England vs New Zealand Highlights And Cricket Score 3rd Match - ODI Commentary
1st Inn
2nd Inn
End of Over : 50.0ENG: 234/10
235 is the target for New Zealand to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Do they have the arsenal to chase this down? No Ross Taylor while Kane Williamson is out of form. Who sticks his hand up tonight? Stay tuned for the answer...
Decent bowling from New Zealand. They never allowed the visitors to get away and even during the Morgan-Stokes stand, they kept things under control. Colin de Grandhomme was the most surprising factor, registering his most economical figures in a 10-over spell, reading 10-1-24-1. Ish Sodhi got some beating but picked up the key wickets of Bairstow, Stokes and Buttler - the latter two, when they were going big.
Considering that Eoin Morgan was looking to bat till the end, one would say that Ben Stokes should have stayed on after his captain got out. But England were focussed more on getting quick runs and though they did get a few, they will feel they are 20-30 runs short. No batsman scored a fifty, which shows that this is not a track where a batsman is set.
Lack of quick runs on a sticky track resulted in the early dismissal of Jason Roy but then Joe Root threw his wicket away. New Zealand then came back with the scalp of Jonny Bairstow before the 71-run stand between Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes stalled them. During this stand, it seemed like 250-plus was on the cards but the skipper's wicket opened the floodgates.
A total which will keep both the teams happy. New Zealand would have aimed to restrict England under 250 while the visiting side will feel that even 235 is not going to be that easy to be chased down. Only disappointment would be the soft dismissals.

First he bowls a sharp bouncer as a response to the boundary Rashid hit on the previous ball. The batsman swings but is early and misses. Is hit bang on the helmet. Curran calls Rashid through for a single but he has barely left his crease. Boult quickly gets to the ball, picks it up, turns around, takes aim and boom. Right at the base of the stumps at the non-striker's end. Rashid is nowhere in the frame.

A bit of his mistake, as he whips this full ball towards short mid-wicket and as a habit, takes off for the single. Moeen responds and over-commits. He is already halfway down the track but then Rashid stands still. No chance for Moeen to come back as Colin de Grandhomme lobs a throw to the bowler who does the rest.

Chris Woakes walks in now, at number 8, replacing Buttler.
42.5W
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. OUT! It is not a stumping but still a wicket. Buttler has edged it. Beautiful bowling from Sodhi again and he has three now. Full and outside off, Buttler tries to repeat the shot which fetched him a six earlier in the over, aiming to go inside out but this time he is a bit too far from the ball. He misses and his back leg is dragged out of the crease. Tom Latham collects and then whips off the bails, and then appeals. To the naked eye it looks like a stumping but replays show that his back foot is in. They check for the no ball which is fine as well. Buttler walks back shaking his head. It is not against the decision. Perhaps the shot he played. Snickometer detects a fat edge. Big wicket again.

40.3W
Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. OUT! Stokes holes out now! Smart bowling from Sodhi and he has his second. Stokes makes a trigger movement just before Sodhi releases the ball, moving to the leg side. The leggie sees that and fires it wide outside off. Stokes now has to reach out to go over the top and mistimes it towards long off where Colin Munro takes a good judgemental catch near the ropes. Cannot blame Stokes for going big but can be critical, given that he should have stayed till the end, now that Morgan is not there. Fighting innings comes to an end.

16.60
Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. Huge shout! Looks close but Sodhi does not think so. Full and outside off, Morgan comes forward to defend but misses and is hit on the pads. In my opinion, that could have been reviewed but my colleague Milind, who himself is a right-arm medium pacer, reckons that the impact was outside off. I dare not argue with him, considering that he competes well with the Hawk Eye, eyeing things like a hawk, but still, would like an official confirmation. Still waiting...

