Match Commentary
Should Santner have been the Man of the Match? Was Taylor the right candidate? Doesn't matter as much as the win does for them. A trailer of a film is just a highlight of what is to come. On similar lines if we may think, this game could just act as starters for the main course, i.e., the further games to follow. The teams continue their battle for one-upmanship in the second ODI on February 28, 2018. Mount Maunganui is the venue of that game and it starts at 1400 local time (0100 GMT). Hope to catch you for that one as well. Till then, take care! Adios!
Kane Williamson, the happy winning skipper, discounts the effect of dew as most of the game had been played before it set in. Credits Ross Taylor and Tom Latham for their stand. Admits to the surface being slow and it being difficult to start with the bat. States feeling nice to get across the line in such a pressure game. Is happy that the guys who had been assigned roles in his side came out well. About Tim Southee staying till the end, he says that his experience helped the side. Mentions about England being a good side in this format but his side defeating them being the most pleasing part tonight.
Eoin Morgan, the calm losing captain, reflects on the game and says that there wasn't much to choose between the sides and the end shows that. Credits the opposition for fighting back from 27-3. States that they felt they were in the game after that big breakthrough of Ross Taylor but then the total felt insufficient in the end. About his conversation with the bowlers, he asserts that they are experienced in their own way and he only had to know what they had in mind.
Ross Taylor has been adjudged the Player of the Match for his match-winning ton. He reckons that his stand with Tom Latham was outstanding and feels good as the others finished it off. Admits to be lucky to get a win after the collapse in the middle. Opines that the surface was a bit two-paced. They backed themselves to chase anything about 10 an over towards the end, he reveals.
England's bowlers didn't really bowl that bad. They were largely successful in keeping things under control. Perhaps, the 48th over of the innings, where Adil Rashid disappeared for 16 runs turned the tides. Before that Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes picked up a couple of wickets apiece to drive home the advantage. Tom Curran was also largely impressive, though the numbers don't do justice to his efforts. The tourists would be ruing the dropped chances that gave the batters extra lives. At this stage, it is worthy to remember that earlier, even the home side players dropped as many as 4 catches. Favours returned? Maybe. For now, here's the presentation...
But it was not to be. Mitchell Santner justified his 'all-rounder' tag by showcasing his finishing abilities with the bat. He was involved in an unbeaten 43-run stand off just 21 balls with Tim Southee that sealed the deal for them. He ensured that his returns of 54-2 with the ball earlier in the day and then his team mate Taylor's ton didn't go in vain.
The nucleus of this run chase for New Zealand HAS TO be the 178-run partnership between Ross Taylor and Tom Latham. It came at a time when the side seemed down and out at 27-3. Both of them rotated strike nicely as well as found the boundaries coming in at regular intervals. The former got to a well-compiled ton while the latter got a half. But the southpaw's dismissal seemed to trigger a mini-collapse, that threatened to undo all the hard work.
What a match! What a match! As good as it can get. Although it turned out to be a wonderful thrilling contest, for large parts of the game, it seemed as if both sides are looking to lose. In the end, the hosts opened their account of wins in the series.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Santner. SIX! Wallop! MITCHELL SANTNER HAS SEALED IT FOR THE HOSTS! We don't want no balls, says the man, we can get it done with the bat. Gets a full delivery in the slot and the destination of the ball is outside the Seddon Park. He clears his front leg and deposits this one way over the deep mid-wicket fence for a massive hit. KIWIS ROMP HOME BY 3 WICKETS WITH 4 BALLS TO SPARE!
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Santner. WIDE! Woakes is choking under pressure. Slower one outside off... WELL outside off. Santner goes for it as well but misses. Wide signaled.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Santner. FOUR! Bring back that four-letter word! LUCK! Woakes delivers a yorker on point, Santner gets his bat down in time. He gets it off the inner edge through his leg and past short fine leg for a boundary. 5 in 5 needed. Is that it, though?
A mini-conference is on. It involves Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. After some discussion, they hand the ball over to the first name on this list for the last over.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Back to the full and straight delivery. Santner smashes it to long off for one. 5 singles and a boundary off this over means that 9 RUNS ARE NEEDED OF THE FINAL OVER.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. FOUR! One bad ball in the over, is this the one that costs England? This is bowled full in length in line of the stumps. Santner gets down and swings wildly. Gets it off the inner half through backward square leg for a boundary. Another look showed that it was the back of the hand slower one. Also, CURRAN HAD OVERSTEPPED BUT IT IS OVERLOOKED! Hush, England have had their way with no balls tonight.
Tom Curran to Tim Southee. Full in length, hit straight to long on for one. 14 off 8 are the relevant numbers at this stage. Nasser Hussain reckons that Southee missed out going big here.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Another top delivery. A low full toss in an attempt to bowl the yorker. All Santner can do is squeeze it down to long on for one.
Tom Curran to Tim Southee. Southee looks to shuffle across before staying where he is. The English Tom bowls it full on off, the Kiwi Tom blasts it down to long on for one.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Full on the stumps, dug out over the bowler's head for one. 17 off 11 needed.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. Short again, pulled down to long on for one. 16 runs off the over, but only 4 off the last 4. 18 needed off the last two. Rashid is done for the night - 10-0-55-1. Though, he would rather be remembered for his 9th over.
Adil Rashid to Tim Southee. Tossed up outside off, punched to sweeper cover for one.
Adil Rashid to Tim Southee. Sensible. Floated on off, pushed back to the bowler.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. Quicker one on a length ball outside off, Jonny has a wild slash at that but misses.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Lovely work on the field. In line of the stumps, pushed down the track. De Grandhomme quickly gets to his left from mid on and puts in the dive to intercept it, but fails to prevent a single that helps Roy get off the mark.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Some action! Hurled in on a fuller length around middle and leg, Roy seems to have missed the flick and got it on the pads. This draws an appeal from Southee, to which KI here, replies saying, yes, that's out if the seventh stump would have been in place. On another look, it is seen that there was a thin inside edge.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Hurled on middle and leg, flicked to the man at mid-wicket for nothing.
Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. This is on the pads, flicked away towards mid-wicket for nothing.
Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. FOUR! Account opener! Not the right line and length after four good deliveries. This is bowled short in length around middle and leg, the pace reads just 130.8 kph. Bairstow goes back and pulls it through backward square leg for a boundary.
Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. Fuller this time, hit straight to the man at mid off.
Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. Lovely! Nasser Hussain states something on air, which I can't help but agree upon. He looks at this delivery, that is slanted away on a length around off. The natural angle takes it away from Bairstow who has a feel for it but misses. Seeing this the expert says that this is why teams yearn to have a left arm seamer in their ranks. Apt.
Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. Length ball angling away from Jonny, he stands back and has a waft at that one, only to miss edging the ball. Careful, boy!
Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. On the money! Boult steams in and spears a yorker on middle. Bairstow is alert to the occasion and digs it out.
On expected lines, Trent Boult will take the second new ball from the other end. Only one slip again, this time for Bairstow.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Angled in on a length, Roy clips it to mid-wicket. A maiden to begin for the hosts.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Again. The ball isn't really coming on to the bat nicely. Roy looks to play the drive down the ground but gets it off the inner half towards mid on.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Hurled around off and middle, pushed back towards the bowler.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Outside off, Jason punches it off the back foot straight to the man at point.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Fuller in length, just a hint of swing seen here. The line is around off and middle, Roy stands back and blocks.
Tim Southee to Jason Roy. Southee begins with a length delivery outside off, signs of the surface holding up are visible here. It doesn't come to the bat as quickly as Roy expects and he ends up chopping it to the off side.
The anthems are done and dusted. After a mini-huddle, the Kiwis jog out to the middle to take their positions on the field. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow make their way out with the bat. The former smashed a scintillating 180 at the MCG to begin the ODI series in Australia. His side would hope for another similar knock at the start of this tour. Tim Southee has the first new ball in hand. Just one slip in place.
The national anthems are underway now. The England's one is being played first followed by the home side's.
PITCH REPORT - Craig Cummins is out there observing the pitch. He states that the surface has been nicely watered. He reckons it to be slightly on the slower side due to its clayey nature. Adds that cutters would help the pacers out. The cooler climate will also aid the due factor to come up as the evening approaches. States that bowling full should help the bowlers early up, after adding that it isn't going to be easy batting. The areas around the good length should be exploited more by the bowlers, according to him. He also expects the odd ball to stop on the surface.
Eoin Morgan, the English captain, would have loved to chase as well. Adds that the dew in the evening is definitely a factor. Reveals that Ben Stokes is playing along with two spinners for them. Reckons that their success is owing to their deep batting order and adds that they have a method to their batting. States that they will look to go forward keeping in mind the ICC World Cup, 2019.
Kane Williamson, the Kiwi skipper, reckons chasing will be easier given the dew factor. Informs that they're playing an extra slow bowler. Opines that it is a fairly used surface and it should play well. Admits to playing two spinners, leaving out Lockie Ferguson. States that he doesn't want to read too much from the results in T20Is, as this is a different format altogether.
TOSS - Heads is the call, tails it is. NEW ZEALAND WILL CHASE IN THE FIRST GAME.
Ben Stokes has been the centre of attraction for England for sometime now. If he plays this one, this will be a welcome involvement for him, coming off from the off-field incident that kept him out of the game for a while now. Also, this will be a shot in the arm for the tourists, given the way they performed against Australia. The hosts, on the other hand, are going through a nice patch in ODIs and would look to extend their winning streak in the format. What will be the composition of the sides? What does the game have for us in offer? Here's the toss...
Hello! It's a Sunday and a pretty good time to kickoff England's stint in New Zealand in Oceania. We are glad to have you with us for our coverage of the first ODI, which will be played at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Two sides which are interesting to watch in ODIs lock horns and we are hopeful of having a wonderful game in our hands.

