Ravichandran Ashwin finished as the highest wicket-taker as India chastened an under-transition South Africa team 3-0 at home to complete their first-ever Test series whitewash over the Proteas in Test history. Ashwin, who equalled spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan's record of becoming joint-fastest to complete 350 Test wickets, ended the three-match Test series at 15 wickets. Mohammed Shami was second on the list with 13 wickets that included a five-wicket haul. Umesh Yadav, who sat out of the second game, also jumped into the list of top-five wicket-takers in the three-match Test series against South Africa. India have dominated Test cricket in recent times and also defeated West Indies 2-0 in their last assignment with the red ball. The Virat Kohli-led side lost only one Test at home in the six years. So, a triumph for the Faf du Plessis led side was highly unlikely. South Africa is going through a rough patch in international cricket and will aim to go back to their winning ways. The retirement of Ab de Villiers and Hashim Amla affected the South African cricket drastically. However, few young players have shown great promise in their early days and will aim to take giant strides in international cricket.

The previous Test series between the two sides was held in South Africa in 2018. It consisted of three matches and the hosts came on top by 2-1. Despite the result of the series, India put up a great fight and all the three matches went down to the wire. The pitches were tailor-made for the pacers and the fans witnessed some hostile fast bowling. Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Shami topped the bowling charts with 15 wickets in the series. While debutant Jasprit Bumrah claimed 14 wickets in the three-match rubber.
