Controversy erupted after Dhoni's gloves were spotted with the Balidan badge, the regimental dagger of the Indian Para Special Forces during India's opening match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The ICC requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ask Dhoni to not use the Balidan badge again. However, many Indians did not take ICC's request lightly and launched a massive campaign in favour of Dhoni on Twitter.
Within hours, #DhoniKeepTheGlove started trending and top the trends in India on Twitter. Many fans also called for boycott of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 by India. However, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar appealed everyone to think and talk sensibly on the issue.
Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has come out in support of M.S. Dhoni in the gloves controversy, saying ICC's job is not to look at who is wearing what. This after the governing body turned down BCCI's request to allow the stumper to keep sporting the Army insignia at the World Cup.
