ENG 302/7 in 90 Overs (Stumps) | India vs England 4th Test 2024 Day 1 Highlights: Joe Root's Century Steadies England's Ship After Early Blow From Akash Deep

Stumps! That's the end of Day 1's play and it has been an action packed first day of a Test match. India started with the upper hand with Akash Deep running through the England top order. England lost half their side before lunch and then Joe Root and Ben Foakes combined to start their fightback. After Foakes was dismissed in the post-Tea session, it felt like England's resistance came to and end but Tom Hartley and Ollie Robinson played solid cameos to support Root and keep England in the game. England have now clawed their way back although India are a little ahead in the game. 

Hundred! What a magnificent innings by Joe Root and he plays a perfect cover drive to get to his century. One of the very best in the game has again shut down all the criticism. Joe Root has played very well and an important innings for England.

Things are getting out of the hands of India as England are close to reaching 300 and are seven wickets down. Joe Root is still on the crease looking to complete his 31st Test century. Root has been set for quite some time now and has shown a brilliant piece of batting. He has mostly middled the ball throughout his innings.

Out! A cracking delivery by Mohammed Siraj to perfectly dismiss Tom Hartley. Siraj came around the wicket for the left-hander and went on to bowl a perfect length ball to bowl him out. Siraj has his second wicket now.

Out! Ben Foakes holes out at mid-wicket and that is the breakthrough India was looking for. A 113 run partnership finally comes to an end as Foakes flicks one straight to the hands of Jadeja. Mohammed Siraj has not been involved in much action throughout the day but he gets the big fish Foakes. England will still want to add a few more. 

That's the end of the second session of the day and England has displayed some surprising batting. The surprise doesn't come from them batting slow under pressure which is a normalcy, rather it comes from the way England have carried themselves in recent past. But for now both Joe Root and Ben Foakes have made themselves forget that and dropped anchor, realising how costly being reckless can be here. They have played out an entire session and they will look to continue this post Tea. 

Fifty! Given the way the tour has went for Joe Root, this half-century will come as a breath of fresh air for him. Root played in the method which has given him success over the years today and it has again yielded results for him. He would thank the calming presence of Ben Foakes at the other end too. Long way to go for the England batting mainstay for them to put up a competitive score on board. 

England have found themselves in trouble in the first session of the day, losing five wickets on 112 runs. They have a long way infront of them in the Test match and to show even a considerable fight, they need runs on board. Joe Root and Ben Foakes are currently on the crease looking to consolidate the innings and accumulate some runs on the board. 

Out! Ben Stokes trapped in front of the wicket by Ravindra Jadeja and the England captain walks instantly. Huge wicket for India and now England are in deep trouble. They don't have enough on the board and they have lost half their side before lunch on Day 1. 

Out! Just when England crossed the 100 mark with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root at the crease, Bairstow falls Ravichandran Ashwin. England have an uphill task at hand after the opening spell of Akash Deep cleaned up their top order. Bairstow had started well but he has pressure to perform and the skillful bowling of the Indians got him in the end. England continue to look for consolidation, 

Out! This time it is not a no ball. Finally Akash Deep gets his man Zak Crawley. What a dream debut for the Bengal quick as he dismantles the danger man Crawley's stumps to scalp the third wicket of the day and just in his sixth over of the spell. The morning has belonged to Akash Deep and he has England under trouble early. 

Out! Akash Deep turns his luck around in no time as he takes two wickets in one over and England are in early trouble. First he gets the wicket of Ben Duckett after troubling him for a long time. Then he strikes Ollie Pope in the pads and convinces Rohit Sharma for a solid review to get him LBW. India have made inroads and England have to consolidate from here. 

A big relief for Zak Crawley. Akash Deep sent his stumps cartwheeling in the fourth over but ended up overstepping so Crawley lives to see another day. The Debutant has been spot on with his lengths and pace and nipped back one past Crawley's bat to get him bowled. But Umpire called it a no ball and Akash Deep has to start again. England looking to get a steady start here.
