South Africa vs England Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - ODI Commentary
1st Inn
2nd Inn
End of Over : 50.0ENG: 258/8
So 259 is the target for South Africa on a pitch that has its demons and batting has not looked easy so far. England will feel confident as they have the momentum heading into the break. But the hosts will fancy themselves chasing this target. What will happen? Join us after the break to find out.
South Africa will be a bit disappointed with their overall bowling performance. They were the second best side in Powerplay 1 but pulled things back and had England on the back foot. It looked like they would restrict them to under 220 but they couldn't find a way to break the Woakes-Denly stand. But had anyone told them they would be chasing under 260 at the toss they would have taken that so they will be happy with their efforts in the end. Tabraiz Shamsi was the star with the ball. He finished with figures of 10-0-38-3. Debutant Smuts was economical and had a wicket to his name. His fellow debutant, Sipamla, got the big wicket of Woakes but was a bit expensive.
After being put into bat, England got off to a good start as Jason Roy got them off to a flier. But once he fell, the English batting started to collapse. From 51/0 they found themselves struggling at 131/6. It looked like they will not even be able to bat out their 50 overs. But just like in Tests, it was Joe Denly who steadied the ship and his partnership with Woakes changed the tide. The pair added 91 runs for the 7th wicket. Woakes then departed but Denly took the charge and his 87 took the tourists to a score which is over the average total here in Newlands.
What a good recovery job from England. They looked down and out and it looked like they would struggle to get even 210 but 67 from the last 10 overs and some brilliant batting from Denly has seen them go past the 250-run mark and has given them a very good total on this slowish wicket.
49.62
Beuran Hendricks to Tom Curran. Brain fade from Phehlukwayo has seen them take two. Good length ball on off, Curran plays it to point and takes a risky single. Phehlukwayo there has a shy at the keeper's end but misses. There was no need for the shy as there was no one behind for the backup. The ball goes behind and they get the second as well. ENGLAND FINISH WITH 258/8!

Adds that it is a good chance for them to make a mark. Also congrats Woakes who plays his 100th ODI and says it is a moment of proud for him.
South African skipper, Quinton de Kock says that the wickets look good and he expects it not to change. De Kock says the wicket can be slow in the beginning. Informs JJ Smuts and Lutho Sipamla make their debuts. Adds that they are very talented and exciting players. Tells they love playing here as they have a good record at this venue.
TOSS - It's time for the flip of the coin. South Africa have won the toss and opted to bowl first.
South Africa got a change in administration and now a change in leadership for the limited-overs. Young and talented Quinton de Kock takes the reigns of leading the team for the first time after being made the skipper in January. He will be leading a pretty inexperienced team and would like to turn their fortunes after the Test debacle. Whereas, England also are without their two main players who helped them become World Champions. Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes both are rested for the ODIs but this should not affect the reigning champions as they have a pool of talent at their disposal. Tom Banton and Matt Parkinson might make their debut for the visitors. Can the ODI world champions mark their return to ODI cricket with a win or will South Africa avenge for the Test series loss? Hello and welcome to the first of the 3 match ODI series. Stay tuned for the toss as we are not far away.
End of Over : 47.4SA: 259/3
So that is it from this game. South Africa take the lead in this 3-match ODI series and spoil the world champions comeback in ODIs. England will look to put this loss behind and bounce back stronger. South Africa will look to wrap up the series in the second ODI. The second ODI will be played on Friday, 7th February. That match will begin at 1300 local (1100 GMT). Join us for that one. Till then, cheers!
For his superb knock of 107 South African skipper is also the Man of the Match. De Kock says that it was a good night and says he is glad to get back to winning ways. Says they had chats about how they want to take the ODI team forward and today was the beginning of it. On spinners, he says it is good to have two spinners, especially Smuts as he is an all-rounder. De Kock humbly says that it has just been one game and he hopes that captaincy serves him well. Adds that the extra responsibility brought the best out of him. Tells him and Bavuma knew running hard between the wickets was the way to go about it and they just tried to carry the momentum.
England skipper, Morgan says they were completely outplayed by South Africa and admits that they misread the condition. Tells everyone struggled with the bat except Woakes and Denly. Credits South Africa for starting the series well and says South Africa bowled better and executed better than they did. Says they lost wickets in clusters and the total was only good if they would have been able to manage to pick wickets regularly. Tells the new guys learnt a lot and adds they saw that it is not all crash and bang like T20. Says they need to continue to learn like how they did in the past.
Earlier in the day after being put into bat, England were in tatters at 131/6 but Joe Denly's fighting 87 along with a smart knock of 40 from Woakes gave the tourists something to bowl at and they managed to get to 258. It was a superb bowling performance from South Africa. Tabraiz Shamsi was the star as his 3-fer never let England going and restricted them to an under par score.
A sorry bowling performance from the world champions. They were unable to adjust to the demands of the pitch and had no ideas on how to get rid of de Kock and Bavuma. When they did, it was just too late as the game was already beyond any doubts. Yes, it is not an experienced bowling line-up but England skipper Morgan would have hoped for a better display from them. Three bowlers got into the wickets column. Root, Woakes and Jordan. The latter was expensive as well. Parkinson did not have any success on his debut.
Chasing a moderate total of 259, South Africa were dealt with an early blow as they lost Reeza Hendricks early. Bavuma then joined his skipper and what we saw from the two was just pure masterclass. They took on the English attack. The skipper and his deputy led from the front and the pair added 173 for the second wicket and killed all the English hopes. Quinton de Kock, the skipper scored a century but Bavuma fell 2 runs short of a well-deserved hundred but that did not prove to be costly as van der Dussen applied the finishing touches.
The world champions have been humbled on their first game as champions. England's nightmare at Newlands continues. What a brilliant performance from the Proteas and their life under new leader, Quinton de Kock is off to a comprehensive win. Their sorrows and disappointment from the Test series have been reduced a tad here as they take a 1-0 lead in this 3-match ODI series.

Chris Jordan to Temba Bavuma. OUT! LBW! Such an anti-climatic end to Temba Bavuma's superb innings. He has to walk out 2 short of what would have been a terrific century. Heartbreak and disappointment for him and for a moment the whole crowd goes very silent. This is a very good ball from Chris Jordan. Very full and very pacy. It is on middle and leg, Bavuma looks to defend but gets beaten by the sheer pace of it. The ball hits his pad and he goes down on the turf. Bavuma refers it upstairs in a desperate hope of survival. Replay rolls in and Ultra Edge shows that there is no bat involved. Time for the Ball Tracker and it shows three reds. No luck for Temba and he has to walk back. End of a terrific knock from him. Deserved a hundred but he will not get it. Can England manage to make a comeback in this game and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat? Looks a bit late but one can never be sure in cricket.

South Africa vs England Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - ODI Commentary
Beuran Hendricks to Tom Curran. Smart bowling. Slower bouncer from Hendricks leaves it thinking it is going over his head but the ball dips and it has not been wided.

Reminds us that the last time they were here they were not successful but hopes to change that today. Informs Matt Parkinson and Tom Banton make their debuts.
