Their speedsters destroyed India's top order and it required a patient century by Cheteshwar Pujara to provide some respectability to their total. His stands with the lower half were crucial and credit should be given to them for hanging in there.

Shami tries to play the pull shot but ends up gloving it behind. Paine dives full length to his left and takes a fine catch. They appeal and the finger has gone up. India are all out for 250!

Pitch report - Brendon Julian is by the pitch side and mentions that there is some more coarse grass on the surface than Day 1. He feels that the Indian bowlers will have to get their lengths right. Informs that only 19 from the 250 runs scored yesterday came down the ground which tells the two-paced nature of the wicket. Cheteshwar Pujara was a satisfied man last evening and has already called it one of his top five knocks. Also, he feels that India have posted a decent total on the board as he found the pitch to be two-paced and not easy for stroke-making. Let's wait and watch how Australia will respond with the bat. For India, it looks like a sorry scorecard. The top order got blown away in no time and they were reeling at 41/4 at one stage. After that, Cheteshwar Pujara found an ally in Rohit Sharma and together they formed a partnership. Just when it seemed that Sharma will run away with the show, a moment of brain fade resulted in his demise from the crease. Pujara though didn't lose hope and kept on adding partnerships with the lower order. Courtesy his hundred, the visitors have got a respectable total on the board now although it still appears below par on this surface.

End of an outstanding day of Test cricket. It all started with the Aussie speedsters derailing the Indian innings in the morning. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were stupendous with their efforts as they brought the visiting team on the mat. All of them picked up a couple of wickets apiece and Nathan Lyon also contributed to the cause by hunting down the dangerous looking Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant.

They needed something magical to dismiss Pujara and it has come through an inspirational piece of fielding by Pat. A fuller length ball on middle, Pujara gently pushes it towards mid on and wants to retain strike for the next over. Hence he takes a chance and calls his partner through. However, Cummins attacks the ball, throws himself up in the air, has just one stump to aim at and he scores a direct hit at the non-striker's end. All that happened in one motion. Wow. It's an incredible effort from someone who has bowled 19 overs in the day under hot conditions. What an athlete! The umpire goes upstairs to check for the run out and Pujara is not even in the frame. The surface offered good assistance to the seamers early on and credit should be given to the Aussie speedsters for hitting accurate lines and lengths. They kept asking difficult questions to the batsmen and succeeded in creating good pressure. Nathan Lyon has also got good purchase from the pitch as he kept it tidy and was unlucky not to get the wicket of Rahane when he was on 2. Excellent morning session for Australia! They lost the toss but then their pacers provided them with the best start possible. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood got into the act immediately and removed the Indian openers cheaply. Pat Cummins hunted down the big fish, Virat Kohli and then after offering a brief resistance, Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed. It's been a very indisciplined batting effort by India. All the four wickets went down due to loose shots attempted and they will be deeply disappointed at the moment.

India's skipper, Virat Kohli says that they will bat first. Mentions that the pitch is nice and hard with a nice covering of grass. States that adding runs on the board is always handy. Reckons that this is a difficult challenge to play in Australia. Further says that they are not taking anything for granted and lightly. On him playing in Adelaide, he says that he loves coming here and getting runs. Ends by saying that Rohit Sharma gets the nod as he can play aggressive cricket towards the end and can bat well with the tail.

Pitch report - Brendon Julian is near the playing area giving his thoughts about the surface. Starts by informing that the drop-in pitch has been used in Adelaide for the last 5 years. Adds that there is a good covering of grass and it will seam a little bit at the start but it will be slow on the first day. Mentions that the surface will quicken up as the Test progresses. Advises that as a batsman, if you get through the first hour, sessions 2 and 3, followed by the next two days will be a batting paradise.

Oh, this feeling of nostalgia. There's something special about covering or watching a Test match played Down Under. This is the first occasion in my lifetime, India are starting as favourites. They're supposed to win their first-ever Test series in Australia and more than their ranking and recent supremacy in this format, it's because the Aussies are a depleted unit. The Kohli-led team though has tried its best to downplay the situation by calling the Kangaroos a tough nut to crack in their own backyard. Hmm... no one wants to take the pressure of a favourite tag these days, so what it's the number one Test team, so what it's the 'best touring Indian team in last 15 years'... Anyway, enough talk. Hang on! The players were out in the middle and then the umpires decided to go off for LUNCH. Tim Paine is seen arguing with the officials. Maybe, he's expressing his disappointment. Australia kept on batting under the drizzle and when it's India's turn, they have decided to go off. The visitors won't complain. Do join us in a short while for the afternoon session.

A good bowling performance as a unit by India. They started on an ordinary note yesterday morning but quickly hit the right chords. Ishant, Shami and Bumrah bowled with a lot of intensity while Ashwin also impressed one and all by picking a 3-wicket haul. They now have got a little advantage and would like to bat better than their first innings to swell the lead. Stay tuned, the Indian openers will be out soon.

Australia's weakest suit is their batting and that once again let them down. However, there was a marked improvement shown by the lower-middle order, in terms of willingness to stick around and gut it out. Peter Handscomb and Travis Head batted decently and Australia would hope for their top order to come good while batting last.

So, finally India have managed to bowl out Australia but not before they reduced the deficit down to 15 runs. The 31-run stand between Travis Head and Nathan Lyon was the need of the hour for the Aussies and they won't be too disappointed at the moment. A word of praise for Head. He played a beautiful patient knock to equal his best Test score and proved that his Test saving innings in Dubai wasn't an aberration.