Adil Rashid to Tim Southee. Sensible. Floated on off, pushed back to the bowler.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. Quicker one on a shorter length, Santner is hurried on in his pull. Gets it through mid-wicket for one.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. WIDE! Pressure, pressure on Rashid and it's showing. He fires it well outside off, Mitch fails to reach it. The umpire stretches his arms.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. SIX! The delivery type is different but the result is the same. Rashid darts it in at over 114 kph. Santner has enough room to blast it over long on for another biggie. 12 off the first two balls already.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. SIX! Should Morgan have been greedy? Should Rashid have continued with this over after prising out Taylor in the previous over? All these can be answered at the end of the over. Santner sees the flighted ball and just thumps it over deep mid-wicket for a maximum.
Tom Curran to Tim Southee. FOUR! This boundary spoils the over. It is the back of the hand slower delivery on a fuller length outside off. It was well in Southee's arc. He got his front leg out of the way and slashes it over mid off. What could have been a three-run over turns out to be a 7-run one. 34 in 18 needed.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Flicked away nicely to deep square leg for one.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Length ball outside off, punched to covers.
Tom Curran to Tim Southee. That ball has taken the inside edge onto the pads. One run added to the total.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Similar shot, this time the single is taken.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. This ball is cut away straight to the man at covers.
Adil Rashid to Tim Southee. SAFE! This is tossed up outside off, Southee lunges to block but misses. Buttler fails to collect it and the ball falls down. He gathers it and disturbs the stumps and asks the question. Southee seems to have dragged his back foot in line although he seemed to have lifted it at some point. The TV umpire cannot be conclusive enough to rule it in the fielding side's favour and hence lets Southee bat on. If Jos had taken it in the first go, there would have been another wicket down. Three runs and a wicket in this one.
Is Southee a goner? There is a stumping appeal against him referred upstairs.
Tim Southee walks in next.
Adil Rashid to Ross Taylor. OUT! Big, big wicket! Adil Rashid, take a bow! Kudos to Morgan for his inspiring captaincy to give Rashid the 46th over of the innings. The leggie doles out a flighted leg spinning ball around off, drawing Taylor down the track. Like a child craves for toffees and gets attracted towards them, Rosco comes down the track and looks to hoick across the line but misses. Buttler does the rest. The veteran walks out after playing a vital knock. To be fair to him, he didn't have enough support from the other end and hence had to have a wild slog himself, in a bid to up the ante. That has brought his downfall now. Does this shut the gates on New Zealand's hopes?
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. Another googly around off, Mitch goes back and gets it off the top edge over the bowler's head for one.
Adil Rashid to Ross Taylor. Quicker one off the front of the hand outside off, Taylor drives it through covers for one.
Adil Rashid to Ross Taylor. Floated on middle and off, pushed back towards the bowler.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Santner. The googly on a shorter length, Santner goes back and slaps it over point for one.
5 overs, 44 required and guess who's into the attack. It's Adil Rashid. This is a big gamble from England.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. This is hit straight to point. But Roy has an unnecessary shy at the striker's end but misses. An overthrow conceded.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. SIX! What connection that is! Curran missed his attempted yorker and dishes out a full toss. Santner seems to have just timed his flick and yet the ball has enough to sail over the mid-wicket fence. This is just the second maximum of the innings, to go with one Munro hit in the second over.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Angling in on a length, Santner looks to go over mid-wicket but hits it on the man there on the bounce.
Tom Curran to Ross Taylor. Around off, Taylor pats it towards cover-point and gets to the other end.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Santner places this towards third man and gets to the other end.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. This ball is pushed off the back foot towards covers.

Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. Santner places this towards third man and gets to the other end.
Tom Curran to Mitchell Santner. This ball is pushed off the back foot towards covers.
Ben Stokes to Mitchell Santner. FOOTBALLER BEN STOKES MISSES! Santner taps this delivery in front of him and hares to the other end. The bowler himself goes to the ball and kicks it but misses the stumps by JUST. Taylor stretched to make it in and did. Another look showed that he would have just made it. 53 in 36 needed.
Ben Stokes to Mitchell Santner. Slower one on off, Santner checks his shot and pushes it towards covers.
Ben Stokes to Mitchell Santner. Outside off, driven to mid off.
Ben Stokes to Ross Taylor. This is worked to the on side for a single.
Ben Stokes to Ross Taylor. FOUR! That slipped. The dew is making it hard for the bowler. This is a waist high full toss outside off, Taylor looks to play it through covers. Gets a thick outside edge and the ball goes to the third man fence. He immediately looks at the square leg umpire but gets no signal from him. Adil Rashid to Ross Taylor. Tossed up on leg, Taylor lunges and works it through square leg for one.
Time for the last drinks break of the game. 113 needed off 16 overs. In this T20 day and age, this is very much possible. Only wickets can provide England a chance. However, the way they are putting efforts on the field, that seems the least likely thing to happen. Taylor and Latham have cashed in on every opportunity and have seized ones where they haven't been given the chance. Perhaps with the runs needed, both can aim for personal milestones - the coveted triple figure mark. Can they?

Chris Woakes to Ross Taylor. Fuller on off, Taylor bunts it next to the pitch on the off side.
Chris Woakes to Ross Taylor. NOT OUT! Review lost for England, wasted I would say. This is hurled on a length from outside off, the ball is angled in. Taylor misses the flick and wears it high on the pads. Woakes puts in an appeal before going to the ball that is rolling down to the on side. There is a mini-conference in the middle, involving who all, don't know and the next thing we see is a review. Don't think Woakes was too convinced as he seemed to suggest that height could be a factor. As it turns out, the Hawk Eye confirms the same.
Hello? We have a review for LBW against Taylor. Surprising, as Woakes the bowler didn't seem too convinced. Height could be a factor.
Chris Woakes is brought back on. 5-0-14-2 are his current numbers.

David Willey to Kane Williamson. OUT! Is that the game for England? Kane Williamson departs for yet another cheap score and boy o boy, the visitors are firmly on top. Willey is pumped up and he is finally rewarded for his efforts. The tight lines and lengths have forced Williamson into making a mistake. He looks to play the run-down-to-third-man shot for a single. It is one of his go-to shots. He does that even in Test match cricket, that too, with a slip cordon. Not many in world cricket get the ball down to third man as much as Kane Williamson but just as with high risk comes a great reward, it also results into one's downfall if the risk does not pay off. Here is yet another issue with the DRS. ENGLAND'S SCORE HAS BEEN REVISED TO 284, as opposed to the initial 285. Here is the reason. On the last ball of the first innings, David Willey was adjudged LBW and then when he took the review, Hot Spot detected a tiny edge and he was given not out and also awarded the run, given that the batsmen crossed. But then, according the rules, if an umpire has declared the batsman out, then no run will be awarded even if the decision is overturned. Well, not quite sure this should be the case. Somewhere, logic has to take place. Either award the runs to the batsman, or like they do in tennis, on an overturned call, replay the point. In this case, re-bowl that final ball.
Chris Woakes to Kane Williamson. Full and outside off, driven straight to cover.
David Willey to Martin Guptill. Full and wide outside off, Martin slashes but misses.
David Willey to Martin Guptill. EDGED, FOUR! Nearly a chance. Full and outside off, Guptill goes hard at the drive and only gets a thick outside edge. However, it flies through the vacant slip cordon and Jos Buttler cannot reach there with a dive. A boundary to third man.
David Willey to Martin Guptill. Around off and middle, watchfully defended.

David Willey to Martin Guptill. The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot.

