Around 28 overs left in the day. Can Bangladesh make any impression with the ball? How much can New Zealand score? At least a 100, one would imagine. Their reply is on the way...

Poor start from New Zealand, especially after electing to field. They sprayed the ball all over the pitch and Tamim took full toll. However, after Lunch, they quickly adjusted their lengths and were rewarded. From 121/1, the visitors have collapsed to 234. Neil Wagner took 5 wickets, meaning he now has 9 scalps in his last 2 innings, after taking a 4-fer against Sri Lanka in Christchurch. Southee, after enduring a torrid morning, finished with a 3-fer.

Remember the story of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and the 2000s? Asian team touring overseas, getting peppered with short stuff and surrendering meekly. Something similar has happened here. Bangladesh have shown no determination and lost 8 out of the 10 wickets to short stuff. No resistance to temptation in playing a pull shot and no control in any of the pull or hook shots played. Really sad, given that they have improved so well over the last few months.

That did not take long, did it? Just 4 overs to be precise, to take the remaining 3 wickets. New Zealand have just gotten all over Bangladesh like a rash. Save aside Tamim's 126, there is nothing much to write about the batting.

The Asian tigers have not quite been able to curb their instincts and had it not been for Tamim's heroic knock, New Zealand would have been batting by now. None of them were able to curtail their shots and all the dismissals in the second session have been to short stuff. Wagner, not surprisingly, has taken 4 of the tourists' scalps and is looking good for a 5-fer.

New Zealand's session. 5 wickets picked up in 27.2 overs for the cost of 95 runs. It has been an incredible couple of sessions of Test cricket with the opening belonging to the visiting side through some superlative batting while the second saw the home side 'bounce' back.

It was almost normal batting from the Kiwis, with nothing happening in the wicket. Neil Wagner, the night watchman, entertained in his cameo of 47 from 35 balls, in a stand of 60 with his skipper while Watling just added to the misery of Bangladesh. Kane Williamson, in the meanwhile, has continued in his own merry way, reaching his century, going past 150 and now, looking good for a double ton.

That wicket before Lunch might brings smiles on the faces of Bangladesh but this match has galloped away from them at sheer pace. 154 runs have been conceded in this session, in 29.5 overs, for the wickets of Wagner and Watling. Very rarely do you see triple figures three times in a scorecard, let alone in the first three batsmen. After tons by Latham and Raval, captain Kane is now on track for his 20th Test ton. Neil Wagner is in as a night watchman but the pitch has nothing in it, so expect him to hang around for a while.

A day of records. That is what we witnessed on a drubbing Friday. Why drubbing? Because that is how Bangladesh would have felt. When a 254-run opening stand takes place, you seldom feel like even fighting back. The visitors got flat and the hosts took full toll. With the lead reading 217, the Kiwis might just be comfortable with another 100 runs on the board but given that there is so much of time left in the game, do not be surprised if they continue to bat through the day. Earlier in the day, the Kiwi openers added 254, both getting to their tons. Williamson then joined Latham and the two added yet another vital stand before Tom and Taylor fell in quick succession. Bangladesh did get a sniff at that moment but Williamson's and Nicholls' 100-run stand has seen them end the day in the driver's seat.

Bangladesh though will argue they had a decent last session and if you compare it with the two sessions before this one, you will have to agree. They started the final session by taking Taylor and Latham quickly. Williamson and Henry though then stitched another handy stand, taking the lead in excess of 200. Both of them got to their respective fifties before a lapse in concentration led to the downfall of the left-hander. Wagner however, ensured that he along with his skipper, played out the remaining overs and ended Day 2 without losing any more wickets.

An outstanding day of cricket for the Kiwis comes to an end. One can probably say they have batted the visitors out of the game. They have stretched their lead to 217 and are yet not done. They still have six wickets in the bag and whole lot of time left.

In response, Styris says that he has been told that in modern age cricket, the umpires actually check every 8 overs as to how the over rate is. Bangladesh on the other hand, have either been too straight or too predictable. The bowlers who started off today were guilty of bowling a little too straight and hence, leaked runs. Ebadot Hossain was decent but then became too predictable with his short balls. Mehidy Hasan bowled two before the break but the batsmen seemed comfortable against him too. The deficit is only 37 and Bangladesh need quick wickets to get back into this one or New Zealand will probably take a huge lead here. Join us for the second session in a while.

Another session which has belonged to the hosts. They now are in a very commanding position in this game. They have managed to add 111 runs in this session without losing a wicket. The two batsmen have looked at ease with Raval getting to his maiden Test ton and Latham nearing one. New Zealand will hope the two can continue for as long as possible.

Neil Wagner who is giving an interview says, he is very happy with his effort yesterday. Mentions it is good to work with the bowling coach, he has improved on his seam position which has allowed him to swing the ball upfront. Further adds they have the best swing bowlers going around so he wants to bring something a little different. He reckons his strength his to bowl long and fast spells and he hopes he can continue to do so.

PITCH REPORT - Craig Cummins observing the pitch says that a few cracks have already started to appear on the surface with the grass beginning to break up. In the middle of the track, he adds that the indentations are pretty big which could induce variable bounce. On the whole, Cummins feels that the surface is still good to bat on but batting will get tougher as the game progresses.

Hello and welcome to Day 2 and what probably is a very important day in this Test match. The game is now more in the favour of the hosts, however, a few quick wickets can see that change. It looks like a really long day for Bangladesh on the field on Day 2 if things continue the way they are going. The pitch does not seem to have anything in it for the bowlers. The two openers look set and primed to go on for three figures each. Not to mention the batting that follows. The visitors can do nothing but just head back, get a good night's rest and try and come energized in the morning. They will hope for a few early wickets on the second day. The things did not exactly go the same way all day as the morning session was amazing for the away team. After being put into bat, Bangladesh scored more than hundred runs in the first session losing only two wickets. Tamim Iqbal was in his elements as he carted the bowlers around at will for boundaries. He eventually got to a century in the second session but then threw it away soon after and that saw a collapse. The barrage of short balls from Wagner and co. could not be handled by the other batsmen as they failed to defend, leave or attack those properly. The wickets fell in heaps and an innings that looked on course for 300-plus ended up at a sorry 234.

A brilliant day of cricket here if you are a Kiwi fan. What started off as a not so good day, finished in with the hosts well on top in this Test as it stands. A terrific reply from the New Zealand openers in response to the 234 posted by the visitors. They have reduced the deficit to 148 runs and all 10 wickets are still intact. Jeet Raval has been the more aggressive of the two openers and helped himself to a half-century. As for his partner, Latham has looked solid as well and ground out the Bangladeshi bowlers in the 28 overs they bowled so far.
