West Indies vs Bangladesh Highlights And Cricket Score 23th Match - ODI Commentary
322 to win for Bangladesh. The pitch does have extra bounce and that might help the West Indies bowlers. Bangladesh though, will aim to keep wickets in hand in Powerplay 1 and try to plan the run chase nicely. Jason Holder would want a win to celebrate his 100th ODI. Let's hope for a good chase.
Shai Hope is down for a chat with Simon Doull. He says he started off a bit slow as he needed time to get in and he is still pleased with the score they have on the board. States they have more pace and height and Hope hopes they can extract more from the surface. Wants his bowlers to take early wickets. Mentions Hetmyer and Holder are very good players and they provided the much-needed impetus.
Bangladesh's bowling was good in patches. They started well but when the wickets were not coming, they began to lose a bit of patience. However, they brought it back in the end and choked the Windies. Mustafizur was sensational in his final 4 overs, going for just 18, after conceding 41 in his first 5. His double-wicket over consisting the scalps of Hetmyer and Russell can be called as a momentum-shifting over. Saifuddin helped himself to 3 wickets as well while captain Mortaza bowled only 8 overs. In fact, there was so much rotation of bowling, that only Saifuddin bowled his full quota of 10 overs!
32/1 in Powerplay 1. Too slow? But that is the norm in this World Cup, with the template being set by India. See off the first 10 overs, then accelerate in a sensible manner, giving your hitters the right number of overs at the death. West Indies lost Gayle early but the middle order played very well today. The second, third and fourth wickets added 236 in 217 balls and with the score reading 242/3 in the 40th over, 350 looked to be on the cards. But Hetmyer's wicket stalled proceedings slightly and the West Indies just about crossed 320.
Hmmm... tough question. Which side will be happier at the moment? West Indies started slowly, then began to compensate, lost their way, got a couple of cameos, lost their way again but in the end, finished strongly. 321 is a good score but Bangladesh will feel they can chase it down.
Mohammad Saifuddin to Darren Bravo. OUT! BOWLED! Corker of a yorker and Saifuddin ends his spell with a wicket. It is a slower ball, at 126 kph, Bravo is early into his swing and misses. The Zing bails illuminate. WEST INDIES FINISH ON 321/8!

Mohammad Saifuddin to Darren Bravo. SIX! Little Bravo goes big! A boundary after 27 balls. Right in the slot as Saifuddin misses the yorker, goes full, gets it right under the bat and Bravo goes boom. Swings it over long on! Just 8 from that over, inspite of that six.

Mustafizur Rahman to Shai Hope. OUT! Caught! No century for Hope! That is such a sad, sad thing for him! Played so well for so long, got stranded of partners and eventually, neither could he bat through, nor get his century. It is the best ball in the tournament or in ODIs of late. The full toss. An easy put away, that too, on the pads and Hope puts it away as well. But straight to deep backward square leg where Liton Das takes it easily! This is turning out to be a very good finish for Bangladesh.

Mashrafe Mortaza to Jason Holder. Holder flicks this off his pads to mid-wicket for a single.
Mashrafe Mortaza to Jason Holder. FOUR! Almost a catch! Should he have stayed back and stopped the boundary instead of going for the catch? FOUR! Just short for the fielder at long on. Holder again lofts this length delivery from Mortaza to long on off the toe end of his bat. The fielder was in two minds whether to go for the the catch or save the boundary. He starts late and dives in front but the ball bounces in front of the fielder and runs away to the fence.
Mashrafe Mortaza to Jason Holder. SIX! Up, up and away! Captain dismisses captain over long on! Thats's humongous from Holder. What he couldn't do in the previous delivery he does it this time. POWERPLAY 3 time and Jason Holder comes out as well. 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle till the end. Shakib Al Hasan is back on too.
Mustafizur Rahman to Andre Russell. OUT! Caught behind! This time, there is a nick and Russell departs for a blob! Similar ball as the previous one. This is the cutter as well, pitched outside leg but this one has extra bounce. Russell looks to defend but the ball zips away, takes the outside edge and Rahim completes the formalities after diving to his right. Mustafizur completes the formalities of appealing as well, as per the norm. Does not want to get penalized by Glenn McGrath who was penalzied by umpire Hanumant Singh sometime in the early 2000s for not appealing. What an over - 3 runs and 2 wickets! Momentum-shifting?
Mustafizur Rahman to Andre Russell. Appeal for a caught behind! Nothing in it. Fizz himself is unsure. Mustafizur wants a review but Mortaza turns it down. On a length around middle and leg, Russell looks to defend but the ball seams away after pitching and just misses the outside edge. Ultra Edge shows it hit nothing.
Mustafizur Rahman to Shai Hope. A length ball, Hope looks to tuck it to the leg side but misses. Mustafizur appeals for LBW but that seemed to be pitching outside leg. The ball goes towards third man and a leg bye is taken.

