The heat is on Afghanistan. First, their aim will be to score 275 to make India bat again and drag this game into Day 5. But they need to target small pockets - Drinks after Lunch, then till Tea and so on. The task of batting till Stumps today itself is a big one - but if they do achieve that and manage to bat for a good portion of the first session tomorrow, it will be a good fightback. One has got to feel for the Afghanistan bowlers. Pressure got to them. But they managed to stave off some of that. They bounced back from India being 280/1 at one stage to have them reeling at Stumps last evening, only to let them run away for a sprint this morning. Yamin Ahmadzai was the pick of the bowlers. He bowled with intent and ended up with a 3-fer but the others, including Rashid, were ordinary. The spinners did pose some threat last evening but that was it. Nothing in the other 3 sessions overall.

A decent total posted by India but as has been the everlasting concern, it has been built on the foundation laid by the top three. The middle order has not contributed much, which could be worrying against better oppositions. Save aside Hardik Pandya's knock, there was nothing much to write about once Rahul was dismissed.

The visitors managed to get rid of Ashwin fairly early this morning but then the last 3 wickets added 105. Hardik Pandya scored the bulk of those, as expected, carting the bowling to all parts. He made a quickfire 71 from 94 balls but then what hurt Afghanistan even more was Umesh Yadav's cameo of an unbeaten 26 from 21 balls, with 2 fours and 2 sixes.

Hard to be harsh on Afghanistan but a bizarre performance this morning. Asghar Stanikzai chose NOT to take the second new ball and as a result, he has allowed India possibly struggling to reach 400 at one point of time, to end up getting almost 500.

Sloppy fielding, poor bowling and two good deliveries which could have had wickets but for a dropped catch.

So you see - a simple fielding effort could have saved us so much trouble of typing.

Murali Vijay is giving an interview to Simon Doull. The opener says he was mentally prepared for the game. Adds further that he tried to stick to his basics, spend more time in the middle and it went well for him. On Afghanistan's bowling, Vijay feels that they were bowling better to the right-handers and hence he took his time. He mentions he is generally not nervous when he is in the 90s and tries to enjoy the moment. Reckons that once the ball got older it started to turn a lot more and ends by saying he feels good after the ton he scored.

A hard-fought day it was. Afghanistan started cautiously, only to be thwarted into submission by a rampant Shikhar Dhawan. It looked like all India around Tea when the skies changed their mood and accordingly, fortunes changed. 347/6 looks a very good total by the batting side on Day 1 of a Test - but to recover from a mauling of 280/1 will give a huge boost to the fielding side. Shikhar Dhawan is having a chat with Simon Doull. The Indian opener says that it feels great to score a century in one session and did not know that he was the first Indian to score a century on Day 1 of a Test before Lunch. On being asked further, he smiles and says that when one can score a century in T20 cricket, why not in one session? Being a bit more serious, he says that he first focussed on the singles and twos and when he got in, started to play his shots. Further says that the main aim for him was to test his fitness. On his dismissal, he says that is not that disappointed as he reckons that it is better getting out playing a shot rather than off a defensive one. On the game situation, he says that 400 will be a very good score on this wicket and India will aim to reach that mark tomorrow and then pick up some wickets of the opposition.

From a position of dominance at 280/1, India slipped to 334/6 and the Afghans had come roaring back. Yamin Ahmadzai picked up 2 wickets overall but it was the spin of Rashid and Mujeeb which was causing problems for the Indian batters. After hammering the spinners for a major part of the day, they struggled to pick them in the final session. The rain certainly helped the Afghans more than the Indians.

The first half entirely belonged to India. Dhawan attacked the bowlers mercilessly and was assisted well by Murali Vijay. The duo scored centuries which was followed by a half century from Lokesh Rahul. But, then came the rain which proved to be of gain for the Afghans.

A poor start but a magnificent finish. Nerves might have got the better of the debutants for most of the day but while heading back to the dressing room, it will be the Afghans who will be smiling a bit more than the Indians. Kudos to their effort and spirit, especially in this final session.

The throw is a weak one from Jamal and it goes on the bounce as he is off balance. But replays show that when Afsar Zazai breaks the stumps, Karthik's bat is in the crease but not grounded! The reason for that is that when the bat first made contact with the ground outside the crease, the force and impact made it pop up. That is a real sad piece of luck for Karthik on return. Afghanistan have 6 wickets in one day and we have another 10 minutes to go!

1443 Local time - The groundsmen have done their job and now we are only 7 minutes from play to resume. The last session can go onto 1730 and we have close to 45 overs to go today.

1436 Local time - Good news folks! The covers and ff and it also seems brighter now. Also the drainage here is really good so if the rain stays away then the action should resume shortly.

1400 Local time - While it rains the umpires have decided to take TEA EARLY! Another session which has belonged to the Indians. They did lose Dhawan early to Yamin but then Lokesh Rahul along with Murali Vijay have stitched another 50-run stand of this innings. The former is nearing his half ton while the latter is just 6 short of his century. 90 runs have been added in this session and just like the first one it has come at a good pace. If play resumes after the break, wickets is the call for the hour for the visitors. Whereas, the home side will want to continue from where they left off.

Scratch what I wrote last. The rain has once again started to pour down. More covers have been brought in. This does not look promising. Not sure the inspection will take place if the weather remains the same.

The rain seems to have stopped but it is still overcast. Also the outfield is still wet and the covers are still out. The next inspection will take place at 1400 local time.

All of a sudden the rain has come down quite heavily! The umpires have called for the covers and the players make their way back to the pavilion. Let us hope we are not in for a long delay here and it is just a passing shower. There are chances of the umpires taking early tea.

The ball takes the outside edge and flies towards second slip. The fielder, Rahmat Shah, there, fails to hang on and the ball lobs up towards first slip. Nabi there shows great awareness and takes it easily. The visitors celebrate as they have the centurion. He does not add a lot to his tally after the break. The away side will now look to build on this.

... Day 1, Session 2 ...

Not a lot to write about the Afghan bowling. Wafadar was the most impressive as he troubled the batsman with the new ball but the spinners were all over the place. A lot was expected from Rashid, Mujeeb and Nabi but the three were guilty of either pitching it too short or bowling too full. The visitors now have to re-think their strategy and come back rejuvenated after the break or a resurgent Dhawan will probably take the game away from them. Will the carnage continue or will the away side's bowlers come to the fore? Join us in a while to find out.

What a session for India and Dhawan. He walks off to a standing ovation from the crowd. Stroke-making at its best. The two openers have justified Ajinkya Rahane's decision to bat first. They looked shaky at the start when the ball was doing a bit but once the ball stopped moving, it was a combination of both, poor bowling as well as excellent batting. No bowler was spared as Dhawan hit them all over the park. Yes, they did miss a review against him but take nothing away from the knock he has played. Also credit to Murali Vijay who has given him excellent support from the other end.
