India opening batsman KL Rahul, who hurt himself while fielding as he landed and fell hard on his back while attempting a catch during the India vs England match may not be able to open the innings. Reports say that the injury to Rahul is external and that he is under observation. However, in case Rahul is not able to open the innings, Rishabh Pant will open the batting for India against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Rishabh Pant is making his world cup debut for India during in the IND vs ENG match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

The injury to KL Rahul took place when the opener tried to take a catch on the boundary line in the 16th over of the match. Jonny Bairstow hit an aerial shot that went for six, but in attempting to stop the ball, Rahul jumped and fell hard on the field. KL Rahul had to take the role of opening the innings after regular India opener Shikhar Dhawan injured his thump during the India vs Australia match earlier in the tournament. England vs India Cricket Full Scorecard 38th ODI Match.

The injury ruled out Shikhar Dhawan from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and Rishabh Pant, who was not part of the India cricket team squad originally, was called to England to join the team as his replacement.