16.31
Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. Works this through the leg side for a run.
New Zealand coach Mike Hesson is on the sidelines. He says that the pitch looks spongy with a bit of extra bounce. Is not quite sure what a good total is on this surface. On Mark Chapman, Hesson is confident that the young lad has got a big role to play for New Zealand in the coming future. Reckons that it will be difficult for batsmen to play the new balls and wants his side to save boundaries.
16.24
Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. FOUR! Lucky. Full and on middle and leg, Morgan gets down and reverse sweeps it over short third man for a boundary.
16.11
Ish Sodhi to Jonny Bairstow. Full and outside off, driven through mid off for a single.
DRINKS are on the field. An absorbing hour of cricket. This pitch is certainly not the easiest to bat on and grafting is the way to go here. England have plenty of stroke-makers and they are finding it difficult to adjust. Credit to the batsmen for being patient so far but that is slowly dimishing, with plenty of shots being played in the latter half of that hour.
End of Over : 164 RunsENG: 62/2

Skipper Eoin Morgan walks in at number 4, replacing Root.
13.5W
Colin de Grandhomme to Joe Root. OUT! That is a good catch but was that shot necessary? Root stands there in despair. Being aggressive is fine but trying to be ultra-aggressive is just not Root's area. He has tried to do something out of the ordinary to lift the run-rate and in the process, gifted his wicket. A length ball, in line of the stumps, nothing dangerous, Root jumps down the track and tries to do something fancy. Aims to go over mid on but skews it off the inner half. There is just one fielder inside the circle on the leg side and it is Ish Sodhi at wide mid on. The ball travels quickly to him but the leggie reacts well, taking a decent catch. A meter either side of Sodhi and it would have been a boundary. But was that shot needed? A kind of cameo is not quite expected from Root.

12.54
Mitchell Santner to Joe Root. FOUR! He is a fabulous player, isn't he? Previous ball, on the off side, this one is played on the leg side. On middle and off, not all that short, but Root gets down on one knee and pull-sweeps it through square leg for a boundary. 50 UP FOR ENGLAND.

