Pat Cummins shattered the Indian Premier League (IPL) record books at the IPL 2020 Player Auctions in Kolkata on December 19, 2019 (Thursday). Cummins, 26, triggered a fierce bid among the teams at the IPL 2020 auctions with Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab outbidding each other for several rounds before Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) snatched the Australian pacer for a whopping INR 15.50 Cr in the opening moments of the IPL 2020 player auctions. Cummins, who won the 2019 Allan Border trophy for his outstanding international year, has been exceptional in his three years in the IPL but was ruled out with injury from the last edition of the lucrative T20 franchise league. The amount KKR splashed on the Australian Test vice-captain also makes Cummins the most expensive foreigner in the history of the IPL. Cummins, who has taken 9 wickets in 8 T20I matches in 2019 and has an economy of 6.61, is also the second most expensive players to have gone under the hammer in IPL’s history. Yuvraj Singh still holds the record of bagging the highest amount from the IPL auctions with Delhi Capitals – then known as Delhi Daredevils – spending INR 16 Crore on the World Cup-winning Indian all-rounder. Cummins has been in terrific form in the current calendar year and was recently appointed the Australian Test team’s vice-captain for his excellent performances. In 16 ODIs this year, Cummins has already taken 31 wickets at an economy of 4.73, which includes 1 five-wicket haul and another four-fer.
The 26-year-old fast bowler’s best performances have, however, come in Baggy Greens for the Australian Test team in which Cummins has bagged 54 wickets from just 21 innings. A former KKR player himself, he played for the Kolkata based franchise in 2014, Cummins returns home with bigger expectations next season.
