On day four of the second match between India and Australia in Perth, India fought hard to get tailenders and restrict the hosts to the minimum score possible. It was Mohammad Shami who created a ruckus in the Aussie camp snaring six wickets in the second innings. With this, he also went on to be the second bowler to have taken 40 plus Test wickets in the calendar year. It was Ishant Sharma who claimed 43 wickets in one calendar year in 2011. Talking about today, the 28-year-old gave away 56 runs and thereby registered his career-best figures. Shami bowled for eight overs and also gave away a couple of extras. Bowling 24 overs with an economy of 2.33, Shami’s spells helped the Aussies get bundled out on the total of 243 runs. Shami also surpassed his own record of five wickets giving away 28 runs which happened earlier this year in Johannesburg against South Africa. Shami also became the fourth player Indian player to register career-best figures after Kapil Dev, Ajit Agarkar and Abid Ali. A cricket expert tweeted about the record.

This was Shami’s fourth five wicket haul in Tests. Also, three of Shami’s four five-wicket hauls in Test matches have come outside Asia, with the effort at Perth his second such return in Australia (also took 5/112 at Sydney in 2015). Talking about the fourth inning, India has already lost KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara in the second innings while chasing 287 runs.