Chris Woakes to Kane Williamson. Hurled on the pads, flicked straight to mid-wicket.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is out there with the bat, replacing Munro.
Chris Woakes to Colin Munro. OUT! Early wicket for the tourists! Munro, in a bid to be over aggressive, has to depart. Woakes dishes out a delivery angling away from Munro at around good length. Colin dances down the track with an aim to convert it into a full one and trash it over the off side. All he manages is a nick to Buttler behind, who gleefully accepts it. Elation in England's camp, disappointment on Munro's face. The hosts are still 279 runs away from the target. Also, this is Woakes' 100th ODI wicket. Nice, early strike to get to the milestone.
Chris Woakes to Colin Munro. Length ball angling away, pushed towards covers.
Chris Woakes to Colin Munro. SIX! Whooosh! Intentions clear from Munro. Gets a delivery on a length on the pads, he flicks it nonchalantly over deep mid-wicket for a maximum. What a way to get off the mark.

Chris Woakes to take the other new ball. Three slips in place for Munro, who will take strike.

It's good to have you back with us. 286 is the magic figure that the Men in Black will be after. In pursuit of that, Colin Munro and Martin Guptill walk out with the bat. The Englishmen have taken their spots on the field. David Willey will run in with the first new ball. Just a slip in place. Here we go...
England vs New Zealand Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - ODI Commentary
Tim Southee was excellent at the start and at the death while the others were not that consistent. Trent Boult and the two spinners managed to come back well towards the end. The pitch can only get slower as the game goes on but one thing which could come to New Zealand's aid is the dew. Or, the only thing. If there is no dew, then perhaps Buttler's innings might get its due. Join us back at 1815 local (0515 GMT) for the run chase.
Tough outing for New Zealand with the ball. They created opportunities, built up the pressure but could not make use of those. As many as 4 catches were put down and a run out was missed. While none of those catches cost the hosts much, it was that missed run out chance which hurt them more. Buttler was on 31 then.
Jos Buttler was excellent in his stroke-making. He had to change roles and he did so effortlessly. First, when he came out to bat, he tried to up the ante, considering that Root was anchoring the innings. Then, when the number 3 batsman got out, Buttler decided that he will get into that role of dropping anchor and allowed Moeen to play his shots. Eventually, when MO also got out, then he decided to play for time and take it till the last over. Nearly paid off but the Kiwis were superb at the death.
They do not say that the English side has a long batting line-up without a reason. Not known to hang back, the tourists launched into a counter-attack. First, a 47-run stand in 40 balls for the 6th wicket and then a 25-run one in 34 balls for the 7th. However, just when Jos Buttler was looking to tee off, the Black Caps came back superbly at the death and curtailed the run flow.
The very first ball indicated that the pitch is very, very slow. Boult got Bairstow early but then Roy and Root got into a decent stand. Santner broke it when the partnership was worth 79 and then the visitors lost some momentum, getting reduced to 139/4. The Black Caps then got the all-important wicket of Joe Root, who made a flawless 71 and at that stage, it seemed like 250 would be a good score for England.
A very good score on a sluggish surface. But just 68 runs were made in the last 10 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. So... both sides would be reasonably happy - England, for getting close to 300 while New Zealand for not letting them get to what is considered to be a par total on this surface by the on-air commentators - 300.
Tim Southee to David Willey. INSIDE EDGE SAVES WILLEY. It was a full ball, around off and Willey jammed it onto his pads and took a single to point before the finger went up. He reviewed it straightaway and Hot Spot showed the spot on the bat. ENGLAND FINISH ON 285/8!
David Willey is adjudged LBW! But he has taken the review.
Tom Curran walks out to bat but will not get to bat unless they run a bye on a wide.
Tim Southee to David Willey. OUT! Buttler is run out. Nothing Willey could have done about that. It was a yorker and he dug out back to the bowler. He got back in his crease but Buttler wanted a single. Willey thought about crossing his partner and sacrificing his wicket but there was hardly any time. Southee had to run just a couple of yards back and disturb the bails. End of a terrific knock from Buttler.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Looks to swing this one too but the ball goes through mid-wicket along the ground. Just a single.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. SIX! First of the over. A length ball, not advisable at this stage and Buttler deposits it over mid-wicket.
Tim Southee to David Willey. The batsman has driven it through mid on. One run added to the total.
Tim Southee to David Willey. FOUR! That helps! Full ball outside off, Willey looks to swing but gets a thick inside edge which scoots past the diving keeper to the fence behind!
6 legal balls left. 285? 290? Or more?
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. SIX! Buttler finally gets one in his zone. Swings the full ball miles over long on.
Trent Boult to David Willey. Excellent fielding in the deep. Willey lofts it over covers and gets it in the gap. Colin de Grandhomme gets to his right, dives and pushes it towards Tim Southee at sweeper cover. Three runs taken.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. On middle and leg, whipped through mid-wicket for a run.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. A terrific yorker, right on middle, dug back to the bowler. Buttler is getting frustrated.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. WIDE. A slower bouncer, which sails over Buttler's head, then bounces twice on its way to the keeper.
Trent Boult to David Willey. The batsman has driven it through mid on. They pick up a single.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. Full and around off, Buttler gets across and looks to play the paddle but misses and is hit on the body. The ball deflects away towards point and the batsmen take a single. Should be a leg bye but the umpire feels there is some wood involved. Credits Buttler with a run.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Full on off, pushed down to long on for one more. Just 6 runs from that over.
Tim Southee to David Willey. A yorker now, around off, dug out past the bowler for another single.
Tim Southee to David Willey. WIDE. Tough being a bowler. But rules are rules. Southee spots Willey walking across his stumps and promptly bowls it down the leg side. Willey misses and the umpire stretches his arms. From a humanitarian angle, that should not be a wide as the batsman went well across. But then, guess we can celebrate World Humanity Day some other day.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Full and outside off, pushed through the covers for one.
Tim Southee to David Willey. Outside off, squeezed behind point for a run.
Tim Southee to David Willey. Full and outside off, Willey reaches out to drive but misses.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Full on middle, chipped down to long on for a single.
David Willey walks in next, at number 9, replacing Woakes.
Trent Boult to Chris Woakes. OUT! Does not matter what the umpire said on the previous ball. Or does it? I think so it does. If the answer from the umpire was yes to Woakes' question on the previous ball, then Woakes was expecting a full ball on this one. And he gets a full ball. But what he does not expect is a change in pace. The ball is angled away, outside off and Woakes looks to play the cover drive. But he is early into the shot and the bat turns in his hands as well. Off goes the ball, back to Boult, courtesy the inner half of the bat and the bowler does well to take the catch this time. Terrific death bowling from New Zealand.
Trent Boult to Chris Woakes. FOUR! Nicely played. Boult dishes out another short ball and Woakes pulls it over square leg for a boundary. He immediately asks the umpire whether that is one bouncer for the over. Don't know what the umpire said.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. A short ball, on middle, pulled uppishly towards deep mid-wicket for a run.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. Full and wide outside off, JB plays a lovely-looking drive, with an open-bat face but straight to point.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. First funky shot from Buttler. Walks across and attempts the paddle but Boult is smarter, bowls a slower one, very full and the batsman misses.
Trent Boult to Chris Woakes. Length ball wide outside off, flayed through the covers for a single. The stand moves to 20 from 30 balls.
Trent Boult is back on as well.
Tim Southee to Chris Woakes. Played to the mid-wicket region by the batsman. One run added to the total. Just 5 from that over again.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Full and outside off, driven through the covers for a single.
