Centurion, January 15: South Africa batsmen AB de Villiers and Dean Elgar steadied the host’s ship after Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah picked two early wickets at the score of three. At the end of rain-interrupted day’s play of the second Test match at the SuperSport Park, the duo managed to take the team’s second innings total to 90/2. However, the day belonged to Indian captain, Virat Kohli who smashed a defiant knock of 153. Catch the video highlights of the Day 3 of the second Test in Centurion here.
Skipper Virat Kohli resumed his batting at 85 and went on to hit his 21st Test century. The 29-year-old batted like a dream who was well supported by R Ashwin who took the crease after the fall of Hardik Pandya’s wicket. The Newlands hero for India departed in bizarre run out after he failed to drag his bat across the line. However, Hardik’s dismissal did not affect Kohli who stitched a fine seventh-wicket partnership to frustrate Proteas bowlers and near their first innings total of 335 runs.
Kohli-Ashwin’s 71-run stand was broken after last game’s Man of the Match, Vernon Philander got the latter caught by captain Faf du Plessis. Mohammed Shami did not affect the scoreboard much departing after making one run. However, Kohli found support from Ishant Sharma who hung around defending 34 deliveries as the Indian captain scored runs at the other end. Kohli went on to score 153 runs, which helped in equalling Australian batting legend Don Bradman's record of scoring eight 150 plus score in Tests as captain. India were finally bowled out for 307 in their first innings with Kohli falling to Morne Morkel. Virat Kohli Smashes 21st Hundred, Second Against Proteas.
After Kohli’s heroics with the bat, young Bumrah gave India an early breakthrough. His slightly slinging action proved to be way too much for opener first innings top-scorer, Aiden Markram and Test veteran, Hasim Amla. Both batsmen were caught leg before wicket leaving South Africa stuttering at the score of 3/2. Nevertheless, South Africa’s most dependable batsman, AB de Villiers once again came in for team’s rescue.
De Villiers hit a handsome half-century in the company of opening batsman Dean Elgar. Both batsmen played carefully in the rain-interrupted final session of the day. At the stumps, De Villiers was at 50 off 78 deliveries while Elgar was 36 facing the same number of balls. South Africa has a lead of 118 runs with eight wickets in hand. It will be interesting to see who holds their nerves best to decide the outcome of the Centurion Test.
