IPL Franchises Request BCCI To Increase Player Retentions for Next Three Years: Report
As per a report by Cricbuzz, the Indian Premier League franchises have requested the BCCI to increase the number of player retentions in the upcoming editions of the tournament. At present a total of four players can be retained by a team in the cash rich league.
The Indian Premier League is probably one of the biggest and richest cricket leagues of the modern-day era. The league has given a lot of players to international cricket which includes the likes of Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah. Overseas cricketers such as Matheesha Pathirana have been nurtured in the cash-rich league. Many records were broken when Australian cricketers such as Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins received amounts of over INR 20 crores. As the tournament will approach its 18th edition next year a mega auction is set to take place in November or December. As per a report by Cricbuzz, Indian Premier League franchises have requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to increase the number of players retentions in the cash-rich league to more than four. BCCI increased the player retention limit to a number of four by adding the condition that not more than three Indians or more than two overseas players cannot be retained at one time. This development has emerged as the BCCI has initiated the process of finalising the retention policy for the upcoming editions of the tournament. The final decision regarding the same can be taken after BCCI holds a meeting with the owners of each franchise later. The meeting is expected to take place when are available to attend the meeting. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, set to take place later this year, BCCI Acting CEO and IPL in-charge Hemang Amin had a meeting with the owners of the franchises regarding the issue. The main motive of the meeting was to discuss the policy and the salary cap of the players. There were opinions that the Right to Match (RTM) card could also be included in the auction which was last used in 2020.
Most of the franchises have requested to increase the retentions from five to seven whereas some of them want up to eight retentions. Some of the franchises opine that there should be no retentions and auctions shall be held with RTM cards.