Another field change. Third man comes up. Nasser Hussain feels that New Zealand are just bluffing Buttler, trying to see whether he reacts to the field placements by anticipating some length.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Superb. The best death bowlers are those who are unpredictable. Tim Southee slots right amongst the best in that list. Every ball there is a field change. One can never guess what the next one is going to be. He pushes the field back, probably signalling a short one. And then he delivers a yorker. Outside off. Buttler cannot dig it out.
Tim Southee to Chris Woakes. Full on middle, flicked through mid-wicket for a single.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Looks to work it to the leg side but the ball goes off the inner half through mid-wicket and the batsmen change ends.
Back goes Ish Sodhi, to third man and up comes fine leg.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Similar to the previous one, this time JB walks across and drives it straight to cover.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. WIDE. Not a great start. Southee anticipates Buttler moving across and bowls a slower one miles outside off. But Jos stays where he is and lets it go. Wide signalled.
Tim Southee is back on. Reverse swing on offer? Yorkers? Boundaries? Nice contest awaiting.
Mitchell Santner to Chris Woakes. Outside off, pushed towards point. Superb comeback from Santner. 10-0-54-2 for him.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. On middle, worked through mid-wicket for a run now.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. FOUR! TAKE THAT! Superbly placed. Sodhi goes wider outside off and Buttler just whips it past extra cover to the fence.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Slowly tossed up, around off, pushed towards the off side.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Full and straight, watchfully defended.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Outside off, pushed towards point for a single.
Ish Sodhi to Chris Woakes. The batsman was beaten and missed the line of the delivery.
Ish Sodhi to Chris Woakes. DROPPED! Number 4 today. Full and outside off, Woakes looked to play the slog sweep but was beaten by the away turn. Got a top edge which went miles in the air. Henry Nicholls did all the hard work, running to the ball from the deep from mid-wicket, got to the ball, had his hands underneath it but was never in control. Once he landed, so did the ball. A couple taken.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Goes wider, does Sodhi and Jos reaches out, driving the ball through the covers again for one.
Ish Sodhi to Chris Woakes. Full and outside off, driven through the covers for a run.
Ish Sodhi to Chris Woakes. A short ball, Woakes misses out, pulling it straight to short mid-wicket.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Full and wider outside off, Buttler reaches out and drives it wide of cover for a single.
Mitchell Santner to Chris Woakes. Oohhh... quicker one, on the stumps, pushed straight to backward point. Only 3 from that over.
Mitchell Santner to Chris Woakes. Full and down the leg side, flicked straight to Ish Sodhi at short fine leg.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. A touch short, Jos just works it with soft hands through the leg side wide of the bowler and scampers through for a run.
Mitchell Santner to Chris Woakes. On middle, pushed through mid on for a single to get off the mark.
Mitchell Santner to Chris Woakes. Full on middle, pushed to the leg side.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Full and around off, pushed through the covers for a single. 15TH ODI FIFTY for Jos Buttler and the first by an English batsman at number 6 in New Zealand, since 1988. Well, he stays there till over number 45 and then tees off... no score is predictable.
Ish Sodhi to Chris Woakes. The batsman was beaten and missed the line of the delivery. Just a single and a wicket from that over. Sodhi's figures now read 9-0-58-2.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. The batsman drives this through the covers for a single.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. The ball is too wide on the off side for the batsman to make any contact.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Outside off, spinning away, Buttler looks to push but misses.
Chris Woakes walks in at number 8, replacing Moeen.
Ish Sodhi to Moeen Ali. OUT! Well, the gamble from Williamson pays off as Moeen is walking off! Sodhi strikes immediately on return. Or... almost immediately. He kinds of senses that Mr. Ali is going to jump at him and hence throws this a bit wider. Ali indeed dances out and goes through with his shot. He is beaten on the ball type, as it is a googly. He is beaten on the reach as the ball is wide. He is beaten on the pace too as the ball comes on very slowly. But just as you cannot withdraw an arrow once it is released from the bow, you cannot reverse an action once it has been performed. Moeen is through with his shot and only skews a top edge. Martin Guptill is calm under it and cover and takes it near his chest. Moeen's cameo ends and New Zealand heave a sigh of relief. Entertaining stand of 47 from 40 balls is broken.
Ish Sodhi to Moeen Ali. Outside off, Moeen mistimes his cut to cover.
Interesting. Ish Sodhi coming back.
Mitchell Santner to Moeen Ali. On middle and leg, worked through mid-wicket for a single. 11 from that over too, 36 off the last 3!
Mitchell Santner to Moeen Ali. FOUR! Ahh.... this is a gift. Fine leg is inside but the line from Santner is leg and outside. The length is short and Moeen just pulls it through fine leg for consecutive boundaries.
Mitchell Santner to Moeen Ali. FOUR! SPANKED! Moeen is in some mood today. Especially on the shorter stuff. Pulls this one through mid-wicket and beats the man in the deep!
Mitchell Santner to Moeen Ali. Comes down the track but is not quite to the pitch of the ball and defends.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Pushes this through mid on and gets a run.
Mitchell Santner to Moeen Ali. Outside off, dabbed to short third man for a single.
Mitchell Santner to bowl the first of the 10 death overs.
Time for POWERPLAY 3. 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Stage is set for 300 at least. But then, a wicket quickly could change the scenario.
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. Played to the mid-wicket region by the batsman. 14 from the over, 25 from the last 2! Some way to enter into the hitting zone...
Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. FOUR! Third boundary of the over! Buttler gets into the act as well. Sees a short ball and pummels a pull through mid-wicket.
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. Another short ball, pulled through mid-wicket for a single.
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. FOUR! This is very straight and Ali hits it past Buttler down the ground for the second boundary of the over!
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. WIDE. Full and down the leg side, Moeen misses his flick.
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. Full and outside off, driven straight to cover.
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. FOUR! SMOKED! A short ball, outside off, Moeen just pulls it disdainfully past mid on for a boundary!
Joe Root is on the sidelines, giving an interview. He says that the pitch is on the slower side and credits the Kiwis for bowling well. Hopes that the pitch gives some turn to England when they bowl. States that it feels nice to be playing cricket after a break.
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. Full and outside off, Buttler is showing signs of opening up again, stays leg side of the ball and lofts it over mid off for a couple. 11 runs from the over, the visitors getting some momentum now.
Colin Munro to Moeen Ali. Oohhh... that nearly went through. Munro kept it straight and MA just went through with his pull. He missed and somehow, the ball went over the stumps. Tom Latham standing up could not collect cleanly and conceded a bye.
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. Full and outside off, flayed through the covers for a single. 200 UP FOR ENGLAND. A wicket or a partnership - the difference between a 300 and a 260 from here.
Colin Munro to Moeen Ali. The batsman has played it to the point region. They pick up a single.
Colin Munro to Moeen Ali. Landed outside off, Ali waits for the ball to come to him and guides it to short third man.
Colin Munro to Moeen Ali. SIX! How easy is it to hit a six in New Zealand? Very, by the looks of it. A length ball outside off, Moeen just goes through and lofts it over mid off. High and handsome over the long off fence goes the ball.
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. Outside off, pushed towards point for a run.
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. Full and outside off, driven straight to cover.
Trent Boult to Moeen Ali. On middle and leg, flicked straight to short mid-wicket.

