ENG 67/1 in 14 Overs (Target 399 Runs) | India vs England Highlights of 2nd Test 2024 Day 3: Shubman Gill Shines As Enthralling Day’s Play Comes to an End
India were in a position of control and dominance as action resumed on Day 3 of this contest in Visakhapatnam. Can Rohit Sharma and his men take the game away from here or will England find a way to bounce back? Stay tuned to get highlights of the day's play.
An enthralling day's play comes to an end with England needing 332 runs to win the 2nd Test match. The day beganwith James Anderson knocking over both Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah and later it was the Shubman Gill show, who battled his way to a third Test century. India rode on his innings to score 255, thereby setting a 399-run target for England to chase down a go 2-0 up in the series. All three results are still possible, although a draw can be taken out of the equation with the kind of attacking cricket that England play. With still 332 runs to get and India needing nine more wickets, it is still anybody's game. India though will be slightly ahead as batting fourth on this track is expected to be a tough ask.
OUT! Ravichandran Ashwin has struck and he has dismissed Ben Duckett, who was looking so good. Duckett defends the ball which catches the edge of the bat, hits the pad and lobs up. KS Bharat then ended up taking a good catch to give India a breakthrough! Ben Duckett c KS Bharat b Ravichandran Ashwin 28(27)
Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett have once again given England a good start and the latter has done the bulk of the scoring. It would be interesting to see India's tactic as they look to separate the pair before the close of play today.

OUT! Rehan Ahmed ends Ravichandran Ashwin's innings and India have been bowled out for 255 runs. Ashwin fails to take the target beyond 400 with England needing 399 to win, having few overs and two more days to play. India would ideally want to pick up a couple of England wickets to dent the chase. Ravichandran Ashwin c Ben Foakes b Rehan Ahmed 29(61)
OUT! Tom Hartley has one more wicket here and he has ended Jasprit Bumrah's vigil. Bumrah tried to drive but got an outside and Jonny Bairstow ended up taking a fine catch at second slip. India close to 400 now and all eyes would be on how Ashwin plays. Jasprit Bumrah c Jonny Bairstow b Tom Hartley 0(26)
OUT! One more wicket here after tea as Kuldeep Yadav falls to Tom Hartley. The left-hander went for a slog sweep and Ben Duckett ends up taking a simple catch. India would need someone to stay with Ravi Ashwin in the middle for the total to go closer to 400. Kuldeep Yadav c Ben Duckett b Tom Hartley 0(5)
OUT! Another soft dismissal for KS Bharat, who failed to pull off the shot with the ball going straight to Ben Stokes. A wicket falls in the first over after tea and England would be more than happy to keep India's lead to within 400 here. KS Bharat c Ben Stokes b Rehan Ahmed 6(28)

That would be tea on Day 3 and it has been a stellar session once again. Shubman Gill's century highlighted India's performance in the second session and the youngster would be mighty relieved, having gotten a big score under his belt after a series of failures at the number three spot. India now are ahead with a massive lead of 370 runs and the team management would hope that the KS Bharat and Ravi Ashwin take it beyond 400. Axar Patel also did well for his 45 runs. England on the other hand, would not be too disappointed as they did well despite the absence of Joe Root, who earlier took a blow to his finger.
OUT! And England have struck again with Tom Hartley removing Axar Patel! The left-arm spinner round the wicket and the ball went through quickly as well as stayed low. Axar, who played across the line, was hit in front of his pads and a DRS from Ben Stokes confirmed the same. For the third time in this innings, England have picked up two wickets in a quick span of time. Axar Patel lbw b Tom Hartley 45(84)
OUT! Shubman Gill has been dismissed and England would be relieved to see the back of the centurion. Out of nowhere, Gill comes up with a reverse sweep and the ball hits his glove and lobs up in the air. Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes then pouches a simple catch and what a lucky break for England this is! Onto Axar Patel and KS Bharat now if India are to take the total beyond England's reach. Shubman Gill c Foakes b Shoaib Bashir 104(147)
CENTURY for Shubman Gill! What a knock this has been from the youngster, who has given a timely reminder of his abilities as one of the top cricketers going around today. He weathered the initial storm and has played some fine cricket which has had a mix of caution and aggression to score his 3rd Test century.
India's lead moves past 300 now and the hosts would feel comfortable with this sort of a score, although they would like to add more to it. Shubman Gill has taken a liking to Rehan Ahmed and hit him for a six and two fours in the 41st over. India would need him to carry on and make it big, with an opportunity of a hundred lurking.
The second session on Day 3 has started with Axar Patel and Shubman Gill looking to re-establish a partnership for India in this game. India have a substantial lead and any total beyond the 350-run mark would be a tough one for England to chase down.
And that is lunch on Day 3. What a session it has been here for both teams. It started off brilliantly for England with James Anderson taking two wickets, dismissing both openers. India however bounced back with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer stitching an 81-run partnership, one that brought the hosts back into the contest. But England once again handed India a double strike, dismissing Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar in quick succession. Rohit Sharma and his men lead by 273 runs now with Shubman Gill well set on 60.
OUT! Another wicket for England it is the debutant Rajat Patidar, who has to depart now. Ben Foakes, much like he did in the first innings, pulls off a fine catch of an inside edge and it has set India back big time. India have lost two wickets once again in quick time. Rajat Patidar c Ben Foakes b Rehan Ahmed 9(19)
OUT! Just when it seemed that India were getting ahead in the match, a wicket has fallen and it is that of Shreyas Iyer, who perishes in an attempt to clear the field. And what a catch that was from Ben Stokes. Iyer came down the track and took the attack to Tom Hartley but failed to find the distance with Stokes taking a fascinating catch. India have lost another wicket after a good partnership. Shreyas Iyer c Stokes b Tom Hartley 29(52)
India are well and truly on top against England in Visakhapatnam after Yashasvi Jaiswal starred with a magical double hundred and Jasprit Bumrah complemented it with a brilliant six-wicket haul. Rohit Sharma and his men now are in the driver's seat and it remains to be seen how things end up turning out on Day 3 of this enthralling Test match. India, despite being in an advantageous position, will not take things lightly. They were in a similar situation back in Hyderabad before Ollie Pope's magical knock and Tom Hartley's heroics in the fourth innings turned the game around on its head. India will be wary of that and look forward to dictating proceedings from here on in a bid to level the series. For England, a lot would rest on the spinners who would look to bring an end to the Indian innings as early as possible in this Test match.IND vs ENG 2nd Test 2024 Day 2 Stumps: India in Driver's Seat As Yashasvi Jaiswal Scores Double Ton, Jasprit Bumrah Claims Six Wickets.
Jaiswal was the lone performer for India in the first innings, shining with a sensational double century, his first in Test cricket with many more expected to come. Had it not been for Jaiswal who showed excellent composure and technique to get to the mark, India could have fallen well short of what would have been a challenging total on this flat track. The next best score by the Indian batting order was 34 by Shubman Gill, which just goes to show how spectacular the innings was, by young Jaiswal. India would have wanted a bit more than 396 but Bumrah had other plans. On a placid track that did not have much for the fast bowlers, he churned out what would go down as a memorable performance. With his ability to reverse swing the ball and also nail those yorkers, the premier paceman ran through England's middle-order and cleaned up the tail as well. Jasprit Bumrah Becomes Fastest Indian Pacer to Complete 150 Wickets in Test Cricket, Achieves Feat During India vs England 2nd Test 2024.
India, with a 171-run lead, will look to put up a score that could be beyond England's control. But the task would be far from easy, considering how good England have been when it comes to run chases, in this format of the game.
