoni looks confident. And normally when he does...

Full and outside off, Munro looks to play the switch hit, but misses. Is hit on the tummy with the ball spinning in and umpire Nigel does not take long to raise his finger. Munro walks across to Taylor to chat about the review but agrees that it will be a waste. Hawk Eye confirms. Now, a bit of a debate from the on-air commentators. Mike Hesson says, Munro changed his position and became a right-hander. So does not that become PITCHED OUTSIDE LEG? But then, rules are made for conventional strokes.
Lockie Ferguson to MS Dhoni. 21 in the final one, India end on 324/4! Ferguson delivers it very full and on middle, Dhoni pushes it out through mid-wicket and rushes back for the second run. The fielder fires in a throw from the deep and the keeper breaks the stumps. MS has made it safely, feels the umpire. Two more to the total.

Doug Bracewell to Rohit Sharma. Shorter one on the pads, Rohit works it towards square leg and yells out a loud 'NO'.
Doug Bracewell to Shikhar Dhawan. Almost played on! A length ball on top of off stump, Dhawan was looking to angle that away to third man for a single but the slight inswing causes the ball to take the inside edge and go whizzing past the leg stump. A single down to fine leg ensues.
Trent Boult to Rohit Sharma. Around off on a length, Rohit covers the line and defends it back to end the over. Just a boundary off it.
Trent Boult to Rohit Sharma. Good length ball on top of off, Sharma has to play at it and does so from the crease to point.
Trent Boult to Rohit Sharma. Wide! This one is way wide outside off, Rohit leaves and the umpire stretches his arms.
Trent Boult to Rohit Sharma. Make it another leave outside the off stump by Sharma. Taking his time now, after hitting a boundary.
Trent Boult to Rohit Sharma. Boult returns to his line outside off and serves it on a length, unlike the last over from Trent, Rohit is quite assured now as he shoulders arms.

Goes fine for a boundary.

PITCH REPORT - Sunil Gavaskar with Simon Doull with the pitch report. The latter has a look at the pitch and says that it is similar to the surfaces that were produced here against Sri Lanka. Feels that it is a lovely hard deck with a good covering of grass holding it together nicely. Mentions that the Indian bowling attack is a much better one than their island neighbors. The Indian legend reckons that the strong breeze blowing across the stadium should be considered before playing the shots. The Kiwi also feels that spinners might have a good role to play here due to the dimension of the field. Signs off by saying that a score in excess of 300 could be expected and will be a competitive one.
Kane Williamson says he would have looked to bowl first but maybe 50-50. Hopes that they can get some work done first up with the surface being sprinkly early on and it having some grass on it. Says that the team will look to take inspiration from the wins against Sri Lanka here and try to emulate those performances. Has a couple of changes in his team with Ish Sodhi and Colin de Grandhomme coming in, replacing Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee.
Virat Kohli says that he wants to work on and strengthen the batting first template. He believes that his team chases well and they want to do this as well. About the team, he says that there is always room for improvement despite them playing really well in the previous game. Mentions that India will be unchanged.
TOSS - Heads is the call from Virat Kohli, he wins the toss and ELECTS TO BAT FIRST.
Happy Republic Day to all the Indians around the world, a lovely day welcomes us at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. The home ground of the Kiwi skipper, Kane Williamson is the venue for the second ODI. Outclassed in the first game, the Kiwis will be hurting and licking their wounds, eyeing a comeback in this one. It won't be easy against the mighty Indian side, which is looking pretty well-oiled. Should be a cracker, can the home team pull up their socks and put up a better performance here where the visitors are going to be playing for the first time? They'd like to start well, firstly with the right call of the coin flip that is just around the corner...
That is it from this game. Both teams have a one day's break, with the third ODI scheduled at this same venue on Monday, January 28, 2019 at 3 pm local (0200 GMT). India look roaring good for 3-0. Can the Black Caps fight and keep the series alive? Do join us for that game. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
