Joe root had a tough time on the crease during the 4th Test of Ashes 2019 at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester. On the third day of the Test, England skipper Root encountered a pace delivery by Mitchell Starc, which broke his abdominal guard. Root was batting at 36 when the 140 kmph delivery hit him straight on the sensitive area, breaking his abdominal guard in two pieces. After getting hit by the ball, the right-handed batsman sat on the crease trying to relax. He was given medical attention later. This was not the only time when Root was injured by the pace attack of Australia bowlers. Later, he was again hurt after a pace delivery by Pat Cummins hit him on the knees. The delivery hit him above the knee and the England skipper was in a lot of pain. Root had a tough time on the Day 3 of the Ashes 2019 4th Test, but he kept his wicket and scored 71 runs, eventually losing his wicket to Josh Hazlewood after surviving 168 deliveries. England were able to score 310-10 in response to Australia’s first innings total of 497-8. In the second innings, Australia declared at 186-6 keeping a target of 383 for hosts England. Joe Root lost his wicket for a duck in the 2nd innings.

At the lunch of the final day, England were reeling at 87-4 with Jason Roy (31), Ben Strokes (1), Joe Root (0) and Rory Burns (0) losing their wickets cheaply. England and Australia have won one match each in Ashes 2019 so far. While Australia won the first Test by 251 runs, England won the third game by 1 wicket. The second Test ended in a draw.
