Spinner Rashid Khan was named as Afghanistan’s captain after Asghar Stanikzai was diagnosed with Appendicitis, which will require him to undergo a surgery. Stanikzai will take around ten days to recover and in his absence, Rashid will lead the side in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018.
Afghanistan captain, Asghar Stanikzai, has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will shortly undergo a surgery in a local hospital in Zimbabwe. The doctors have advised that he will be able to return to cricket in approximately 10 days. Current vice-captain Rashid Khan will lead the team in his absence,” said Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in a statement.
With it, Rashid is set to become the youngest captain across formats in international cricket. Afghanistan takes on Scotland on March 04 in Bulawayo and he will be 19 years and 165 days old on that day, thus making him the youngest captain ever in international cricket.
Currently, Bangladesh’s Rajin Saleh holds the record of being the youngest captain ever in international cricket. Rajin was handed the responsibility when he was 20 years and 297 days old. Rashid, who made his ODI debut for Afghanistan at the age of 17 years, recently became the youngest player to be ranked number one across formats. Rashid, at 7092 days old (19 years and 153 days), bettered Saqlain Mushtaq's record of 7683 days old (22 years), a 20-year-old record, when he was ranked joint-first with India’s Jasprit Bumrah in ODIs.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan will take part in the ICC World Cup Qualifier 2018, which starts from March 04. Afghanistan team and are placed in Group B alongside Zimbabwe, Scotland, Hong Kong and Nepal. The finalists from the ten-team tournament, which also features West Indies, will qualify for the World Cup in 2019 to be held in England.
