On day three of the third Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Australian captain and wicketkeeper Tim Paine sledged Rishabh Pant and reminded him that he was dropped from the One-Day International (ODI) squad. On day four, Pant had his opportunity to sledge the Australian skipper and he did not waste it. This time Pant was behind the stumps and Paine was at the receiving end while batting. The Indian wicketkeeper started with calling Paine as "temporary captain" when the Australian was facing Ravindra Jadeja. Pant also said that Paine only knows how to talk. “We have got a special guest here. Have you heard the word temporary captain ever. You [Jadeja] don't need anything to get him out. Come on lads,” Pant was heard saying.
“He loves to talk, that's the only thing he can do. Only talking talking,” Pant said while continuing his sledging stint. Interestingly, after the over, Pant was summoned by the on-field umpire and it is not clear what Pant was told.
Paine came out to bat at the fall of Mitchell Marsh’s wicket. Marsh was caught at the cover by Virat Kohli off Jadeja as Australia lost half of their side. The hosts are chasing a daunting target of 399 runs and at tea on day four were 138/5. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja picked two wickets each while Mohammed Shami chipped in with a wicket to leave Australia reeling once again.