The reserve umpire, Gerard Abood is giving an interview. He starts by saying the rain has stopped now, they are not sure if more is coming but they are not bothered about that at the moment. Mentions the umpires will make their way out in some time and assess the pitch and ground conditions. Informs the groundsmen have started doing their work. Ends by saying they can extend play by an hour today and also add half an hour to the rest of the days to make up for the lost time.

Rishabh Pant who is giving an interview says he is loving Australia at the moment. He feels the wickets here are good for stroke making. Mentions his father always wanted him to play cricket and he has been doing that since childhood. Further adds his dad was also a wicket-keeper. States he has had good performances in the domestic circuit due to which he is in the team. Admits debuting for India was the best feeling. Ends by saying he is still learning from MS Dhoni and it is an amazing feeling to play for the country.

Coming to how the game is poised - the visitors have their noses in front, by not a lot though. They would look to bundle the home side out quickly and hope for a decent lead. The hosts, on the other hand, would like to get as close as possible first and then try to surpass the Indian total. Travis Head, the local lad, will have to do the bulk of the scoring and the home side will hope, the tail can hang around with him. The 'moving day' should probably give us a fair idea to which way the match is heading.

How many times have we seen Ravichandran Ashwin do well outside Asia? Today was one of those few occasions. He was the one who opened the floodgates, getting rid of Harris, Marsh and Khawaja in the space of 57 balls. That pegged the Aussies back and then later on, Bumrah and Ishant made further inroads. Mohammed Shami had an off day - he seemed to have hurt his shoulder and lost control totally.

Superlative bowling from India. They have bowled 88 overs, picked up 7 wickets and conceded runs at just over 2 an over. They were loose in the first session, not quite hitting the right lines but post Lunch, they hit their spot. They did not concede many easy runs and Australia had to work so hard that 250 looked like 400.

After some wayward bowling in the morning session, India bounced back post Lunch. Australia were reduced to 127/6 from 45/1 and a 50-run stand between Travis Head and Pat Cummins somewhat saved the face for the home side. The former is the key - the longer he bats, the closer Australia will get to India's total.

Talking about the day overall, Australia just had to come out for one ball, with Hazlewood getting rid of Shami. But Ishant then gave India a terrific start, removing Finch on the third ball. There was a bit of a fight, from debutant Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja, with a 45-run stand - but once that was broken, familiar problems grappled the Aussies.

India's day but Australia are hanging in there. After battling out two tough sessions, the final one seemed the easiest to bat with the ball getting softer. 74 runs came in 33 overs but three wickets were also lost.

Australia lost Harris and Marsh either side of the break and then they got the big wicket in the form of Usman Khawaja, which has pegged them back. Head and Handscomb have had a few plays and misses but have managed to hang around, somehow taking the partnership to 30.

There is nothing much happening in the wicket but the Indian bowlers, combined with excellent discipline and some assistance from the Aussie batsmen in terms of lack of footwork and patience, have made it look like a wicket is always around the corner. Full marks to Ashwin for bowling unchanged but great improvement from the seamers after an ordinary opening session.

Another grinding session. 60 runs scored and 2 wickets lost in 28 overs. India have been relentless while the Aussies have been not that patient.

To be honest, the Indian bowlers were not at their best. Their lines were inaccurate and they wasted the new ball when it was moving. By far, Ishant Sharma was the best out of the lot while Ravichandran Ashwin was decent in his 8-over spell. He although didn't get the same kind of purchase from the surface that Nathan Lyon obtained on Day 1. The visitors will be hopeful of their pacers getting into the act post Lunch whereas Australia will be wishing for a big partnership between the most experienced batsmen in their batting line-up. A mixed session for both teams! Australia just took one ball to wrap up the Indian innings early in the morning. In reply, they suffered an early setback when Finch got his furniture shattered by Ishant in the first over but after that, the pair of Usman Khawaja and Marcus Harris steadied things with a 45-run stand. The debutant showed good skill and temperament in his little knock before getting caught at silly point off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Finch tries to drive it through the line, his footwork ain't good enough and it catches some inside edge of his willow before going to clatter the stumps. The Indian skipper as usual is all pumped up. A perfect start for India. Stumps flying and as a fast bowler you just love that sight.

Ishant Sharma to Aaron Finch. Shout for an lbw! This one is identical to the last delivery and only difference was that it nipped back in a shade. Finch once again decides to leave it alone but is surprised by the inward movement. It raps him on the pads, they appeal but it has not come back in enough, feels the umpire.

Australia's bowling for some reason was flat. They failed to bowl with the same intensity as they did on the first morning. A much-better batting performance by the touring team in their second essay. Their openers set the tone and then the middle order capitalized. Pujara's partnerships with Kohli and Rahane put India in a commanding position. Now, they have a firm control on this game and with the pitch assisting spin and bounce, all the hopes will be pinned on the responsible shoulders of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Wow! That was quick. Last four wickets for four runs. The Australian team didn't waste much time in picking the remaining wickets post Lunch. Rishabh Pant adopted an aggressive approach and hammered 18 runs in the first over of the afternoon session but then Nathan Lyon roared back to claim a 6-wicket haul. The Indian tail failed to wag this time around and Australia have been set a target of 323 runs to win this Test match.

Top session for India. They have further strengthened their position in this Test match. The pair of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane dominated most parts of the morning half as they put together an 87-run stand. The Australian bowling was flat, to say the least, however, Nathan Lyon bowled his heart out and eventually snapped a couple of wickets. The Indian lead is now 25 short of 300 and they will be eager to bat at least one more session to maximize it.
