Shami bagged three South Africa wickets in a row. He dismissed Temba Bavuma (0), Faf du Plessis (13) and Quinton de Kock (0) back-to-back. Other than Shami, Ravindra Jadeja also bowled amazingly on Day 5, bagging 4 wickets till lunch. With Shami and Jadeja’s incredible bowling, Proteas suffered a batting collapse on the Day 5 of the 1st Test. At lunch, India needed only 2 wickets to win the match as South Africa chase a huge total of 395 runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who clinched 7 wickets in the first innings, took 1 wicket in the match till lunch. He was able to grab his 350th Test wicket and became the joint-fastest bowler to reach 350 wickets in Tests. Ashwin shares the record with Sri Lanka’s former spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, both of whom bagged the feat in 66 innings. Meanwhile, the 2nd Test between India and South Africa will begin from October 10 in Pune.
