New Zealand vs England Highlights And Cricket Score 5th Match - ODI Commentary
224 does not look a total which will challenge the tourists. However, if New Zealand can manage to get 2-3 wickets early, we could be in for a thriller. Join us back at 1515 local time (0215 GMT).
England were really good with the ball. Chris Woakes set the tone with a frugal spell first up reading 6-1-13-1. The effect of that was felt by the spinners as Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali combined together to have figures of 4/81 in 20 overs. That broke the backbone of the home side.
Nicholls and Santner batted beautifully, indicating to their top order that had they shown some patience, the Black Caps could have been in a better position. Both made half centuries and were decent enough in finding the gaps for singles and couples, with the occasional boundary.
Colin Munro was dismissed cheaply again, today in the first over. Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson then bided their time, trying to forge a partnership but could not do much. The home side kept losing its wickets to some poor shot selection and the writing looked on the wall at 93/6. But Henry Nicholls and the recent 'Midas' man - Mitchell Santner - added 84 for the 7th wicket to save some blushes for the Kiwis.
A sub-par total from New Zealand. It is a slow pitch, yes, taking some turn, but not so much that it will aid the bowlers to defend a total below 280. The Black Caps struggled for the first hour and then eventually threw their wickets away in frustration.
Tom Curran to Ish Sodhi. OUT! Taken this time. A length ball on off, Sodhi looks to send this out of the park but only succeeds in getting a top edge. Ben Stokes calls for it at deep mid-wicket and take it comfortably. ENGLAND NEED 224 TO WIN THE SERIES...
Tom Curran to Ish Sodhi. The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
Tom Curran to Ish Sodhi. DROPPED! Lucky Sodhi. Mistimes his pull to deep square leg where Joe Root comes running in, but he runs in a bit too swiftly and misses a relatively simple chance. Two runs taken.

Trent Boult is the last man in. Still 10 balls left...
Chris Woakes to Tim Southee. OUT! Brilliance from Bairstow! Well, if Hales pulled off a terrific catch on the previous ball, Bairstow has gone a level further and pulled off a stunner. A short ball outside off, Southee swivels and pulls it over mid-wicket. Jonny Bairstow keeps his eyes on the ball, races to his right, sticks out his hand and plucks the ball out of thin air! Absolutely magnificent to watch.
Chris Woakes to Tim Southee. WIDE. Anticipates the batsman to get across and bowls it miles outside off. Southee stays where he is and lets it go. Wided.
Ish Sodhi walks in at number 10, replacing Santner. Watching tail-enders bat is always fun. Either quick runs or wickets.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Santner. OUT! The fun ends for Santner. Woakes nips Santner out. This is another off cutter, bowled away from the left-hander and dragged short. Santner looks to pull but is early into the shot. He miscues it up in the air and Alex Hales covers a lot of ground to his right from deep square leg to take the catch. Nasser Hussain on air is impressed with that shot as he reckons that Hales has dropped catches like these in the recent past. End of yet another fantastic innings.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Full and outside off, carved towards sweeper cover for a single. 14 runs from that over!
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. On middle, slogged again, towards deep mid-wicket for a couple.

Chris Woakes to Tim Southee. The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot for a single.
Change of bat for Tim Southee. He will hope he connects with this one.
Chris Woakes to Tim Southee. Comes down the track and has a wild swing, but Woakes' off cutter foxes him. Nearly takes the off stump.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Santner. DROPPED! In and out. Inexplicable. A length ball outside off, Santner drives this straight to Moeen Ali at point. Should have gobbled it but he vomits it out. In she goes, off she comes. A single taken.

Southee calls Santner through for a single as the fielder from point comes in. Has a shy at the bowler's end but misses by a big margin. Southee now wants the second as he sees Chris Woakes is far back at long on. Woakes though, scores a direct hit at the keeper's end and now Southee wants the third but Santner has backed up too far. The umpires refer the direct hit upstairs but replays show that Santner is well in.
Direct hit! Is Santner gone? Referred upstairs...
Ben Stokes to Mitchell Santner. Great effort. A slower ball, around off, Santner looks to pull but miscues it in the air. The ball does not carry to long on but Joe Root makes a terrific attempt, running miles to his left from mid off. Dives but cannot get to the ball. Two runs taken.

Tim Southee walks in at number 9, replacing Nicholls. This could be over in a jiffy...
Tom Curran to Henry Nicholls. OUT! The 84-run stand is broken. A length ball outside off, Nicholls looks to swing it across the line but only manages a top edge. The ball goes high in the air and three men converge but eventually, skipper Eoin Morgan calls for it from cover and takes it. Should Nicholls have stayed till the end and allowed the in-form Santner to hit hard? Did he go too early? Did he pick the wrong ball? Too many questions when a wicket falls. Nicholls might sit and ponder about those for a while. This stand has given some respect to the Kiwi total.

