Indian Premier League has given a platform for international players to show their prowess and strive to be the best of the best. Also, it has provided a stage for young budding cricketers to rub shoulders with the prominent players of world cricket. Since the arrival of the lucrative T20 tournament, the lives of many cricketers have changed for the better.
While one cannot deny the benefits of the IPL, there have been some adverse effects of the cash-rich league as well. Leading UK knee surgeon Andy Williams believes that the T20 extravaganza has led to more preventable injuries to bowlers than ever and he has also warned England Cricket to address the issue.
The services of Williams have been acquired by many former cricketers including Andrew Flintoff and Sachin Tendulkar. Also, he was used by 18 of the 20 Premier League clubs in the last season. Recently, the top UK surgeon performed surgery on England all-rounder Chris Woakes.
Injuries have plagued England's fast bowlers of late. Jofra Archer has been sidelined from the major part of the last year or so due to a recurring stress fracture to his right elbow. Olly Stone has been struck by hamstring and knee issues quite often of late. Even England Test captain Ben Stokes has been seen managing his workload due to a recurring knee injury.
Not only England but Indian Cricket Team has also been affected by recurring injuries of late. India's premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah sustained a recurring back injury and was sidelined from international cricket for nearly a year. Besides Bumrah, Deepak Chahar and Prasidh Krishna has been suffered from recurring injuries quite often
Williams is of the opinion that IPL is one of the reasons why cricketers now suffer from recurring overload injuries. In the interview with Mail Sport, he stated that the cash-rich league has cut down on resting time for the players and given the body is not able to heal in time, we are witnessing an overload of injuries. He adds that the plethora of T20 leagues is an issue that the sport must handle properly for the longevity of the cricketers.