Tim Southee to Moeen Ali. Outside off, fuller in length, Moeen looks to drive but misses.
Tim Southee to Moeen Ali. Punched off the back foot by the batsman.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads for a single.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. FOUR! Terrific timing. On a length outside off, Buttler just caresses it through the covers. He gets it through the infield and the outfield does the rest.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. The batsman defends it from within the crease.
Colin Munro to Moeen Ali. The batsman has played it to the point region. 2 runs and a wicket from that over, Munro's figures read 4-0-18-1.
Colin Munro to Moeen Ali. Full and outside off, driven straight to mid off.
Moeen Ali walks in at number 7, replacing Root.
Colin Munro to Joe Root. OUT! Ho ho ho! Cannot exactly call New Zealand generous but seems like both teams are in a race to be the next Santa Claus. The Kiwis have dropped 3 catches so far, with none of the batsmen going on to make it big. And this man, well, seems to have an enmity towards that three-figure score. His 6th 50-plus score in succession which has not been converted into a century. Munro keeps this straight and Root just plays all around it, looking to flick. He misses and the stumps are a mess. Can New Zealand now bowl England out?
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. DIRECT HIT WOULD HAVE HAD BUTTLER. One of those rare days where nothing is going right for acrobatic New Zealand. Here Guptill has done everything right. Or nearly. He watches the ball. Sees it make contact with Buttler's bat which is shaped to drive through covers. Martin anticipates. Knows the ball speed. Matches his dive with that and tries to stop the ball but makes a half-stop. Now, he has another challenge. The batsmen go for the single, on what they think is a misfield, taking his arm on. Guptill tries to bring the common saying to life - 'Never run on a misfield.' He tries to get up to fling a direct hit. But just cannot get the velocity and misses the stumps. Buttler was a goner.
Colin Munro to Joe Root. A short ball, on middle, pulled uppishly towards deep square leg. Lands wide of Trent Boult at deep mid-wicket running to his right. Just a single.
Colin Munro to Joe Root. The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
Tim Southee to Joe Root. It's been driven superbly through the covers. They pick up a single.
Tim Southee to Joe Root. IN THE AIR... DROPPED! Third one by New Zealand today. Not quite their fielding days. Full and outside off, Root plays an uppish drive, does not bother to keep it down and nearly pays the price. Mitchell Santner flies to his right at extra cover but cannot hang on.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Dropped short, pulled through mid-wicket for another single.
Tim Southee to Joe Root. On middle and leg, clipped through mid-wicket for one.
Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. On middle and leg, flicked away for a run.
Tim Southee to Joe Root. Full on middle, flicked through square leg for a single.
Tim Southee is back on.
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. Around off, solidly defended.
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. FOUR! That is a really poor ball, short and down the leg side, with the keeper up. Even if the keeper was behind he could have done nothing, apart from putting a despairing dive. Buttler pulled it away well wide from where originally the stumper would have stood.
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. Outside off, pushed towards cover. Buttler was to run but Root sends him back.
Colin Munro to Joe Root. Punches this down to long on for a single.
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. The batsman has punched that ball through the off side. One run added to the total.
Colin Munro to Jos Buttler. On middle and off, watchfully defended to the leg side.
Colin Munro gets a change of ends.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Gently works this through square leg and keeps the strike for the next over. Who is bowling? 20 from the Sodhi over. 8-0-57-1 so far.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Nope. Now comes the quicker delivery, Jos pushes but misses.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. SIX! Hat-trick! Buttler is in the mood. They say, you should never say no to party invitations. Sodhi continues to throw the ball up generously and Buttler who has been given the license to kill, does not hold back. Leans and smashes this even bigger than the previous two. Four in a row coming?
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. SIX! Half century for Sodhi! Ishhhhhh!!! Not quite his day so far but he has picked up a wicket. Similar ball to the previous one and Buttler gives it the exact treatment. Smashed over long on. What is next? A googly?
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. SIX! SMASH! There goes Buttler. He has come out with a mood to pound the ball. Sodhi helps him, tossing this right in his eyeline, around off, near the bat and boom. Deposits that, does Buttler, right over long on.
Ish Sodhi to Joe Root. Uncharacteristic. Full and outside off, Root mows the sweep, to deep mid-wicket for a single.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
Mitchell Santner to Joe Root. Outside off, punched away for a run.
Mitchell Santner to Joe Root. Full and outside off, watchfully defended.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Punched off the back foot by the batsman. They pick up a single.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. FOUR! Oh dear... early anticipation costs New Zealand a wicket. Full and outside off, Buttler goes for the reverse sweep. Seeing that, Ross Taylor at first slip makes a move to his right, looking for the catch. But to his dismay, Buttler does not connect it cleanly. It perhaps comes off his gloves and then his arm. Lobs to where Taylor would initially have been but now, it goes to the left where Rosco is now standing. Both keeper and fielder look at each other. The ball goes through to the third man fence.
Mitchell Santner to Joe Root. Arrowed in on off, pressed towards point for an easy single.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Full on middle, flicked straight to short mid-wicket. What an over. A single, followed by 5 dots. Brilliant.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. And again! Another short ball, cut straight to point once more.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Cannot get the ball away. Short and outside off, cut straight to point this time.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. A short ball, Jos looks to pull but ends up dragging it, playing it way too early and the result is a bottom edge back to the bowler.
Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler. Landed outside off, a touch short, Buttler goes back to cut but is beaten by the away turn.
Ish Sodhi to Joe Root. Down the leg side, clipped away for a single.
Spin from both ends. Ish Sodhi is back on.
Mitchell Santner to Jos Buttler. Played to the mid-wicket region by the batsman. Just 2 singles and a wicket from that over. Santner's spell reads 6-0-28-2.

