Quinton de Kock showed a brilliant presence of mind to run-out Marcus Stoinis during the Australia South Africa game at Old Trafford in Manchester on June 6 (Saturday). Stoinis, who took some time to settle down, looked dangerous having already smashed four boundaries before he was removed owing to a brilliant piece of fielding from Proteas wicket-keeper De Kock. The run-out from de Kock was from the MS Dhoni school of wicket-keeping in many ways. Mitchell Starc Equals Glenn McGrath’s Record of Bowler With Most Wickets in a Single Edition of World Cup.
Chasing 326, Australia were in a spot of bother after losing two early wickets and also having in-form batsman Usman Khawaja retire-hurt due to a hamstring pull. Stoinis joined Warner in the crease after the dismissal of Steve Smith and the two were looking to increase the run-tempo. But Stoinis found it difficult to get going and consumed too many deliveries before hitting four boundaries. In their attempt to increase the run-flow both Warner and Stoinis looked to steal quick singles and twos leading to the latter’s wicket during one such attempt.

The incident occurred in the 19th over of the Australian inning bowled by Imran Tahir. With the score below 100 after 18 overs, Warner attempted to take on Tahir. He had smashed the retiring South African spinner for a boundary in the opening delivery of the over. Then in the third delivery, he nudged the ball towards leg-square and quickly set off for the risky single. But Stoinis was caught short of crease by De Kock, who deflected a Kagiso Rabada throw into the stumps.
De Kock's Tribute to MS Dhoni
The speciality of the run-out was in how De Kock followed MS Dhoni's steps in effecting the run-out. Unlike traditional wicket-keepers, De Kock stood in front of the stumps while collecting Rabad's throw, which was first orchestrated by Dhoni in Cricket's history. The manner in which De Kock deflected the throw into the stumps was also similar to the such run-outs Dhoni has effected in his cricketing career.
Earlier, Faf du Plessis scored South Africa's first century in CWC 2019 and Rassie van der Dussen scored 95 as South posted 325/6 in 50 overs after opting to bat first. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon took two wickets each for Australia.
