The Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA), Rajkot had managed to sell only 10% of the tickets for the opening match between India and West Indies which started from today. The SCA has in fact doled out complimentary passes and distributed freebies to fill up the stadium which has a seating capacity of about 25,000. This is only the second time that the Saurashtra Cricket Association is hosting a test match. BCCI’s veteran administrator Niranjan Shah said that the state at Rajkot is quite sad as compared to other states where there has been a dispute between the board and the BCCI for free passes. He also went on to reveal that not more than 2000 tickets sold ahead of the match and the administrators cannot figure out the reason for people not showing interest in attending the match.
“Rajkot is not a big city like Delhi and Mumbai and we were expecting a decent turnout in a smaller city like Rajkot. Right now, it doesn't seem to be the case as just over 2000 tickets have been sold. But we don't know why people are not showing interest. Hopefully, the sales pick up over the weekend," explained Shah, who currently holds no specific post at the Saurashtra Cricket Association.
The state cricket association has even distributed tickets to players, men and women, in all districts of the region to increase the number of attendees for the match. “According to BCCI diktat, 10 percent of match tickets are reserved for school kids. So they will be attending too. Having said that, it is unfortunate that people are not showing interest,” said Niranjan Shah. The cheapest price of the ticket is Rs 100.
