Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - ODI Commentary
A target in excess of 300 is always tough to overhaul and with the pitch behaving on the slower side, it won't be easy for Bangladesh. They are also without Shakib and Liton, who were in good form of late, and will have to plan this chase really carefully. Lasith Malinga, in his last match, would definitely come hard at them and will unleash all his variations one last time. Promises to be an exciting run chase. Do join us in a short while.
The less said about Bangladesh the better. It seemed as if they were still tired from their World Cup campaign. Their bowling was not that good at the start and their fielding was lethargic too. At one stage it seemed that Sri Lanka would cross the 350-run mark but the Tigers managed to pull things back a bit in the latter part of the innings. The pick of the bowlers for them would be Shafiul Islam who was a tad bit expensive but did take 3 wickets. Once again Soumya Sarkar proved his worth with the ball, just like he did during the recently concluded World Cup, and bowled five tidy overs where he bagged the prized scalp of the centurion.
In spite of bowling well in the last 10 overs, it's a big target in front of Bangladesh. Initially, the Lankans did not get off to the best of starts as they lost Fernando early on. But then, Kusal Perera alongwith skipper Dimuth Karunaratne took charge of the innings. They made a 97-run stand for the 2nd wicket which laid the foundation for the batsmen coming in. Kusal Perera completed a 100-run stand with Kusal Mendis as well before departing for 111 off 99 balls. Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews also played good knocks of 43 and 48 runs respectively. Lasith Malinga also came out to bat to a loud cheer and a standing ovation in his final ODI.
69/4 in the last 10 overs and Bangladesh will be really happy with their work at the death. They bowled very accurately and didn't allow the Lankan batsmen to score freely.
A quick interview first up with Kusal Perera! Says that he opened the batting during the World Cup and today he batted at 3, as the situation was different. Adds that he backs his strength and that's why he is scoring runs. Mentions that during the practice sessions, it's always about hard work for him. Feels that they can defend this total and varying the pace will be the key on this slow surface. Tells that it's really hot and humid and he is feeling tired. Informs that he will be keeping in spite of that.
Shafiul Islam to Lasith Malinga. Malinga makes 6 and returns to the pavilion amidst a huge ovation as if he has scored a double century! He is loved so much in this part of the world. Islam angles in a length ball on middle, Malinga drags his shot off the inner half to wide long on and collects a couple of runs. Sri Lanka finish on 314/8!

Shafiul Islam to Dhananjaya de Silva. OUT! Another catch taken by Sabbir in the deep. Dhananjaya aims to go downtown this time. It's a length ball in the line of the stumps, de Silva gets behind it and launches it over mid on. But there isn't enough distance on this shot. The long on fielder doesn't move an inch. It falls straight down to his throat. Wicket number 8 goes down for Sri Lanka.
Shafiul Islam to Dhananjaya de Silva. FOUR! Brilliantly played! After the shot, Malinga is seen advising something to Dhananjaya. A low full toss on middle and leg, de Silva picks it off his pads and whips it fine down the leg side for a boundary.

But he fails to gather enough power behind his shot and Sabbir Rahman runs forward from the deep to take a fine low catch.
Mustafizur Rahman to Dhananjaya de Silva. A good looking shot but it will also fetch them only a run. Slightly short and on off, de Silva bends his back knee and rotates his wrists to turn it over mid-wicket. It goes on one bounce to the fielder in the deep and the batsmen take one.

He does not have enough strength on it and Soumya Sarkar runs to his left in the deep to complete the formalities. Thirimanne looks at the heavens and walks off but then he is asked to wait as the umpires suspect a possible overstepping. The replays are touch and go but eventually LT has to go. The 60-run stand is broken.

