South Africa vs India Highlights And Cricket Score 8th Match - ODI Commentary
1st Inn
2nd Inn
End of Over : 50.0SA: 227/9
The pitch is quite spicy. It's having some extra bounce and movement and South Africa also have a good pace attack, although they will feel the absence of Lungi Ngidi and Dale Steyn (who was earlier supposed to play this game but pulled out of the tournament last evening). Also, they have the same variety in the spin department as India but whether the likes of Tahir and Shamsi will have the same impact on the Indian batsmen remains to be seen. Do join us in a short while for the chase.
The star of the show, Jasprit Bumrah is caught down for a chat with Shaun Pollock near the sidelines. The Indian seamer states that with the new ball, they got lots of seam movement and wanted to use it by bowling a Test match length and he admits it was good to do so efficiently. When asked had he worked out de Kock during his time in the nets in the Indian T20 League, Bumrah tells that he is not so true as Quinton was in his team and that was a T20 competition so not much work was from there. He just states that he got good movement and did well against the left-hander today and he feels good about the same. About playing their first game so late, Jasprit replies that the good rest helped as they could tick all the boxes before the first game. About the surface, the pacer reckons shot-making becomes easier once the ball becomes softer and older.
The world waited for India to play their first match of this edition of the World Cup and the Men in Blue didn't disappoint them by putting on a brilliant show on the field. Considered to be one of the favourites for the title, they surely have begun well here with the ball and now it's up to their famed batting line-up to scale down this total.
Top bowling effort by India to restrict South Africa to a below-par total. It would have been even worse for the Proteas had Morris and Rabada didn't add 66 runs for the 8th wicket. Right from the beginning, the Indian bowlers stamped their authority. Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah were lethal with the new balls in Powerplay 1 and then Yuzvendra Chahal ran havoc in the middle overs. The South African innings never got going and they have ended up with a dismal performance with the bat, yet again in this World Cup.

He continues bowling this on a length and around off, once again the ball bounces a touch extra. Amla goes back and tries to defend but does not get on top of the bounce. Jasprit Bumrah to Quinton de Kock. Run out opportunity goes abegging! Dhoni misses the stumps from a close range. Don't see that happening a lot. To begin with, it is a poor ball from Bumrah, on the pads. De Kock flicks it towards fine leg. He takes one and then goes for the second run. Jadhav there throws it to Dhoni who is not standing at the stumps. He collects it, turns and then has a shy at his end but misses. De Kock did dive but had Dhoni hit, de Kock would have been a goner.

