Jay Shah, in a major development, has been named as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The 35-year-old, as per a release by the ICC, was elected unopposed for the role and he will succeed Greg Barclay, who had earlier announced that he is not going to seek a third term in office. Jay Shah, who holds the post of the BCCI secretary, will assume his new role from December 1, 2024. The current BCCI secretary is thus the youngest ever, at just 35 years of age to be named chairman of the ICC. He also joins the list of Indians to have held the top role in the global cricketing body. The ICC, historically was administered by the Marylebone Cricket Club secretary before David Richards was named chief executive in 1993. List of ICC Chairmans So Far:

  • N Srinivasan (2014-2015)

  • Shashank Manohar (2015-2020)

  • Greg Barclay (2020-Present, tenure set to end in November)

It has to be noted that Shashank Manohar succeeded N Srinivasan as the chairman of the ICC in 2016 after constitutional reforms in 2016, he assumed the role of the first independent elected ICC chairman. The ICC also did away with the role of president in the year 2016, with Pakistan great Zaheer Abbas the last to hold that position.

Shah has been holding the role of the BCCI secretary since 2019 and would have to vacate that position once he moves on to the ICC in December this year.