Mustafizur Rahman to Shai Hope. On middle and leg, flicked through mid-wicket for a single.
Mustafizur Rahman to Shimron Hetmyer. LEADING EDGE, SAFE! Half century for Hetmyer. In just 25 balls. Joint fastest of this World Cup, along with Alex Carey who got that against India. Mosaddek Hossain to Shimron Hetmyer. MISFIELD NOW. Pressure is on Bangladesh and they are not responding well. Around off, Shimron pulls this towards square leg. Mustafizur Rahman to Shai Hope. RUN OUT MISSED! Everything happening in this over. Hope plays this length delivery outside off to short third man and sets off for a run. Hetmyer from the other end comes halfway down the pitch and stops. There is slight confusion between Hope and Hetmyer in the middle. Saifuddin picks up the ball and has a shy at the striker's end but misses it. Had he hit Hetmyer would have been a goner. But in the end they get a single though a risky one at this stage of the game.

Shakib Al Hasan to Shimron Hetmyer. Shakib bowls one down the leg side, Hetmyer looks to whack that out of the park but can only get it of his pads, towards the leg side and they steal a leg bye.
DRINKS BREAK! Just when West Indies look to get ahead with the scoring rate, they get pegged back. The good thing is that Shai Hope is still there and they need him to bat through. SHIMRON HETMYER walks in at number 5, replacing Pooran.
Shakib Al Hasan to Nicholas Pooran. OUT! In the air... taken! Pooran holes out. He walks back after getting off to a start. A good wicket for Bangladesh as he was looking good and has also been in form. Nothing wrong with him playing this shot to be honest, it was in his arc. Full and on middle, Pooran goes down on one knee and looks to clear the long on fence but his bat turns in his hands due to which he does not get the timing he would have liked. There is more height than distance on it and Sarkar at long on takes a good catch. Bangladesh once again get a timely wicket due to which the Windies are not able to get ahead in this game.

West Indies are reaching a stage where the run rate needs to be upped a little. That is what Lewis might have thought. Looks to go big, aiming to clear long off, but this one hits the bottom part of his bat. He ends up finding Sabbir Rahman, the substitute at long off. Looks unhappy with himself and trudges off. This is taking longer than expected. Mosaddek seems to be wanting his left wrist checked and the umpires have taken this opportunity to call for a Drinks Break. Bangladesh have done well so far, they have not let West Indies score freely and have also got the big fish. However, after the early wicket the Windies have managed to fightback with the likes of Lewis and Hope. The two started off slowly but have upped the ante now. West Indies would hope the two could continue whereas, Bangladesh would want to break this stand as quickly as possible.

