Mohammad Shami became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 after leading India to an 11-run victory over Afghanistan at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Southampton on Friday (June 22). He joins an elite list of cricketers to have taken a hat-trick in World Cup history. Chetan Sharma, who was the first player to take three successive wickets at the World Cup in 1975 is the only other Indian in the list. Lasith Malinga is the only player to take two World Cup hat-tricks. IND beat AFG by 11 runs.
Shami, who was bowling the final over of the Afghanistan innings and had to defend 16 runs, removed Mohammad Nabi, Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in successive deliveries to achieve the feat. The 29-year-old playing his first game in the 2019 Cricket World Cup had to defend 16 runs in the final over after Jasprit Bumrah had bowled a splendid penultimate over. He was hit for a boundary in his first delivery but bounced back with a dot in his next delivery before removing the dangerous Nabi.

Nabi (52) chased a full-length delivery but was caught at long-on by Hardik Pandya to the relief of the Indian team and its billion fans. The next ball Aftab Alm was clean bowled with a straight ball at the stumps before Shami also removed Mujeeb Ur Rahman off a Yorker in his third, fourth and fifth delivery of the 50th over. India won the match by 11 runs with Afghanistan all-out for 213 runs on board.
Afghanistan were in full control for the most part of the match and looked set for their first victory of CWC 2019 before Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in a single over to bring India back into the contest. Rashid Khan (14) and Nabi threatened to take the game away for a brief period with some clean hits to the fence but Chahal had Rashid stumped in the 46th over before Shami’s heroics led India to an emphatic victory.
India won their fourth match of the tournament and jumped to third in the points table with nine points from five games. They along with New Zealand are the only two sides still unbeaten in the tournament. India has won four of their five matches, while the game against New Zealand was abandoned due to rain.