Out come the openers for South Africa - Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla. It's going to be Bhuvneshwar Kumar to kick off proceedings with the first new ball for India. The conditions are a bit overcast, so there will be some assistance for the pacers early on. A couple of slips in place. All set, here we go, Hashim on strike...
Time for the national anthems. With India playing, the stadium is jam-packed and the atmosphere is amazing. As soon as the national anthems get over, the Men in Blue get into a huddle before spreading on the field.
India XI - Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (C), Lokesh Rahul, MS Dhoni (WK), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah.
South Africa XI - Quinton de Kock (WK) , Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis (C), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, JP Duminy, Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi.
India skipper, Virat Kohli says the crowd support is always going to be massive for them here. Mentions that it is nothing new for them, they have handled such pressure and expectations of having to win each game they play, and that they just need to back their skills. States they arrived late and have seen the pattern of the games which have been played, how teams are approaching the situations and they have tried to learn from it. Further adds in Hardik, Bhuvneshwar, Bumrah, Kuldeep and Chahal they have a balanced bowling attack and they are backing them to come good. Stresses the World Cup has come at the perfect time and he is very excited for it. Ends by saying there is nothing bigger than representing let alone captaining your country in the World Cup.
South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis says they are batting first because of the make-up of their side. Mentions Hashim Amla is all fit to play and they have brought back all their experienced players for the big game. Informs they have brought in an extra spinner and gone with two all-rounders as Morris is still playing. States there is still a lot of fight left in the team. Further adds they have got 7 games left and they need to win so it is not all over. Ends by saying it is always good to play against India.
TOSS - South African skipper, Faf du Plessis flips the coin and Indian skipper, Virat Kohli calls wrongly. SA win the toss and elect to BAT FIRST!
PITCH REPORT - Sanjay Manjrekar, one of the two pitch analysts, says that it is a bright sunny day and reckons these conditions are potentially good for India. Mentions that the boundaries make this ground one of the biggest in England and he feels India might not think too much before playing their two spinners. Shaun Pollock, at the other end, feels that the surface has a lot of grass covering but it is white grass. Patchy grass might make it a bit two-paced states the former South Africa pacer and he also tells that though the wicket could be good for batting as the day goes on, there could be one odd-ball that could stick in the ground.
Humbled by England, shocked by Bangladesh! The road for South Africa in this World Cup certainly does not get easier as they come up against the might of India in their third game this tournament. For the Men in Blue though, this will be the first game, almost a week after the World Cup began. They are well-rested and should be well-prepared as well, having got a good read of how things have gone about in the tournament so far. The H2H reads 3-1 in favor of the Proteas but on current form, the Asian side starts as favorites in this encounter. Will Virat Kohli and Co. prove why and make it 3 losses for South Africa or will the Green Brigade get off the mark in the Points Table. The pitch report and the Toss are not far away...
End of Over : 47.3IND: 230/4
That's all we have from this match. India have opened their campaign with a thumping win while South Africa have suffered their third loss in as many games. On Thursday, Australia will be getting ready to face West Indies at Trent Bridge. The action begins at 1030 local (0930 GMT). We look forward to your company then. In the meanwhile, you can switch tabs to get all the updates from the Bangladesh versus New Zealand match. Cheers!
India skipper, Virat Kohli says the wait of the first game was very long. States this game was challenging and it was important to start off well. Tells that they did not win with a good run rate but the pitch was very challenging. Credits Rohit Sharma for his knock and praises the other batsmen for batting well around him. Adds they were going to bowl first had they won the toss as it is always tricky against the new balls initially. Stresses Bumrah is on another level and Chahal too was excellent. Mentions that after de Kock's catch, his hands were buzzing and that tells you how quick Bumrah was bowling. Says the first win is very important and they were confident in the field but they had to be cautious in batting as South Africa have a very good attack. Ends by saying Rohit was brilliant, Rahul and Dhoni also batted nicely and Hardik finished it well.
South Africa captain, Faf du Plessis says India were magnificent on a tough pitch. Adds that they have a really good bowling attack comprising of fine pacers at the start and then quality spinners later on. Mentions they did well to crawl back after the start they had but then the Indian spinners ran through the middle order. Tells that they still did well to get back in the game, however, they needed someone to do what Rohit did, score a ton. States they picked an extra spinner so that they could attack later on but there wasn't enough runs on the board. States that maybe Ngidi and Steyn would have made a difference in these conditions. Mentions Rabada was extremely unlucky and says he has never seen so many balls fall in no man's land. Adds Chris Morris was also very good with the ball. Admits the guys are hurting at the moment but they are still making mistakes all the time. Ends by saying the batsmen need to convert their starts.
Man of the Match, Rohit Sharma says it is a different experience than playing in India. Mentions there was something for the bowlers, so he could not play his natural game. Further adds he could not play the shots he loves and he had to play close to his body and concentrate more on leaving deliveries initially. Stresses building partnerships were the key, especially on this wicket. States it is the role of the batsmen in the middle to get the job done as they can't rely on one or two batsmen all the time. Reminds that their batters have done it on a regular basis. Tells this is the beauty of playing in England, they are playing in early June, the weather is good and you don't sweat as you do in India. Ends by admitting that it was not a typical Rohit Sharma knock as he had to take his time and make sure that the job is done.
For South Africa, it was yet another dismal batting show. They were put to a stern test by the Indian pacers and then were made to dance on the tunes of Yuzvendra Chahal. The Proteas managed a total in excess of 200 eventually and that was largely possible due to the partnership between Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada. Not just batting, these two bowled with a lot of fire as well. They created many chances up front but didn't have luck going their way. The two wrist spinners, Imran Tahir and Tabraiz Shamsi, failed to create the same impact that the Indian spinners managed and altogether it was not their day.
A smooth sail in the end for India as they cruise to a convincing win in their tournament opener! Chasing a target of 228 runs, they did lose Dhawan and Kohli quite cheaply but Rohit Sharma held one end strongly and stitched an 85-run stand with KL Rahul. South Africa managed to break that partnership and got an opening but MS Dhoni walked in and threaded yet another useful stand with Sharma to put this chase to bed. It turned out to be a really good game for Rohit, who after getting a life on 1, went on to stroke an unbeaten century.

South Africa vs India Highlights And Cricket Score 8th Match - ODI Commentary

Jasprit Bumrah to Quinton de Kock. Well bowled! Good movement off the pitch too for Bumrah. It has landed on off and then jags away sharply. De Kock first thinks of playing at it but then does well to pull his bat out of the way.
Jasprit Bumrah to Quinton de Kock. Almost plays it on! On a length and around off, it is angling away from the left-hander. De Kock looks to play away from his body and gets an inside edge onto the pads.

Time for the national anthems. With India playing, the stadium is jam-packed and the atmosphere is amazing. As soon as the national anthems get over, the Men in Blue get into a huddle before spreading on the field.
