After a string of low scores, star India opener, Rohit Sharma came good with the bat and held his end to score a fantastic hundred. Sharma scored 115 runs off 126 balls, and just when his team desperately wanted him to fire. However, the Centurion drew some flak on social media for running-out both, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. Riding high on his century, India put up a competitive score of 274 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of 7 wickets.
Known to assist spinners in the past, the Indian spin-combo took full advantage of the playing conditions at St. George’s Park. The Proteas looked in control in their innings initially, before both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav wreaked havoc in their batting order.
None of the star batsmen – JP Duminy, AB de Villiers, Heinrich Klaasen or David Miller – were able to support Hashim Amla who seemed to be the lone fighter in South African camp in the night. Hardik Pandya came good on the field as he took two crucial wickets and effected a run-out of Hashim Amla, which triggered a lower-order collapse. The home team was all out on a paltry score of 201 runs in 43 overs.
