Neesham, who is playing his first ODI in 17 months, finished unbeaten on 47 off just 13 balls as Kiwis posted mammoth 371 for seven in their allotted 50 overs. Neesham missed out on creating a world record of most runs in an over when on last ball he managed tp pick only a single. A boundary or even three runs would have meant a new record in ODIs.
However, Neesham did manage to surpass his captain Kane Williamson’s New Zealand record of most runs in an over. Williamson during the 2011 Cricket World Cup had scored 31 runs in an over against Canada.
34 off Perera’s over now finds the joint third place on the list of most runs in an over in ODIs with AB de Villiers feat against Windies’ Jason Holder. Herschelle Gibbs dominates the list with six sixes off Netherlands’ Daan van Bunge during the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Interestingly, Perera, who was at the receiving end today, holds the record of second most runs in an over in ODIs with 35 against South Africa’s Robin Peterson. Thanks to Neesham’s fireworks, Martin Guptill’s 138 and a half-century each by Williamson and Ross Taylor, Black Caps raced past the 350-run mark. Neesham’s knock was decorated with six sixes, the sixth of which came in the last over.