Mitchell Santner to Joe Root. Around off, Root looks to defend but the ball goes off the toe end and nearly rolls back onto the stumps.
Jos Buttler walks in at number 6, replacing Stokes.
Mitchell Santner to Ben Stokes. OUT! The Big Ben is out of here! An inspirational bowling change and the left-arm spinner has got rid of the dangerous Stokes. Nothing special on the delivery, perhaps he just changed the pace a bit. Maybe a bit slow. Stokes was early into his slog sweep and also took his eyes off the ball. Did not bother to look where the ball was going after it hit the bat either. Because he knew. A top edge. Goes right over the top but when it completes a parabolic curve, Ross Taylor takes it at short third man. This partnership was looking threatening and Santner has nipped it in the bud. Not a great return with the bat for Stokes then.
Mitchell Santner to Joe Root. Full on middle, pushed towards long on for a single.
Mitchell Santner is back on.
Colin Munro to Joe Root. Another flick, this time it is a single.

Colin de Grandhomme to Ben Stokes. Full outside off, driven towards point.
Colin de Grandhomme to Joe Root. This is worked away off the pads for a single.
Colin de Grandhomme to Joe Root. FOUR! 27th ODI fifty for Joe Root! Boy, has he looked good! This is bowled on a length outside off, he hangs back and lets the ball come to him before opening the bat face to guide it to the third man fence.
Colin de Grandhomme to Ben Stokes. This ball is hit to long on for one.
Another change. Two Colins to bowl in tandem now, de Grandhomme is brought back.
Colin Munro to Ben Stokes. This one is flicked towards mid-wicket again. The fielder has a shy at the bowler's end. Unnecessary, as the man there was well in and the ball deflects off the stumps to the other side for a single. Munro isn't happy and vents his frustration out.
Colin Munro to Ben Stokes. Length ball angling in, punched off the back foot towards mid-wicket.
Colin Munro to Ben Stokes. This one is worked away with the angle to mid-wicket.

Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. Stokes slinks down only to defend this one.
Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. FOUR! Audacious! Ben sees the floated delivery around off and gets into position early to reverse sweep it. Makes good contact and gets it through backward point to fetch him his first boundary on comeback.
Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. Flatter on the stumps, defended from the crease.
Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. This is the googly, Ben prods forward and defends it towards covers.
Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
Ish Sodhi to Joe Root. Dropped on a shorter length, Joe pulls it to deep mid-wicket for one.
Trent Boult to Ben Stokes. CHANCE? Yes it is! Who's the beneficiary? BEN STOKES! Of all the men on earth, this is a guy you don't want to give a second chance. This is hurled full around off, Stokes pushes it back on the up. Boult dives forward to take that one but fails to hang onto that. Slaps the surface in anger but now that the moment is gone, he'd rather concentrate what to do next. How costly will this be?
Trent Boult to Ben Stokes. Length ball on off, Ben hangs back and defends this one.
Trent Boult to Joe Root. This one is punched through covers to get to the other end.

