MS Dhoni Becomes 4th Indian Batsman to Score 10,000 ODI Runs, Only Second Wicketkeeper to Achieve the Feat
Earlier in the day, MS Dhoni collected another record on the tour when he became the first Indian wicketkeeper to complete 300 ODI catches.
During the second One-Day International (ODI) between England and India, MS Dhoni became only the fourth Indian batsmen to cross the 10,000-run mark in 50-overs cricket. The former Indian captain now joins the elite list of batsmen which features Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid. At the start of the second ODI at Lord’s, Dhoni was just 33 runs away from the landmark. In the 43rd over of the Indian chase, Dhoni completed 10,000 ODI runs with a single. Dhoni was eventually dismissed on an individual score of 37. The right-handed batsman also becomes the fifth fastest in terms of innings taken to reach the milestone. It took Dhoni 273 innings while Sachin Tendulkar (259), Sourav Ganguly (263), Ricky Ponting (266) and Jacques Kallis (272) achieved the same in lesser innings.
Interestingly, earlier in the day, Dhoni collected another record on the tour when he became the first Indian wicketkeeper to complete 300 ODI catches. Overall, India’s World Cup-winning captain is the fourth wicketkeeper overall to achieve the feat of 300 plus catches in ODIs. Meanwhile, India lost the second ODI while chasing 323 runs. The visitors were bundled out for 236 with captain Virat Kohli (45) and Suresh Raina (46) being the top contributors. Following England’s victory, the three-match ODI series is now levelled at one each with the third and final game, which now becomes a series decider, to be played at Headingley, Leeds on July 17.
