Nuwan Zoysa Charged For Breaching ICC Anti-Corruption Code Thrice; Sri Lanka Cricket Sends Him on 'Compulsory Leave' with Immediate Effect
Nuwan Zoysa, on Wednesday, was sent on ‘compulsory leave’ with immediate effect by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) after the former fast bowler was charged for breaching anti-corruption code thrice.
Weeks after Sanath Jayasuriya was charged by ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), another former Sri Lankan cricketer is in the dock for alleged attempt to fix or improperly influence an international match. Nuwan Zoysa, on Wednesday, was sent on ‘compulsory leave’ with immediate effect by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) after the former fast bowler was charged for breaching anti-corruption code thrice.
The former Sri Lankan bowler has been accused of being involved in fixing or influencing the result or aspects of an international match, and asking his colleagues to follow suit. Also, he has been accused of not disclosing any approach by alleged/potential bookies/fixers to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit.
Nuwan Zoysa hasn’t been associated with the national team directly; however, he is the current bowling coach of Sri Lanka A team. The fast bowler has been in the Sri Lankan bowling coach set-up for the last few years. Before that, Zoysa has worked with an Indian domestic team, i.e. Goa.
The media release by SLC stated, “As another forward step, the competent authority of the SLC Mr Kamal Pathmasiri, SLC CEO Mr Ashley De Silva and Deputy Solicitor General of the AG's Department Sumathi Dharmawardena will travel to the UK in the near future to meet the UK's Chief Prosecutor to discuss the modality of setting up such a mechanism in Sri Lanka.”
It further added, “In the meantime, Minister of Sports Honorable Faiszer Musthapa has assured SLC that he will work towards introducing tough anti-corruption laws in Sri Lanka. Honorable Minister is constantly engaged with the SLC on this matter and is of the view that setting up a prudent anti-corruption mechanism in Sri Lanka is vital for the future of the game.”
The left-handed Sri Lankan fast bowler had retired from international cricket in 2007. Zoysa had played in 30 Test matches, and 95 ODIs for Sri Lanka before hanging his boots.
