The opening match assumes significance as it will see members of three World Cup-winning sides officiating. David Boon, who was a member of the Allan Border-led Australia side that won their first title in 1987, will be the match referee. Kumar Dharmasena, a member of Arjuna Ranatunga’s champion team of 1996, is one of the two on-field umpires for the England vs South Africa match. Paul Reiffel will be the third umpire. He was a member of the Steve Waugh-led Australian team that won World Cup in 1999. Bruce Oxenford will be the other on-field umpire and Joel Wilson the fourth official for the match.
