India’s Number One Test Ranking Not in Danger, Even If Virat Kohli and Co Suffer Whitewash Against England
As per ICC’s team ranking predictor tool, India’s rating will drop to 112 in case of a 0-5 defeat against England.
India comes into the five-match Test series against England as number one ranked side. The Virat Kohli-led India have a rating of 125 and sit comfortably on top of the ICC Test rankings. Hosts England, on the other hand, are placed fifth with a rating of 97. If India suffers a 0-5 whitewash against England, it won’t affect the team’s ranking. The second-placed team on the rankings, South Africa, are currently locked in a two-match series against Sri Lanka and have a rating of 112, which is way below than India. If South Africa, who lost the first Test, manage to draw or win the second Test their rating won’t go beyond 110. On the other hand, a 5-0 win will apparently help England move up in the rankings. So irrespective of the result, India’s numero uno position in Tests is not in danger. The five-match series against England begins on August 01 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The last time India toured England in 2014, the visitors were handed a 3-1 defeat.
Meanwhile, hosts England will be looking to walk away with the honours in the longer format after a 2-1 win in the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series. India, however, won the T20 international series 2-1 at the start of the tour.