A well-deserved wicket for MS and he set the batsman up beautifully. He kept bringing the ball back in till now and suddenly gets this one to angle across. The length and line are also perfect. He bowls it just around off. Gayle once again plays for the inswing which means he plays inside the line. Done and dusted with the National Anthems. We are all set for the action to get underway. The West Indies openers, Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis make their way out to the middle. Chris Gayle will take strike and he will be facing Mashrafe Mortaza who has the first new ball in hand. Here we go...
Both the teams are out for their respective National Anthems. It would be Bangladesh's first followed by the West Indian one.
West Indies (Playing XI) - Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope (WK), Darren Bravo (IN FOR CARLOS BRATHWAITE), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (C), Andre Russell, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas, Shannon Gabriel.
Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Liton Das (IN FOR MOHAMMAD MITHUN), Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mehedi Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza (C), Mustafizur Rahman.
West Indies skipper, Jason Holder, says he wanted to bowl too but now they have an opportunity to put up some runs. States they will have to face the first 10 overs carefully and then it should get easy. Admits they lacked intent against England but they are now eager to do well here. Informs they have one change, Bravo coming in for Brathwaite.
Bangladesh skipper, Mashrafe Mortaza, says there are some patches on the wicket. Mentions they are chasing well and hence, they want to bowl first. States they have been on and off, they have practiced hard in the last few days and are ready for this game. Informs there is one change, Liton Das comes in and Mithun sits out.
TOSS - Bangladesh win the toss and elected to field.
PITCH REPORT - Ian Smith starts by saying, the weather is good and it is going to stay good and there is very less chance of rain. Mel Jones now giving the pitch report, says they have had two games on this ground and the wicket should have something for both the batters as well as bowlers. Mentions the batters need to be patient and once they get in, run scoring should be good. Ends by saying the spinners could be used with the new ball as well.
We are almost halfway through the tournament, we are now at a stage where all the teams will be keeping one eye on the points table. Today's game sees two teams who are eager for a victory. West Indies are taking on Bangladesh. The two sides head into this one after receiving a thumping from England. However, this looks to be a more interesting battle. Who will come out on top? We will have to wait and watch.
That is it from Monday. The hosts come back in action on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, taking on Afghanistan in Manchester. That looks to be a one-sided game on paper but if the Afghans get on a roll, you never know. Join us at 10.30 am local (0930 GMT) for all the action from game number 24. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Bangladesh move to number 5 in the points table with 5 wins from as many games. They still seem to be away from the top four but that is mainly because of the aura of Australia, England, New Zealand and India. In this tournament, any team can beat any other (as Pakistan showed against England) and Bangladesh will be looking to relive that. West Indies drop down to 7th and are almost facing an exit, simply because of the challenges that await them next - New Zealand and India.
Victorious Bangladesh skipper, Mashrafe Mortaza, is quietly confident. He agrees that Bangladesh still have a chance to make it to the semis but also understands that the team will have to win all its remaining games. On his knee, Mash says that it is still giving him a problem and it is dodgy, which is why he did not bowl his full quota of 10 overs. Reckons that the turning point in the game was Mustafizur's double-wicket over which got rid of Hetmyer and Russell. Praises Shakib and the whole of the batting order for chipping in useful runs. Ends by further praising Liton Das given that he usually opens with the bat but today, he performed in the middle order.
West Indian skipper, Jason Holder, says that West Indies were probably 40-50 runs short. Feels that they could have been a bit more disciplined with the ball but let themselves down in the field as well. Stresses that with the bat, they started well, seeing off the first 10 overs but then just could not get any momentum. Laments the fact that they could never get quick runs at the death. On the bowling, he reckons wickets are the key in any chase and today, they did not get any. Hopes that they get more disciplined in the coming games.
SHAKIB AL HASAN HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. The superstar says he feels amazing and the wickets in the end he took was even more satisfying according to him. States he has been working on his batting and it paid off. Mentions it was a team effort, they restricted Windies to a decent total and the batters played their part. He felt he would get more time and opportunities if he bats at no. 3, before he used to come in at the 39th over or the 40th over which is not ideal for him according to him. Further adds he is working on his bowling too, he feels he is doing fine but he can do better. Stresses the next game will be tough against a strong Australian side and they will need to be at their best. Ends by saying the crowd has been fantastic and he hopes they keep supporting them.
Nothing much to talk about the West Indies' bowling. They struggled right from the first ball, perhaps even before the game started. By dropping Carlos Brathwaite, who was going to be their fifth bowler? Just Cottrell completed his quota of 10 overs. Russell bowled just 6. Gayle bowled just 2. Sad and sorry state of affairs and have to say - this West Indian team does not look like the one which played Pakistan in their opener. With the bat, they perhaps thought they had enough but with the platform they had got, 242/3 in the 40th over, they should have got to 350. Please stay tuned for the presentation.
65 vs West Indies. 61 vs West Indies. 29 vs West Indies. 50 vs Ireland. 75 vs South Africa. 64 vs New Zealand. 121 vs England. 124 today. 589 runs in his last 8 innings. 7 50-plus scores. 3 not outs. Average of 117.80. Strike rate of 101.72. The Jessore born Shakib Al Hasan is surely making everyone's heads turn. With his fifth consecutive 50-plus ODI score and fourth in this World Cup, he is making a statement, regaining his top spot in the run-getters category. He caught the West Indian attack by the horns and did not let them apply any pressure on him. The number 3 position suits him and sure enough - he averages 59.68 over there, best than any other position. The number 1 all-rounder just strut his stuff. Beware Australia who face him next. Beware India too.
The run chase began as if there was no pressure at all. Till this game, not even 250 was chased down in this World Cup. Bangladesh were chasing 322. Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar set the tone with a 52-run opening stand and that was followed by a 69-run stand for the second wicket. Rahim's wicket then triggered the thoughts of a possible collapse but Shakib and Liton steered the ship home safely.
The Taunton crowd is stunned. But in ecstasy and joy. There are barely any West Indian supporters and the ones supporting the Tigers are crying their voices out hoarse. They have witnessed probably one of the most clinical run chases in ODI cricket, let alone a World Cup, normally associated with the likes of England, India or Australia. Today, it is Bangladesh.
51 balls left. 7 wickets in hand. An unbeaten stand of 189 in 135 balls. A centurion. Another 6 short of a century. Boy, this has been one run chase. Lo and behold. Did anyone say Bangladesh will not make it to the semis? Think again.
Shannon Gabriel to Liton Das. FOUR! Das finishes it off in style! Gabriel bowls it short and Das swivels and pulls it away from fine leg and bags a boundary. Emphatic win for Bangladesh. All smiles in their dug out. Customary handshakes taking place out in the middle. BANGLADESH HAVE CHASED DOWN 322 WITH 7 WICKETS IN HAND AND 51 BALLS TO SPARE!