7.6W
Trent Boult to Jason Roy. OUT! There comes the first wicket and it is Boult who has struck. On a length, outside off, angling away, Roy feels for it but the extra bounce does him in. He cannot do anything, just fends at it loosely and gets a thick outside edge. The ball lobs to Martin Guptill at wide first slip who gets low to his right and cups it. Now Trent Boult is having a chat with Craig Cummins. The fast bowler looks confident ahead of this clash. Is enjoying his form at the moment, admitting being under the pump in the T20Is. Does not review himself too much, he says and smiles. Adds that he just looks to stick to the basics in every match and is enjoying his cricket at the moment. On performing when the ball is swinging, Boult says that as a fast bowler, the challenge is not to rely on the ball swinging and just bowl consistent line and length. States that on a given day, New Zealand are good enough to beat England. Further says that there are different challenges - different grounds, different pitches and different balls reacting differently to different surfaces. And of course, different oppositions as well.
Adil Rashid is having a chat with Nasser Hussain. Feels England played exceptionally well in the second ODI, restricting the Kiwis to 200-odd on a good pitch. On the fielding, he says that they were not doing anything special, just sticking to basics, practicing hard and improving their mindset. On his own mindset as a leggie, he says that his main aim is to pick wickets, nothing different from others. On smaller grounds in New Zealand, Rashid admits it is a challenge to bowl on such grounds and it comes down to mind games in the end.
PITCH REPORT - This is being done by Craig Cummins. He says that it is a hard pitch to define. There is a bit of dead grass right in the middle of the surface but nice and dry. Next to it, is a bit of a wet patch and going further aside, there is some nicely rolled grass. He adds, while the surface does not look great to look, it is great underneath.
England captain, Eoin Morgan, admits that this does not look like the prettiest of pitches to be coming across and would have chosen to bowl as well. Predominantly to make use of the pitch first up with the ball. Informs that Mark Wood comes in place of David Willey and they have gone for extra pace simply becaue there will be no sideways movement. Hopes that his side performs well tonight and goes 2-1 up.
New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson says that it looks an interesting surface and is pretty hard. Informs that he is playing an extra bowler in Ish Sodhi in place of Lockie Ferguson. On his own fitness, he says he is fine and feels nice to come back. Agrees that he is a straight swap for Ross Taylor who should be fit for the next game. Admits that New Zealand were not a 100 percent in the second ODI and looks for an improved performance tonight.
TOSS - Time for the spin of the coin now. Kane Williamson flips it, Heads is the call from Eoin Morgan, but it is tails. NEW ZEALAND OPT TO CHASE.
WEATHER - Rain and New Zealand are never far apart. However, as of now, bright, sunny and cloudless skies welcome us to the Westpac Stadium. Hopefully, we get a full game of cricket uninterrupted by rain.
If it was an abject England display in the first ODI, they roared back in the second to level the series 1-1. We now have a 3-match series and depending on which team shapes up better, that unit is poised to win the series. Who will it be? Hello and a warm welcome to the third ODI between New Zealand and England at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington.
End of Over : 50.0NZ: 230/8
Right then! What a finish. Congratulations to the winners, commiserations to the ones who could not win. Sometimes, it is better if such matches end in a tie so that both teams get a fair share of the result. Anyways, it is 2-1 in favour of England now and the first of two do-or-die games for New Zealand start in Dunedin. Do join us for the 4th ODI on Wednesday, 7th March, 2018, at 1100 local time (2200 GMT, previous day). We take your leave. You can enjoy some Test cricket between South Africa and Australia by browsing our tabs. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Victorious England skipper Eoin Morgan feels it was a brilliant game and thanks English supporters for coming out in large numbers. On the batting performance, he reckons it was hard to score and get going. But felt that some score around 250 would keep them in the game but even 235 felt competitive. Feels the run chase was like a cat and mouse with England starting well, then being pegged back, then again forcing a collapse, only to see a fightback before finally holding its nerves in the death. Praises Tom Curran and Chris Woakes for exhibiting their death over skills once again. On the confidence in the last over, Morgan says he was reasonably confident and remembers a T20I against India where his side defended 13 in the last over. (Nice memory).
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson admits that it is frustrating to hit a century and yet finish on the losing side. Credits England for batting well in the first place. On his own team's innings, he admits that the stumble in the middle overs cost them. Feels that it was a difficult pitch to bat on and score runs and praises his bowlers for doing a commendable job. Has lots of praise for the English spinners as they did not allow the Kiwi batsmen to play freely. On his scoring shots in the last over, Williamson says that one can have plenty of plans in the mind but the execution is what matters. Hopes to have Ross Taylor back in the next game.
Moeen Ali is the MAN OF THE MATCH. Says that it was a brilliant game, pretty tight but a fantastic last-over finish. On his batting, Moeen says that he took a couple of overs and then decided to have a hit. But feels that his team was a few runs light. On his bowling, he adds that the aim was to keep it tight and build pressure. As long as he goes under 4-5 an over, he is happy. Feels nice to bowl 10 overs, he says. On the pressure in the last 3 overs, Moeen says that it takes just one good over to change the game and Woakes and Curran were superb.
England were indifferent with the ball tonight. After getting the early wicket in Powerplay 1, their seamers lost their line and length and it was the spin twins of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid who brought them back in the game. The duo forged a collapse, with combined figures of 5/23 in 7 overs at one stage. Adil Rashid eventually had figures of 2/34 after his 10 while Moeen Ali picked up 3/36 in his 10. And do not forget the last few overs with the ball. With 36 runs needed from 28 balls, your money is usually on the batting side. But England's superb bowling pulled off a win. Stay tuned for the presentation...
Spare a thought for Kane Williamson. The only man to score a century. Forget triple figures, he was the only individual to cross 50. 3 of the top 4 scorers in the match were from New Zealand. Still, England won the game. Such is cricket.
The visitors knew they were a wicket away from getting right back in the contest and they did break the Williamson-Santner partnership, albeit in a lucky manner. Chris Woakes ran Mitchell Santner out at the non-striker's end via a straight drive from Kane Williamson and the game swung again. The home side could not quite get out the big hits on a sluggish surface and some excellent death-overs bowling saw them fall 4 runs short.
In-form all-rounder Mitchell Santner walked in at number 8 and gave solid support to his captain. The duo added 96 for the 7th wicket and with the runs needed less than 40, the pressure was back on England. But if they say fightback is a close friend of New Zealand, then do not give up hope is England's mantra.
Ben Stokes took a blinder to dismiss Colin Munro and the in the blink of an eye, the hosts slipped from 80/1 to 103/6. All of a sudden, England were all over New Zealand like a rash, with a chance of win now very remote for the home side. But fightback is something we always associate with New Zealand. And fightback is what the Black Caps did.
A topsy-turvy run chase. New Zealand lost Martin Guptill early, then recovered beautifully through the Munro-Williamson stand. The duo added 68 runs in 92 balls with the hosts well on path to reach home. But there was drama.
Second nail-biter in 3 ODIs. It was Mitchell Santner taking New Zealand home in the first ODI, tonight, it was the pair of Chris Woakes and Tom Curran to do it for their team. Kane Williamson nearly got his side over the line... but for a boundary...
49.60

