England vs India Highlights And Cricket Score 38th Match - ODI Commentary
338 is the target! It is a huge one! India's batting line-up is a star studded-one and they will have to deliver if they are to win this game. England on the other hand have a good bowling line-up and with the runs they have on the board, they would back their bowlers. The wicket is a tricky one but still decent enough to bat on. The boundaries are short so if the Indian batters do get into their own, we are in for an exciting second half! Do join us in a short while.
The Indian bowling was really good to begin with but it was after the first 10 where things went wrong for them. Their spinners were attacked and Chahal and Kuldeep had no answers to that. The former had a day to forget, the latter did make a good comeback but still was way below the standards expected from him. Hardik Pandya could be satisfied with his performance. The pick of the bowlers though were Shami and Bumrah. The former was exceptional at the start and in the middle stages and finished with his maiden ODI fifer. He helped India pull things back when England were going great guns. Bumrah, on the other hand, was brilliant at the end. He was extremely economical, he just had the one wicket to his name but his spell was a joy to watch.
The England openers set the tone for them, after electing to bat. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow started off cautiously but after Powerplay 1, they started pounding the bowlers. The opening pair added a 160-run stand. England at that time seemed like would reach somewhere close to 400, however, once Roy fell for 66, the runs slowed down. Post the 27th over, it was hard for England to hit a boundary. Also, Bairstow soon departed after scoring a ton and Morgan once again was bounced out. India seemed to be making a comeback in the end. Root and Stokes though steadied the ship, got things back under control and once the all-rounder was set, he cut loose. His amazing knock of 79 from 54 balls ensured England end with a very, very good total.
What a batting performance from England! After back-to-back failures from their batting line-up, they have bounced back in some fashion in this must-win game. They are surely the happier side at the moment.

Stokes looks to play the paddle scoop. Bumrah bowls a low full toss. Stokes ends up scooping it straight into the hands of the fielder at fine leg. Jadeja, the sub, makes no mistake. Wait on! The umpires have gone upstairs for a No-ball check. After seeing a few replays from different angles the umpire is convinced that Bumrah's foot is well behind and The Big Ben has to walk back to the pavillion.

Shami calls for it and takes it on the second attempt. 4th wicket for Shami.

Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, says chasing is never a problem but he would have wanted to bat first too. Mentions they haven't chased after the first game in the tournament so it is a good challenge for them. Further adds they haven't focused on the opposition a lot and hence, they are quite consistent. States they have managed to find ways to win games and he hopes they have another good day. Informs Pant comes in for Shankar. Tells Rishabh Pant brings in fearlessness and if he gets going, it could be fun to watch. Ends by joking a lot of Pakistan fans will be supporting them today which is a very rare thing.
England skipper, Eoin Morgan, says they have two games to go and they hope to win both and go through. Liam Plunkett's inclusion is more tactical as they feel pace and bounce will be better suited on this surface. Informs Roy is fit to play and he comes in. Ends by saying it is about the team's character now, they have had the chat and he hopes it all goes good for them.
TOSS - Up goes the coin, Virat Kohli calls heads and it lands in Eoin Morgan's favor. ENGLAND WILL BAT FIRST!
PITCH REPORT - Sanjay Manjrekar says it is a fresh pitch. Further adds the ball turned a lot in the last game but this pitch is different, there is a lot of covering of grass. States there will be a little turn at the start and it may turn more as the game progresses. Ends by saying the team winning the toss would want to bat first.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going! England have probably been the toughest ODI side to beat in the last year or so, they headed into the tournaments as outright favorites but now, can see themselves being knocked out. The hosts have two games left and need to win both to ensure qualification. They are up against the best performers of this World Cup so far, India who need one win to make it into the semis. It is all going extremely good for them and Virat Kohli would hope to continue the same. England would have probably been favorites heading into this encounter before the World Cup began but now, on recent form, India surely have the upper hand. We still can expect a cracker. Stay tuned for the toss and other updates.
So that is it from this game! England keep their hopes alive and India have to wait to register their place in the semis. Both can do so in the next game though but there is still time for that. On the 1st July 2019, we have two different teams playing, West Indies take on Sri Lanka, that game begins at 1030 local (0930 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
England skipper, Eoin Morgan, says they had a brilliant day, right from the beginning, the decision at the toss was not easy but it went well. Credits Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow for the way they played and further adds contributions from the rest took them to a very good total. States they did really well to take on the two Indian spinners and it came off. Informs the feedback from the first innings was it got tougher to bat on and that was at the back of his head and hence, he was not very worried. Tells he was quite happy to see India weren't going all guns blazing at the end and his bowlers bowled really well. Appreciates Plunkett for his effort and says he has been outstanding, especially in the middle period and he does it on regular basis. Ends by saying the next game will not be an easy one and they can't take any team lightly.
Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, says every team has lost a game here or there, nobody likes to lose but England played better and they were more clinical. States the mood is the same in the dressing room and they need to forget this and move forward. Informs the toss was not a massive factor, they should have been better with the bat as the wicket was flat but their bowlers were very good. Tells there is not much you can do about it if a batsman reverse sweeps you for a biggie, it is difficult to contain with one short boundary. Further adds England were going towards 360 but they did well to pull them back, 15-20 runs less was what he would have liked. Also, had they got to a good start it could have been different but wickets fell at wrong time. Mentions when Pandya and Pant were in there they still had a chance but they kept losing wickets and it became difficult for them. Ends by saying MS Dhoni was trying really hard to find the boundaries but it was difficult for him.
MAN OF THE MATCH, Jonny Bairstow, says it was important they set a platform after winning the toss and opting to bat. States it has been frustrating, they know how well they can play, today they were pretty good with bat and ball and are looking forward to the game against New Zealand. Mentions they were just reacting to each ball and had no plan on how to play the spinners. Further adds India bowled well up front, a couple of inside edges went for boundaries, they had luck on their side and they cashed in when it got easy. Ends by saying this is the closest they have been to their best in this tournament and they need to continue as they probably have three must-win games coming up.
Earlier in the day, a brilliant ton from Bairstow, a breezy knock from Roy and Stokes' innings in the end set India a massive target. India would have created history if they had chased this down but the English bowlers ensured it did not happen.
The England bowling was really good! They were tight with the new ball. The bowlers after that continued the same. The only time when runs came at a good pace for India was when Stokes and Rashid were bowling. Woakes and Plunkett were the picks. The former finished with a two-fer and the latter with three-fer. It was Plunkett's wickets though which were more crucial as he got Pant, Kohli and Pandya.
Chasing 338, India needed to get off to a good start but they lost Rahul for nought. Then Rohit and Kohli played themselves in, they found it difficult to score freely but hung in there. Once they got hang off the surface, the runs started coming. They added a 138-run stand but just as the momentum looked like it would shift, Kohli fell. Pant and Rohit then added another handy stand and revived Indian hopes but Rohit probably fell at the wrong time. He was dismissed just after getting to his ton, at a time when he would have probably looked to accelerate. Pant then soon followed. Pandya found it difficult to time the ball as his innings progressed. Dhoni too struggled to find the fence and then 338 proved to be a huge target.
ENGLAND ARE ALIVE IN THIS WORLD CUP! They have beaten the unbeaten side in this tournament and that too quite comprehensively. What a time for all the players to step up. This is also, their first win over India in World Cups since 1992.