Sheldon Cottrell to Liton Das. FOUR! Another short ball and once again it is put away! Short and on the body, Das swivels and pulls it down to the fine leg fence.
Sheldon Cottrell to Liton Das. DROPPED! Very, very difficult chance. Full and outside off, Das comes down the track and smashes it straight back. Cottrell looks to save his face, due to pure reflex action but cannot quite hang on to it. The ball deflects to the leg side but Sheldon quickly gathers himself and runs after the ball and then frustratingly kicks the air in disappointment.
Sheldon Cottrell to Liton Das. Down the leg side, Das walks across and misses his flick. Not wided as he walked across his stumps.
Sheldon Cottrell to Shakib Al Hasan. Slower one, this is eased down to long on for one.
Shannon Gabriel to Shakib Al Hasan. A single to end! Full and on off, this is pushed towards mid off for one. 24 from the over, the most expensive over of this World Cup. 28 more needed.
Shannon Gabriel to Shakib Al Hasan. EDGY FOUR! Length and around off, the ball straightens. Shakib looks to defend but the ball flies off the outside edge and down to the third man fence.
Shannon Gabriel to Liton Das. No he can't! Difficult to hit those deliveries over the rope. Very full and outside off, Das jams it through covers for one.
Shannon Gabriel to Liton Das. SIX! Three in a row! This is unreal stuff from Das. He is playing with the mind of the bowler. He expected a short one and shuffles right across. Gets it and he helps it on its way over the fine leg fence. 4 in 4? Also, the 150-run stand is up.
Shannon Gabriel to Liton Das. SIX! This is even better! WOW! Das wants to end it in a hurry here. He makes room and Gabriel bowls it full. He smashes it over the long off fence for a maximum.