7.64
Mark Wood to Kane Williamson. FOUR! 5000 ODI RUNS FOR KANE WILLIAMSON! Fastest to do so, in 119 innings. Fine way to get there. This is a similar ball to the previous boundary but this time, Williamson controls his cut shot really well. Ensures that he does not flash hard, but is on top of the bounce and gets it past Bairstow at gully and beats the man running to his right from third man. 12 from that over and New Zealand have some momentum.
7.52
Mark Wood to Kane Williamson. Controlled shot, gets on top of the bounce and punches it through point for a couple.
7.44
Mark Wood to Kane Williamson. FOUR! In the air and through! For a moment, Williamson would have had his heart in his mouth. A touch short outside off, but not that wide. 3.50
Mark Wood to Kane Williamson. The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
3.41
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. MORE LUCK! Munro is desperately trying to play an innings which has a life that of King Midas. Don't think there seems to be too much conviction though. A short ball, around leg, Colin looks to pull but is hurried into the shot. He gets a top edge which goes back. Three players run after it, the keeper, Jonny Bairstow from first slip and short fine leg. Bairstow gets the closest to the ball but after it lands. A run taken.
3.30
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. LBW SHOUT, TURNED DOWN, RUN OUT MISSED! Oh dear... nervous innings from Munro. This is full and fast, but pitched outside leg. Munro misses his flick and is hit on the pads. England go up in an appeal and while the umpire is steady in ruling it not out, Munro is in his own world, looking for a non-existent single. He is halfway down the track, before he finally looks up at Williamson who sends him back. Too late. Joe Root is onto the ball from second slip and has a shy at the striker's end. Munro is gone for all money but Root misses.
3.21
Mark Wood to Kane Williamson. Full and outside off, Kane pushes it towards the bowler who takes it lightly and allows it to go through. The striker immediately calls his partner through for a singe.
3.12
Mark Wood to Kane Williamson. Outside off, punched nicely through point who gets a hand to it and slows the pace down. By the time third man gets to the ball, two runs are taken. 218 more needed from 281 balls.

Captain Kane Williamson walks out at number 3, replacing Guptill. The game is right here for both sides. If this man stays long, the home side will breathe down the neck of Morgan. If he goes early, well, this match might be over early too...
2.1W
Chris Woakes to Martin Guptill. OUT! A nothing shot and Guptill is out of here. The aim to go hard in Powerplay 1 backfires for the home side. Even if that was the plan, this shot was nowhere in any part. Guptill just walks down the track and only chips it uppishly. Neither does he look to keep the ball down, nor does he look to go over the top. Simple catch to Tom Curran at mid on.
End of Over : 28 RunsNZ: 12/0
1.60
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. The batsman has attempted to put bat on ball - but fails. A slightly expensive over but a good one from Wood.
1.50
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. On a good length around off, defended solidly.
1.44
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. EDGED, FOUR MORE! Ahh... Wood is making things happen. He keeps slanting deliveries away from Munro and the left-hander keeps chasing them. This is a push away from the body and the result is an outside edge. Nearly goes to hand but drops short of second slip. Third man hares across to his right, gets to the ball but only parries it to the fence.
1.34
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. FOUR! That is a good shot. Fractionally overpitched outside off, Munro just eases this through the covers and finds the gap. Two fielders run after it but in vain. 227 more needed from 291 balls.