Back of a length delivery in the channel outside off, Mendis' feet are glued inside the crease as he throws his bat at it. The ball appears to have taken the faintest of edges on its way to the keeper who gathers the ball. No real appeal there as both the keeper and the bowler thought it missed the bat by a whisker. It's full and angling in on middle, Perera tries to swing it over mid-wicket but it takes the inner half of his blade and flies straight into the hands of Mustafizur Rahman at short fine leg. Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. We are here to cover the 1st match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The weather seems overcast and we can expect showers. However, the highlight of the day will be the farewell for the golden-haired pacer, Lasith Malinga who will be playing his last ODI match for his nation. Sri Lanka will be looking to give their hero a winning farewell and as for Bangladesh, they will be looking to take the lead in the 3-match series and stake a strong claim of winning their first ODI series on Sri Lankan soil. Bangladesh is led by stand-in skipper Tamim Iqbal as Mashrafe Murtaza is out injured with a calf strain. Another notable absentee for Bangladesh is probably the best all-rounder of the world, Shakib Al Hasan. Bangladesh will be hoping that their absence is not felt too much.
Okay! The Malinga chapter is done in ODIs but what about this series? It has just begun! Will Bangladesh be able to bounce back and level the series? Will Sri Lanka be able to move on from the Slinga absence? Only time will tell. Join us on Sunday, 28th July, 2019 at 2.30 pm local (0900 GMT) for all the action from the second ODI. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
The fireworks go off and 'Thank you, Mali!' signboards go up in the stands. Boy, he will be missed. Those yorkers. Fast and furious. Then some with terrific change in pace, taking ever so long to come. But deadly accurate. Thank you, Lasith Malinga, for teaching us that it is not always archers who can be accurate. Thank you, for teaching us that it is not only bowlers with conventional action who can survive in this sport. A terrific competitor, but a humble human being. Wishing you a great future in whatever you do next, though there is plenty of T20 cricket still to come.
A long, emotional speech comes to an end at last. Another presentation. This time from Malinga, as he gives a token of appreciation to former Lankan fast bowling coach, Champaka Ramanayake. A wonderful gesture.
Lasith Malinga is now given a special token, with his family being invited as well. Time for the farewell speech. He chooses to do so in Sinhalese and the crowd goes wild.
Victorious Sri Lankan captain, Dimuth Karunaratne, says that all the team members supported him throughout the World Cup. Reckons that the Lankans were on the right path even during the mega tournament but they just needed some time to enhance. Believes that tournament opened up their plans to bat well consistently and that was witnessed in this game. On Malinga's final game, Karunaratne says that he egged his boys on to give their 200 percent for the legend. Admits that the Lankans need to find a couple of bowlers as Malinga's replacement but is happy with the performance of Lahiru Kumara. On the legend finally, Dimuth says that Malinga has been a great servant of Sri Lankan cricket, always stepping up when the captain needed him to and says that he will be missed, though he will be around in the T20Is.
Bangladesh captain, Tamim Iqbal, manages to put in a smile. Admits that he has been struggling with the bat over the last few weeks and needs to start performing. Praises his bowlers for coming back strongly towards the end as at one stage, they looked to be chasing 350. But is disappointed over the no-show with the bat. On missing the injured key players, Tamim says that he is happy with the squad of 15 that he has and it is just a matter of realizing one's role. Feels that there are still two more matches to go and if he starts scoring and everyone else chips in, things will change.
KUSAL PERERA HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH for his spectacular 111. First, he is asked as to how is he feeling since he did not take part in the second innings. Kusal says that it was a slight back niggle and he is feeling better now. On his batting innings, Perera says that the number 3 role suits him more and he played his shots, taking a calculated risk every now and then as Bangladesh were bowling well. On Lasith Malinga, Perera says that he is a legend, always helping and advising youngsters.
Take aside Lasith Malinga, there were quite a few positives for Sri Lanka in this game. But they need more of these and with some consistency. Where were these during the World Cup? Do they have the batsmen to step up when needed? Do they have seamers in store for the future? Sunday and Wednesday will give us a better indication. Time for the presentation...
'Mali! Mali! Mali!' were the chants continuously as soon as the Lankans took the field in the second innings. And he did not disappoint. He knocked Tamim Iqbal's timber over and then had Soumya Sarkar dismissed in identical fashion. At 39/4, the game looked done and dusted and the 111-run stand between Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman just delayed the inevitable. Nuwan Pradeep did a decent job with 3 scalps and fittingly in the end, it was Slinga who closed the game, with his third scalp.
Coming to the game, it was totally Sri Lanka. They put their best foot forward by winning the toss and though they lost Avishka Fernando early, Kusal Perera and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne took the game away with a 97-run stand.
