All You Need to Know About IPL 2025 Mega Auction Retention Rules

Key Points from the IPL 2025 Auction Retention Rules

  • All teams can retain up to six players (via RTM card/ Retention)
  • A maximum of five capped players can be retained which includes both Indian and overseas
  • The limit for retaining uncapped players is two
  • The players who have not featured for the Indian team in the past five years or don't have a BCCI central contract will be considered as uncapped
  • Each franchise will have an auction purse of INR 120 crore
  • Players will suffer ban of at least two years if they describe themselves unavailable for the tournament after being picked in the auction

What is the Salary Slab of Retained Players Ahead of IPL 2025 Auction?

One of the major changes that the Indian Premier League 2025 auction retention rules have witnessed is the increase in the number of retained players. Teams can retain a maximum of capped Indian or overseas players along with a maximum of two uncapped players, which means a total of six players can be retained by each team ahead of the auction. Teams are limited to keeping two uncapped players on their squad, and their overall retained player count cannot be more than six. The salary slab for an uncapped player is INR 4 crores. The entire sum of INR 120 crore would be reduced by the salaries of the players who were retained. As a result, a franchise's auction purse will decrease in proportion to how many players it keeps. IPL 2025 Retention: List of Possible Retentions For MI, CSK, RCB, KKR and Other Franchises Ahead of Mega Auction.

Salary Slab of Retained Players

Player Number Value
Player 1 INR 18 crore
Player 2 INR 14 crore
Player 3 INR 11 crore
Player 4 INR 18 crore
Player 5 INR 14 crore

To understand the IPL 2025 Retention rules well here are some scenarios:

If a team Retains All Six Players

If a team retain all six players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction the price of those players will be deducted from the INR 120 crore purse of the franchise. This means INR 79 crore will be deducted from the team's total purse and they will be left with a remaining purse of INR 41 crore. They willn't be left with any RTM cards.

If a team Doesn't Retain any Players

If team doesn't retain any players they will be left with a full purse of INR 120 crore and they will also have a total of six RTM cards.

What are the Changes in the RTM Card?

The Right to Match Card will mark a return to the IPL mega auction and will be used for the first time after 2022. The RTM card can prove to be a game changer for the teams and can also increase their retained players up to six. However, the fans would like to know what is the RTM card. The RTM card allows the franchises to retain the players by matching the maximum bid made for them in the auction. For example, Mitchell Starc being sold for a price of INR 10 crores in the auction, he can then be retained by Kolkata Knight Riders if they wish to raise the RTM card for him and match the bid with INR 10 crores.

Are there any Changes in the RTM Card Rules?

Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction one change has been made in the Right to Match Card rules by the BCCI and the IPL governing council. A team that utilizes the RTM card now has the opportunity to increase the bid and will have to pay that sum in order to keep the player.

When Will the IPL 2025 Mega Auction Take Place?

The Indian Premier League 2025 auction is expected to take place in the month of November or December this year, however, no official date has been released so far.