0.33
Chris Woakes to Martin Guptill. On middle, Martin swings this across the line and gets it over mid-wicket. Does not have enough on it to reach the ropes though. Tom Curran gets to the ball from mid-wicket, picks it up to throw but slips twice. That results in the third run.
0.20
Chris Woakes to Martin Guptill. Full on middle, pushed towards mid on.
0.10
Chris Woakes to Martin Guptill. NEARLY A WICKET! Ooff... what a start. Full and outside off, Guptill plays a loose off drive, which goes in the air and almost carries all the way to cover getting across to his right!
Nope, we don't go. Woakes loses his footing and eventually his runup. Does not release the ball.
The players are back onto the field. Colin Munro and Martin Guptill are the openers for the Kiwis. Chris Woakes will start off proceedings to Guptill. Here we go...
Welcome back for the run chase. It will be interesting to see New Zealand's approach to this target. It is not a big one but similar to the one in the 1990s where runs were difficult to come by and even 220 used to be tough. Do the Black Caps adopt the Mark Greatbatch approach and go hard against the new balls? Or do they keep wickets in hand and aim for 80 in the last 10? Either ways, this target is 50-50.
England vs New Zealand Highlights And Cricket Score 3rd Match - ODI Commentary
Trent Boult to Tom Curran. OUT! A run out to end the innings. Third one tonight. Full on middle, Curran swings it wide of long on and comes back for the second. Henry Nicholls attacks the ball and returns a good throw to Boult who takes the bails off. No chance for Wood to make it back in time. ENGLAND HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 234!

Trent Boult to Adil Rashid. OUT! BULL'S EYE! What an athlete, is Trent Boult. Superb bowler, magnificent fielder as well.
Trent Boult to Adil Rashid. FOUR! Fine start to the over! Full and outside off, Rashid backs away and steers this behind point for a boundary!
Tim Southee to Adil Rashid. The batsman drives this through the covers. One run added to the total. 7 runs and a run out from that over, Southee finishes with figures of 10-0-48-1.
Tim Southee to Adil Rashid. FOUR! That is a terrific shot. Full on middle, Rashid whips a la helicopter style, over square leg and gets a boundary.
Tom Curran walks in at number 10, replacing Moeen Ali.
Tim Southee to Adil Rashid. OUT! Moeen is run out. Another set batsman falls. Nothing Rashid could do over here.
Tim Southee to Moeen Ali. Played to the point region by the batsman. They pick up a single.
Tim Southee to Adil Rashid. Full and outside off, Adil drives it through the covers. He sets off for the second but is turned down at the right time. Good call because Rashid has to dive in at the bowler's end.

Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. FOUR! In the gap! Very useful runs for England and they are coming at a quick pace. A short ball, around off, Moeen looks to pull but is hurried into the shot. Chris Woakes walks in now, at number 8, replacing Buttler.
STUMPED? Definitely looks so. Has been referred upstairs...
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Outside off, punched straight to cover.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Good comeback from the bowler, lands it on middle, drags his length back a bit, Jos goes back but is cramped for room as he tries to work it to the leg side, Hits it back to the bowler.

Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. A short ball, dragged through square leg for a single.
Moeen Ali walks in next, at number 7, replacing Stokes.

Colin de Grandhomme to Eoin Morgan. WIDE. Full and down the leg side, Morgan misses his flick.
Skipper Eoin Morgan walks in at number 4, replacing Root.

Woakes stretches out to stop it but the ball hits his fingers and touches the stumps at the other end. Woakes is already celebrating while Santner is already walking. Both know what is the end result. It is still referred upstairs and replays confirm the worst fears for New Zealand and Santner. Forget the half century, is the win also gone for the Kiwis?
IS THAT OUT? Chris Woakes has claimed a run out at his end. It is referred upstairs but Santner is already walking...

DRINKS BREAK. Didn't think this match will come at a stage wherein we could say game on. England were all over New Zealand when the latter slipped from 80/1 to 103/6 but this 46-run stand between Williamson and Santner has eased some nerves in the Kiwi dressing room.
Mark Wood to Kane Williamson. Controlled shot, gets on top of the bounce and punches it through point for a couple.

Three players run after it, the keeper, Jonny Bairstow from first slip and short fine leg. Bairstow gets the closest to the ball but after it lands. A run taken.

Captain Kane Williamson walks out at number 3, replacing Guptill. The game is right here for both sides. If this man stays long, the home side will breathe down the neck of Morgan. If he goes early, well, this match might be over early too...
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. The batsman has attempted to put bat on ball - but fails. A slightly expensive over but a good one from Wood.
Mark Wood to Colin Munro. On a good length around off, defended solidly.