He bangs this in the middle of the pitch and Munro looks to tuck it to the leg side. But the ball gets big on him and the bounce does him in. Takes the leading edge which goes straight up in the air. Both Woakes and the keeper Jos Buttler go for the catch but eventually the glovesman calls for it and takes it. Failure for Munro again.
Chris Woakes to Colin Munro. Full and around middle, Munro comes forward and places it sweetly towards mid off.
Chris Woakes to Martin Guptill. Good sharpness from ball 1. Guptill just works this wide of mid on and takes a quick single.

Ish Sodhi is giving an interview. He says that he is really enjoying his time playing ODI cricket. Did not feel he would be able to play so much for New Zealand. Admits that he has always looked to pick wickets be it any format and he feels at his best when he is attacking and when the batsmen come at him, which is the norm of today's limited-overs cricket. Adds that in the initial stages of his career, batsmen never used to attack him so much, so he used to target an RPO of around 5. But these days, with batsmen looking to attack him, he believes 6 an over is a decent outing for him. On the previous game, he says that they believed that 400 was on the cards for England but feels nice that it came along nicely for him. Believes that he is a much improved cricketer from what he was a few years ago.
PITCH REPORT - Mark Richardson has a view at the pitch and feels that this looks much better than the one used for the NZ-WIN game. Not quite fluffy but there is some coarse on top. There is grass but evenly spread. Reckons that the pacers will have a say but so will the spinners. The grass feels reasonably thick. There could be some movement in the air as well. The pitch does not feel that rock hard but looks solid. Feels that there could be something for the seamers early on.
New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, says that he too would have wanted to bowl first. Informs that the surface might do a bit in the first 10 overs but after that, it should be a batting beauty. Informs that ROSS TAYLOR IS NOT PLAYING TODAY and will be replaced by Mark Chapman. On the ground dimensions, Kane admits that fielding and batting plans have to change accordingly to the same. Does not look too much into the past games and says that every match is a new one.
England skipper, Eoin Morgan, says that the pitch looks really good and hence he would prefer chasing. Adds that his team is pretty comfortable knowing what it would like to chase. Informs that there is one forced change - Jason Roy is down with a back spasm, so Alex Hales slots right back in. Admits that every ground in New Zealand is different so accordingly the fielding plans need to change. Agrees that it is a great opportunity to play in a must-win final and along with it, a great chance to prove their worth under pressure.
TOSS TIME! Kane Williamson flips the coin, Heads is the call from Morgan and it is a Head. ENGLAND WILL CHASE.
WEATHER - It had rained last evening but as of now, the skies are pretty clear, without a cloud. The prediction is for no rain and hopefully, it stays that way.
4 matches, 3 thrillers. This has been the story of this NZ-Eng series so far. Both sides will feel they could have wrapped up the series by now, but to be honest, the series status is perfect given the cricket the two teams have played so far. Who will prevail in the decider? Hello and a warm welcome for the fifth and final ODI between New Zealand and England at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
22nd of March, 2018 marks a big day in the history of New Zealand cricket. The country gets ready to view its first ever day-night Test at home. Fascinating, isn't it? Sad, that it is only a 2-Test series. The fun will end quickly. Do join us for the first of those contests at 1400 local time (0100 GMT) for all the action from Day 1 with the Pink Ball. Until then, you can catch all the action from other international games. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Okay then! A real one-way traffic in the final game to end what was a riveting series. Three matches went down to the wire, enough to generate good interest. England were expected to win the series, at least in my opinion and they were far better in terms of resource utilization and planning execution. We now shift our focus to the Tests. England are fresh from a drubbing in Australia while New Zealand have been terrific at home. Who are favourites for that series? Predict at your own risk!
Victorious England captain, Eoin Morgan, feels that his bowlers set the tone after winning the toss. Reckons that probably there was more bounce than expected. Heaps praise on Mark Wood and Chris Woakes for their start with the new balls and later on the spinners. On Chris Woakes, he says that he has been having a wonderful winter and though he has primarily led with the ball, he can bat as well. Feels that the team work has been outstanding - not necessarily getting big hundreds but contributions from every individual. On his team's spinners, he feels there was a little bit on offer on most of the grounds while in games where there was nothing much on offer, they bowled tight lines. Credits New Zealand for producing a tight contest. On New Zealand as a tourist destination, Morgan says that the unit has enjoyed every minute of the tour and is looking forward to come here again.
New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, praises the English team for bowling very well and rues the lack of discipline by his own side with the bat. Praises the effort by Mitchell Santner and Henry Nicholls but is disappointed with the end result. Admits that his side could not give a complete performance throughout the series. On the discussions in the dressing room, Williamson says that the only talk will be the chances his team missed. Once again praises his opposition for the way his side was outplayed. Feels that England have a great depth - with both bat and ball. Further says that the greatest challenge for New Zealand in this series was to stick to their plans and execute them. Stresses that there are a lot of puzzles the team management would want to work on. Is confident that there is plenty of good work done with the white ball but a lot of work is still pending.
CHRIS WOAKES IS THE PLAYER OF THE SERIES. Admits he is surprised to receive the award as there were a few better knocks with the bat than his bowling analysis. Agrees that wickets upfront in one-day cricket are crucial and important as there are players in the opposition who threaten to take the game away from you. Also, early wickets enable spinners to come into the game. On the wicket, he says the overnight rain had some say into it, as the seamers got some purchase. Feels that as an opening bowler, you need to expose the opposition openers' weaknesses but at the same time adjust to the conditions. Need to attack but need to defend as well. Looks back to the first ODI where he was unable to win it for his side in the final over and says that you learn from such mistakes and he certainly tried to improve every game.
JONNY BAIRSTOW is the Man Of The Match. He says it is always a great moment to play for your country and that too out of your country. On his innings, he says that the platform was set by the bowlers with the Kiwi batsmen always playing catch up. Praises his team for performing as a unit. Coming to opening, he says that it is a massive difference as compared to batting in the middle order, so he is now targetting big scores. On the surface, he says there was some grip for his team's spinners, though he is not sure why, but is quick to say it was a decent toss to win. On his blinder of a catch to dismiss Tim Southee and the sledging of the crowd from behind, he just shrugs it off and says he was only concentrating on the ball. Cannot wait for the Test series to start, he says. Especially after the drubbing in Australia.
Did losing the toss mean losing the game? The home side might ponder, though toss is something which is not in its factor. It was very difficult to bat first on a wicket which looked a bit damp and which then eased towards the evening. Had the hosts bowled first, perhaps, they might have had a different outcome. But again, what will hurt them is the soft dismissals. Only three batsmen crossed the 50-mark which cannot be blamed on the pitch. Grafting and patience were required which was lacking. For England, Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid were terrific, sharing 6 wickets while Moeen was economical as well. Time for the presentation...
The Kiwis did pick up three scalps but that was more out of England throwing their wickets away in an attempt to finish the game off quickly. Mitchell Santner was the pick of the bowlers once more, while Ish Sodhi got a real hiding.
Nothing much New Zealand could have done with the ball. It was Jonny Bairstow's day and he was in a ferocious mood. 224 was not the most difficult of targets to chase down but even the slimmest of chances were cut short by the blistering 155-run opening stand of which, Bairstow made 104.
An emphatic win for England. To enter this decider and perform the way they have done takes some doing. They started the game tremendously, getting rid of Colin Munro on the third ball of the match and never looked back. And then, with the bat, Jonny Bairstow gave the Kiwis a real hiding. Totally outplayed.
Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. SIX! There is the game! Tossed up outside off, Stokes gets down and mows it over mid-wicket to seal the match and series! Victory with 7 wickets and 104 balls to spare!

Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. DROPPED! Does it matter? The googly from Sodhi, outside off, Stokes backs away and looks to cut but is beaten by the wrong 'un. Gets a top edge which loops to Henry Nicholls at cover but he spills it.

Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. OUT! That is a fantastic catch from Colin de Grandhomme! A short ball on middle, Morgan heaves this over mid-wicket. Does not seem to have got the distance but what a catch this is from de Grandhomme. He is running to his right near the mid-wicket fence and has to keep in mind the ropes behind. But he takes the catch with a dive and makes sure he does not touch the ropes. Super-cool effort. 32 more needed for England from 140 balls.

Full and outside off, Hales looks to give it the kitchen sink but the ball hits the toe end of the bat and goes straight to Kane Williamson at mid-wicket. He is disappointed with himself - just like a kid would be when he misses out on a toffee during a buffet.

Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. OUT! Not a 10-wicket victory then. Bairstow has damaged the stumps with the willow. Seemed like the only way he could have been dismissed today. A full ball outside off, Bairstow backs away to try and steer it to third man but before the bat can make contact with the ball, it disturbs the timber behind. HIT WICKET it is then, the mode of dismissal to break this opening stand. A shame to end the innings in this way. Great sportsmanship from Kane Williamson - walks up to Bairstow and shakes hands. Ish Sodhi to Jonny Bairstow. Floated outside off, JB lunges to defend but the ball spins away past the outside edge. 22 from the over - surely the most expensive of the innings? Or are we going to see more?
