Is Rohit Sharma a Better Captaincy Choice Than Virat Kohli in T20Is?

Perhaps, if Rohit guides India to win in the upcoming tri-nation T20I series, the ‘idea’ of having him as a full-time captain in T20Is will start taking a serious shape.

Indian captain Virat Kohli has been rested for the upcoming Nidahas Trophy 2018 against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. And in his absence, Rohit Sharma will take charge of the side. This is not the first time, Rohit has been entrusted to lead the Indian team. The opener, recently, was handed the responsibility in a crucial third and final T20I against South Africa. And he passed with flying colours in a closely contested game, leading the side to a seven-wicket win. Interestingly, Rohit has hundred percent record when it comes to leading the Indian cricket team in T20Is, although he has led only in four matches till date.

But right now, in Indian cricket captaincy is not an issue. Kohli is doing a very good job across formats. However, handing Rohit the captaincy in the shorter format of the game isn’t a bad thought as well. If Rohit takes charge of the T20I side, it will help Kohli focus on One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Tests, especially with 50-over World Cup to be held next year. And, Rohit does have a better-looking resumé than Kohli when it comes to T20 cricket.

Rohit happens to be the most successful captain in Indian Premier League (IPL). The Mumbai Indians’ skipper has three IPL titles against his name. Kohli, on the other hand, doesn’t even have one. Not only this, under Rohit’s captaincy Mumbai Indians also lifted Champions League T20 title. So, that effectively makes it four trophies.

India will lock horns with hosts Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the tri-series, starting March 06, Tuesday. Interestingly, the three teams will be without the services of their regular captains. Dinesh Chandimal will lead Sri Lanka in absence of injured Angelo Mathews while Mahmudullah will captain Bangladesh after Shakib al Hasan was ruled out due to a finger injury.
