It is stumps on Day 1 and what a day it has been! India bowled England out for 246 and later, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma and later Shubman Gill took the team to 119/1, trailing by 127 runs. Jaiswal in particular, was magnificent as he took the attack to England's bowlers. Tom Hartley, the debutant was taken apart for 63 runs in nine overs and that sums up their bowling effort. Jack Leach was the only wicket-taker when he dismissed Rohit Sharma. Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets apiece and Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah got two each. It was always going to be tough for England against India's spinners and it was what was on show today. Barring Ben Stokes, no other English batter could convert their start. India are firmly in the driver's seat and would hope to carry on in the same manner on Day 2 as well.Ā

Much has already been talked about this series with many pitting it as a test for 'Bazball', a term made which has popularly been used to describe England cricket's aggressive approach in Test cricket under head coach Brendon McCullum. India would have a big hole to fill in the middle-order with Virat Kohli not being around for the first two Tests. Rajat Patidar has reportedly been picked in the Indian team and it is a bit unlikely that he will make it to the playing XI straight away. Shreyas Iyer might bat at number four in Kohli's place and KS Bharat is likely to slot in as the wicketkeeper-batter. This is after head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that KL would not play as a specialist wicketkeeper-batter.

Squads:
