Rohit Sharma overtook compatriot Virat Kohli to become the highest run-scorer in T20I cricket. The Indian opening batsman reached his milestone in style by smashing two fours in the space of four deliveries in the opening over of the game. The 32-year-old, who started the match just seven runs behind Virat Kohli, smashed a boundary in the very first delivery to remain just four shy of achieving the feat before completing the milestone with another four in the fourth delivery he faced. India were asked to bat first after Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and opted to bowl. But his decision proved to be otherwise as Rohit began in his smashing style. Rohit first hit Shafiul Islam for a boundary through short fine leg without even moving his legs to give India a great start before stealing a quick single in the next delivery to go just three runs short of overtaking Kohli. In the next delivery he faced, the hitman failed to find the bat before punching another length delivery from Shafiul through the extra cover to complete his feat and reach the top of Twenty20 run-scoring charts. Earlier Rohit surpassed MS Dhoni to become the most capped T20I player for India. Rohit, who is leading India in the three-match Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh in the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli, has now played 99 T20I matches and Indian record. While he leads the Indian chart for most T20I appearances, the 32-year-old is behind Pakistan duo Shoaib Malik (111) and Shahid Afridi (99). The right-handed opening batsman has now scored 2452 runs with the help of four centuries and 17 fifties.
Meanwhile, Kohli, who Rohit overtook, is second in the list of highest T20I run-scorers with 2450 runs in 72 matches. Unlike Rohit, Kohli is yet to score his first Twenty20 hundred but has amassed a record 22 half-centuries.
