When Kohli stepped out for the toss on a sunny Thursday morning at the Maharashtra Cricket Stadium in Pune, he was leading India for the 50th time in Test matches, a record only eclipsed by MS Dhoni in Indian cricket. Du Plessis has now lost the toss in his last six consecutive Test matches away from home. India opted to bat first after Du Plessis called it wrong but Kagiso Rabada gave them a breathing space by dismissing Rohit Sharma. Agarwal and Pujara and later Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, however, held fort to compound a successive Day 1 for India with the bat.
