India Registers 6th Test Win on Australian Soil, Beat Hosts by 31 Runs in the Series Opener

India defeated Australia by 31 runs in Adelaide to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. Chasing a target of 323 runs, Australia were bowled out for 291 after lower-order batsmen showed some resistance. Australia began the day on 104 for four with Shaun Marsh and Travis Head at the crease. And were eventually bowled out, thus losing the first Test. This is India’s sixth Test win on Australian soil. The day five began on a positive note for India with Ishant removing Head early to make things difficult for Australia. Marsh and captain Tim Paine then added 41 runs for the sixth wicket to take Australia forward. India then bounced back by removing Marsh and Paine in space of 31 runs. It was Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc’s partnership that took Australia close to the target. The duo added 41 runs for the eighth wicket. The duo were then separated as Mohammed Shami dismissed Starc. Few overs later, Jasprit Bumrah had Cummins caught in the slip.

It was then the last wicket partnership between Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood that frustrated India. The duo added 32 runs for the ninth wicket and made Indian bowlers toil hard.
