Sachin Tendulkar Scored His First Test Century on This Day in 1990, Watch Video

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is the only batsman in cricket’s history to register 100 centuries. Besides it, the “Master Blaster” holds a plethora of records. Before retiring from cricket in 2013, Tendulkar scored 51 centuries in Tests and 49 in ODIs. Tendulkar made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 and in 1990 during the tour of England, the then 17-year-old Tendulkar scored his first test century. It was exactly 28 years ago, on this day, Tendulkar registered his maiden ton in Test cricket against England at Old Trafford. England, batting first, posted 519 in their first innings. India, in response, scored 432 with captain Mohammed Azharuddin scoring 179. Tendulkar, batting at six, also made a valuable contribution of 68 runs. After securing the lead of 87 runs, England declared their second innings at 320 for 4, setting India a target of 408 runs.

India’s chase got off to a poor start after losing both the openers for just 35 runs. Sanjay Manjrekar and Dilip Vengsarkar then helped India rebuild but both were dismissed in quick succession along with skipper Azharuddin. After Tendulkar’s arrival, India lost the wicket of Kapil Dev. But the youngster held around with Manoj Prabhakar, who scored a half-century, to take India to safety at 343 for 6 before the close of play on the final day. Tendulkar, who scored 119 off 189 balls, also became the third youngest player to score a Test hundred. He was 17 years and 112 days old at that time.
