Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 243 in their second innings. Thanks to the 43-run lead in the first innings, India were given a target of 287 runs. Resuming on an overnight score of 132, Usman Khawaja and Tim Paine shared a patient partnership to take Australia’s lead past the 200-run mark.
It was Mohammed Shami who broke the partnership and accounted for both Khawaja and Paine’s wickets. Khawaja, who was unbeaten on 41 on day three, was eventually out for 72 runs. Shami returned with his career-best figures of 6/56.
