The 11th season of Indian Premier League commenced on April 8, 2018. So far the IPL 2018, has given us nail-biting contests and overall has kept the fans hooked with the run-scoring fest. Fans have always loved big totals on the board. Especially in a format like T20, even the batsmen aim to hit the bowler out of the park. Over the years, we have had many hitters in the Indian Premier League. These run-getters have not only entertained us, but even their innings have had a special place in the archives of our memories. Even the IPL rewards them. The highest run-getters of the tournament are given an Orange Cap.
The owners of the cap keep changing during the course of the tournament but the highest scorer of the tournament is the final keep the honour for the rest of the year. Let's have a look at the Orange Cap holders of each year.
Shaun Marsh- Kings XI Punjab (2008)
The debut season of IPL witnessed massive scores on the board. Australian cricketer Shaun Marsh, who played for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL 2008 made a massive total of 616 runs in 11 outings and earned a Purple Cap for himself.
Mathew Hayden-Chennai Super Kings (2009)
The second season of the IPL was held in South Africa and another Australian player who got himself a purple cap was Mathew Hayden. He made 572 runs in 12 matches and played for Chennai Super Kings.
Sachin Tendulkar – Mumbai Indians (2010)
Is there anything that the Master Blaster cannot do? Well not really! Sachin Tendulkar bagged a Purple Cap in 2010 when he scored 618 runs in 15 matches. He played for the Mumbai Indians and enthralled the fans with his massive fours and sixes.
Chris Gayle – Royal Challengers Bangalore (2011 & 2012)
We are sure that in 2011 & 2012, the first plan of the opponents was to get rid of Chris Gayle as most of the times, he would hit the ball out of the park. In the fourth & fifth season of the IPL, Chris Gayle went on to don the Orange Cap hitting 608 runs in 12 outings. In the fifth season, he scored 733 runs in 15 outings.
Michael Hussey- Chennai Super Kings (2013)
Michael Hussey who played for the Yellow Army Chennai Super Kings, scored 733 runs in 15 matches. The Australian was given an Orange Cap for his fiery innings throughout the season.
Robin Uthappa – Kolkata Knight Riders (2014)
With 660 runs in 16 matches, Robin Uthappa was seen hitting the ball outside the park most of the times. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Robin Uthappa had a lion’s share in KKR being crowned as the winner in 2014.
David Warner – Sunrisers Hyderabad (2015 & 2017)
Australian hitter David Warner was the next one to get the prestigious Purple Cap in 2015 & 2017. Scoring 562 runs in 14 matches, Warner went on to become the highest run-getter in 2015 of the IPL season. In 2017, he made a swashbuckling total of 641 in 14 matches.
Virat Kohli – Royal Challengers Bangalore- (2016)
Run machine and Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli is the highest run scorer of the IPL till date. The previous records broke as the skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore made 973 runs in 16 matches in 2016.