Ish Sodhi to Ben Stokes. Floated on middle, driven to long on to get off zero.
Ben Stokes is the next man walking in for England. Can he put all his off-field trouble behind and turn out to be the saviour for his side?
Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. OUT! Did I say get him going? Oh yes, he's going back to the pavilion now. Eoin Morgan. His troubles against the googly are pretty well documented and that's what has contrived here. If you see, there was a slip in place the moment he took strike against Sodhi, just to keep it on the back of his mind. This is a tossed up ball, Morgan looks to clip it away. But due to the one that goes the other way, the bat face turns in his hand and he ends up chipping it towards Southee at mid off. The pacer makes no mistake and now England seem to be losing momentum here. Can the Kiwis capitalise on this?
Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. SIX! Thank you, says Morgan! This is a half-tracker from Sodhi, Morgan is way too happy to go back and deposit this over the deep mid-wicket fence for a maximum. This should get him going.
Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. Flatter on the stumps, blocked off the back foot.
Ish Sodhi to Eoin Morgan. That's the googly. Morgan fails to pick it early and lunges to defend the spin. The ball goes the other way past the outside edge of his bat.
Mitchell Santner to Joe Root. Root defends this one towards mid off.

Ish Sodhi to Joe Root. Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
The English skipper, Eoin Morgan, walks in at number 4.
Mitchell Santner to Jason Roy. OUT! Gone! No fifty for Roy again. This is fired in a touch quicker on the stumps, Roy looked to go down the ground to get to a personal milestone. Ends up missing the ball and losing his leg stick. Back-to-back 49s for Roy. For a major part of this innings, he wasn't convincing enough. Nonetheless, the 79-run stand ends.
Mitchell Santner to Jason Roy. FOUR! Shot! Floated outside off, Roy gets to the pitch of the ball and blasts it through covers for a boundary. Power.

But Guptill gets across quickly from covers and dives, quickly throws the ball towards the keeper. Joe had to get back hurriedly. The ball goes off him towards short third man.
Drinks time, shouts the umpire! England have been steady after the early fall of Bairstow. The current partnership is worth 74 and it could have been culminated had Sodhi managed to hold onto the offering in the previous over. That apart, it has been a good knock by the two, particularly Root. Roy has looked edgy for a major part. New Zealand haven't bowled all that bad, but with not much assistance from the surface, they have looked a bit blunt.
Ish Sodhi to Jason Roy. SIX! Take that! 96 m biggie. Floated around off, Roy gets down on a knee and bashes it over long on for half a dozen. This is what happens when you give guys like him a life.
Ish Sodhi to Jason Roy. This one is cut away to point.
Ish Sodhi to Jason Roy. DROPPED! Tough chance, you have to admit. This is floated on a fuller length, Roy goes for the full-blooded drive. Ends up smashing right back to the bowler. Sodhi had his hands at the right spot yet the force on that shot made the ball pop out of them as soon as they went in. These are the ones that stick, actually. But to be very critical here, Sodhi's momentum doesn't take him to his left. Considering this, he should have taken this one for all money.
Ish Sodhi to Joe Root. Another quick run. Root pushes it towards covers and hares across for a quick run. Taylor gets there from point and hurls a wayward throw, that goes straight to mid on.
Ish Sodhi to Jason Roy. Roy places it towards cover-point and gets to the other end.
Ish Sodhi to Jason Roy. Another excellent save from Guptill. This time at covers. This is tossed up outside off, Roy goes with the spin towards covers. Guppy flings himself to his right and prevents a run. Either side of him and it would have been a boundary, reckon the on-air commentators.

Colin de Grandhomme to Jason Roy. That brings up the 50-run partnership between Roy and Root. They have consolidated well after the early fall of a wicket. On a slowish track, it is imperative for the set batters to carry on and they will know that. This time, Roy lofts this to sweeper cover to get off strike.

Ish Sodhi to Jason Roy. The wrong 'un now, Roy charges down but has to defend this one. Does so off the inner half towards square leg.
Ish Sodhi to Joe Root. Floated on off, driven nicely through covers for one.
Ish Sodhi to Joe Root. Some turn right away. Sodhi floats it around middle and leg, but the length is a bit shorter. Root has enough time to go back and punch it back to the bowler.
Another change. Ish Sodhi to have a go with the ball now. He came in the side on the back of his recent outings in T20Is, yet his skipper insists on not dwelling upon the results from the format to judge the way forward in ODIs. Irony.

Mitchell Santner to Jason Roy. Darted on off and middle, driven to mid on. 7 runs off the first spin over.
Mitchell Santner to Jason Roy. FOUR! Now, this is some good shot given the field placements. Yes it's Jason Roy. Tim hurls it on a length outside off, Roy has a slash at that. The ball is close to play that and he ends up getting a bottom edge. The ball, though, evades the diving wicketkeeper to his left and goes to the fence behind. Any other adamant ball would have made contact with the stumps behind.
Trent Boult to Jason Roy. Edge again. Safe though, as it goes well past the lone slip fielder and retains strike.
Trent Boult to Jason Roy. A bit more lift from the surface here. Roy looks to defend this length ball, but it climbs a bit more and he ends up doing so off the high part of the bat.

Trent Boult to Jonny Bairstow. OUT! This was always on the cards. An early wicket for the hosts, that should get their tails up. The natural left-arm pacer's angle has come to Trent's aid here. He delivers this around a good length. It is going away towards the keeper and Bairstow should have let it be. But instead he opts to go for the drive and gets a thick outside edge. The ball travels towards first slip where Taylor takes it by getting low to his right. Perhaps time away from the game has rendered Bairstow a tad rusty here.

Apt.
